Chapter on What Has Been Reported Regarding the Words of Salam and Its Reply
Hadith 8259
عَنْ أَبِي تَمِيمَةَ الْهُجَيْمِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ لَقِيتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي بَعْضِ طُرُقِ الْمَدِينَةِ وَعَلَيْهِ إِزَارٌ مِنْ قُطْنٍ مُنْتَثِرُ الْحَاشِيَةِ فَقُلْتُ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامَ تَحِيَّةُ الْمَوْتَى إِنَّ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامَ تَحِيَّةُ الْمَوْتَى إِنَّ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامَ تَحِيَّةُ الْمَوْتَى سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا هَكَذَا
Sayyiduna Abu Tamimah Hijimi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from a man of his tribe, who says: I met the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) on a road in Madinah. He was wearing a cotton waistcloth, the edge of which was spread out. I said: ‘Alaika as-salaam, O Messenger of Allah!’ (Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah!) But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, ‘Alaika as-salaam’ is the greeting for the dead. Indeed, ‘Alaika as-salaam’ is the greeting for the dead. Indeed, ‘Alaika as-salaam’ is the greeting for the dead. Say ‘Salaamun ‘alaikum’, say ‘Salaamun ‘alaikum’. He repeated these words two or three times.
Hadith 8260
عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا جَاءَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فَقَالَ عَشْرٌ ثُمَّ جَاءَ آخَرُ فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فَقَالَ عِشْرُونَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ آخَرُ فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فَقَالَ ثَلَاثُونَ
Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "As-Salamu Alaikum." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied to him and said: He has received ten good deeds. Then another came and said: "As-Salamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied to him, he also sat down, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He has received twenty good deeds. Then another came and said: "As-Salamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also replied to him, and he also sat down. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about him: He has attained thirty good deeds.
Hadith 8261
عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ بَنِي نُمَيْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ جَدِّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ أَبِي يَقْرَأُ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَعَلَى أَبِيكَ السَّلَامُ
A man from Banu Namir narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather, that he came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "My father sends you greetings of peace." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Peace be upon you and upon your father as well."
