بَابُ النَّهْي عَنْ ابْتَدَاءِ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ بِالسَّلامِ
Chapter on the Prohibition of Initiating Salam with the People of the Book
Hadith 8274
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا لَقِيتُمُوهُمْ وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ إِذَا لَقِيتُمُ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فِي طَرِيقٍ فَلَا تَبْدَءُوهُمْ وَاضْطَرُّوهُمْ إِلَى أَضْيَقِهَا قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَقُلْتُ لِسُهَيْلٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ الْيَهُودُ وَالنَّصَارَى فَقَالَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you meet polytheists on the road, do not initiate the greeting of peace with them, and force them to the narrowest part of the road. Zuhair says: I asked Suhail, "Does this refer to the Jews and Christians?" He replied, "It refers to the polytheists."
Hadith 8275
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا تَبْدَءُوا الْيَهُودَ وَالنَّصَارَى بِالسَّلَامِ وَإِذَا لَقِيتُمُوهُمْ فِي طَرِيقٍ فَاضْطَرُّوهُمْ إِلَى أَضْيَقِهَا
(Second chain) The Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Do not initiate greeting the Jews and Christians with salam, and when you meet them on the road, force them to the narrowest part of the path.
Hadith 8276
عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْجُهَنِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنِّي رَاكِبٌ غَدًا إِلَى يَهُودٍ فَلَا تَبْدَءُوهُمْ بِالسَّلَامِ فَإِذَا سَلَّمُوا عَلَيْكُمْ فَقُولُوا وَعَلَيْكُمْ
Sayyiduna Abu Abdur Rahman Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Tomorrow I will go to the Jews riding (my mount), you must not initiate greeting them with salam, and when they greet you with salam, you should only say: "Wa 'alaykum."
