باب مَا جَاءَ فِي الْعُطَاسِ وَآدَابِهِ وَتَشْمِيْتِ الْعَاطِسِ إِذَا حَمِدَ اللَّهَ
Chapter on What Has Been Reported Regarding Sneezing, Its Etiquette, and Saying “Yarhamuk Allah” When One Praises Allah
Hadith 8236
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا عَطَسَ وَضَعَ ثَوْبَهُ أَوْ يَدَهُ عَلَى جَبْهَتِهِ وَخَفَضَ أَوْ غَضَّ مِنْ صَوْتِهِ
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sneezed, he would place his garment or his hand on his forehead and would lower his voice.
Hadith 8237
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا قَالَ عَطَسَ رَجُلَانِ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَحَدُهُمَا أَشْرَفُ مِنَ الْآخَرِ فَعَطَسَ الشَّرِيفُ فَلَمْ يَحْمَدِ اللَّهَ فَلَمْ يُشَمِّتْهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعَطَسَ الْآخَرُ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ فَشَمَّتَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ فَقَالَ الشَّرِيفُ عَطَسْتُ عِنْدَكَ فَلَمْ تُشَمِّتْنِي وَعَطَسَ هَذَا عِنْدَكَ فَشَمَّتَّهُ قَالَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا ذَكَرَ اللَّهَ فَذَكَرْتُهُ وَإِنَّكَ نَسِيتَ اللَّهَ فَنَسِيتُكَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that two men sneezed in the presence of the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. One of them was more honorable than the other. The honorable one sneezed but did not say "Alhamdulillah," so the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not respond to his sneeze. The other sneezed and said "Alhamdulillah," so the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, responded to him. The honorable one said: "I also sneezed near you, but you did not respond to me, and he sneezed and you responded to him?" The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "He sneezed and mentioned Allah Almighty, so I also mentioned him. And you forgot Allah Almighty, so I also forgot you."
Hadith 8238
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا يَرْفَعُهُ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَضَعْ يَدَهُ عَلَى فِيهِ
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any one of you sneezes, he should place his hand over his mouth.
Hadith 8239
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يُحِبُّ الْعَطَاسَ وَيَكْرَهُ التَّثَاؤُبَ فَمَنْ عَطَسَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ فَحَقٌّ عَلَى مَنْ سَمِعَهُ أَنْ يَقُولَ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty likes sneezing and dislikes yawning. Whoever sneezes and says "Alhamdulillah," it is the right of the listener to say "Yarhamukallah."
Hadith 8240
عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ يَعْنِي وَالِدَهُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فِي بَيْتِ ابْنَةِ أُمِّ الْفَضْلِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَعَطَسْتُ فَلَمْ يُشَمِّتْنِي وَعَطَسَتْ فَشَمَّتَهَا فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَى أُمِّي فَأَخْبَرْتُهَا فَلَمَّا جَاءَهَا قَالَتْ عَطَسَ ابْنِي عِنْدَكَ فَلَمْ تُشَمِّتْهُ وَعَطَسَتْ فَشَمَّتَّهَا فَقَالَ إِنَّ ابْنَكِ عَطَسَ فَلَمْ يَحْمَدِ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى فَلَمْ أُشَمِّتْهُ وَإِنَّهَا عَطَسَتْ فَحَمِدَتِ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى فَشَمَّتُّهَا وَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ فَشَمِّتُوهُ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَحْمَدِ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَلَا تُشَمِّتُوهُ فَقَالَتْ أَحْسَنْتَ أَحْسَنْتَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Burdah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I went to my father, Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him), he was in the house of Umm Kulthum, the daughter of Umm Fadl (she was his wife). I sneezed, but my father did not respond to me. However, when Umm Kulthum sneezed, he responded to her. When I returned to my mother, I mentioned this to her. When my father came to my mother, she said: My son sneezed and you did not respond, but when Umm Kulthum sneezed, you responded to her. He said: Yes, your son sneezed and did not say “Alhamdulillah,” so I did not respond, and this woman sneezed and said “Alhamdulillah,” so I responded to her. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any of you sneezes and says “Alhamdulillah,” then respond to him, and if he does not say “Alhamdulillah,” then do not respond. She said: Then you did well, you did very well.
