بَابُ الْحَقِّ عَلَى السَّلَامِ وَفَضْلِهِ وَكَرَاهَةِ تَرْكِهِ
Chapter on the Right of Greeting with Salam, Its Virtue, and the Dislike of Abandoning It
Hadith 8248
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَا تَدْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ حَتَّى تُؤْمِنُوا وَلَا تُؤْمِنُوا حَتَّى تَحَابُّوا ثُمَّ قَالَ هَلْ أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَى شَيْءٍ إِذَا فَعَلْتُمُوهُ تَحَابَبْتُمْ أَفْشُوا السَّلَامَ بَيْنَكُمْ
Syedna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By Him in Whose hand is my soul! You will not enter Paradise until you have faith, and you will not have faith until you love one another. Shall I not tell you something which, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread the greeting of peace among yourselves.
Hadith 8249
عَنْ نَافِعٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا كَانَ يَقُولُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ أَفْشُوا السَّلَامَ وَأَطْعِمُوا الطَّعَامَ وَكُونُوا إِخْوَانًا كَمَا أَمَرَكُمُ اللَّهُ
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Spread peace, feed the people, and thus become brothers to one another, as Allah Almighty has commanded you.
Hadith 8250
عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَفْشُوا السَّلَامَ تَسْلَمُوا وَالْأَثَرَةُ أَشَرُّ
Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Spread salam (greetings of peace) generally, you will remain safe; giving preference to only some people (for meeting and greeting) is the worst thing.
Hadith 8251
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَلَامٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ لَمَّا قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ انْجَفَلَ النَّاسُ عَلَيْهِ فَكُنْتُ فِيمَنِ انْجَفَلَ فَلَمَّا تَبَيَّنْتُ وَجْهَهُ عَرَفْتُ أَنَّ وَجْهَهُ لَيْسَ بِوَجْهِ كَذَّابٍ فَكَانَ أَوَّلُ شَيْءٍ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ أَفْشُوا السَّلَامَ وَأَطْعِمُوا الطَّعَامَ وَصِلُوا الْأَرْحَامَ وَصَلُّوا وَالنَّاسُ نِيَامٌ تَدْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ بِسَلَامٍ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, people rushed towards him, and I was among them. When I looked closely at his blessed face, I knew that the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) could not be the face of a liar. Then the first thing I heard from him was this: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Spread peace, feed others, maintain ties of kinship, and pray at night when people are asleep; you will enter Paradise in peace.
Hadith 8252
عَنِ الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ الْعَوَّامِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَبَّ إِلَيْكُمْ دَاءُ الْأُمَمِ قَبْلَكُمْ الْحَسَدُ وَالْبَغْضَاءُ وَالْبَغْضَاءُ هِيَ الْحَالِقَةُ حَالِقَةُ الدِّينِ لَا حَالِقَةُ الشَّعَرِ وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ لَا تُؤْمِنُوا حَتَّى تَحَابُّوا أَفَلَا أُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِشَيْءٍ إِذَا فَعَلْتُمُوهُ تَحَابَبْتُمْ أَفْشُوا السَّلَامَ بَيْنَكُمْ
Sayyiduna Zubair bin Al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The disease of the previous nations will spread among you, and that disease is envy and malice. It is something that shaves off the religion; it does not shave off hair (rather, it destroys the religion). By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! You cannot be true believers until you love one another. Shall I not tell you something which, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread salam (greetings of peace) among yourselves.
Hadith 8253
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) وَفِيهِ لَا تَدْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ حَتَّى تُؤْمِنُوا وَلَا تُؤْمِنُوا حَتَّى تَحَابُّوا الْخَ
(Second chain) It is stated in this: You cannot enter Paradise until you have faith, and you cannot have faith until you love one another, … .
Hadith 8254
عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ السَّلَامُ تَحِيَّةُ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ
Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Saying Salam will be the gift of the people of Paradise.
Hadith 8255
عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنْ بَدَأَ بِالسَّلَامِ فَهُوَ أَوْلَى بِاللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَرَسُولِهِ
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever initiates the greeting of peace will be closer to Allah Almighty and His Messenger.
