باب أَخْذِ الشَّارِبِ وَإعفاء اللحية
Chapter on Trimming the Mustache and Letting the Beard Grow
Hadith 8185
عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَرْقَمَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنْ لَمْ يَأْخُذْ مِنْ شَارِبِهِ فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا
Sayyiduna Zaid bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever does not trim his moustache is not from among us.
Hadith 8186
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُصُّ شَارِبَهُ وَكَانَ أَبُوكُمْ إِبْرَاهِيمُ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ يَقُصُّ شَارِبَهُ
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to trim his moustache, and before him, your father Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) also used to trim his moustache.
Hadith 8187
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَحْفُوا الشَّوَارِبَ وَأَعْفُوا اللِّحَى
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Trim the moustaches thoroughly and let the beards grow.
Hadith 8188
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ خُذُوا مِنْ هَذَا وَدَعُوا هَذَا يَعْنِي شَارِبَهُ الْأَعْلَى يَأْخُذُ مِنْهُ يَعْنِي الْعَنْفَقَةَ
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Trim this hair and leave that. The intention of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was that the hair of the upper lip should be trimmed and the hair between the lower lip and the chin should be left (because they are part of the beard; these hairs are called "daadhi bachcha").
Hadith 8189
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ جُزُّوا وَفِي لَفْظٍ قُصُّوا الشَّوَارِبَ وَأَعْفُوا اللِّحَى
Syedna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Trim the moustaches and let the beards grow.
Hadith 8190
عَنْهُ أَيْضًا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ أَعْفُوا اللِّحَى وَخُذُوا الشَّوَارِبَ وَغَيِّرُوا شَيْبَكُمْ وَلَا تَشَبَّهُوا بِالْيَهُودِ وَالنَّصَارَى
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Let your beards grow, trim your moustaches, and change your white hair, and thus do not imitate the Jews and Christians.
Hadith 8191
عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ يَقُصُّونَ عَثَانِينَهُمْ وَيُوَفِّرُونَ سِبَالَهُمْ قَالَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قُصُّوا سِبَالَكُمْ وَوَفِّرُوا عَثَانِينَكُمْ وَخَالِفُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we said: O Messenger of Allah! The People of the Book trim their beards and let their mustaches grow. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Trim your mustaches and let your beards grow, and oppose the People of the Book.
Hadith 8192
عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ بِتُّ وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ ضِفْتُ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ فَأَمَرَ بِجَنْبٍ فَشُوِيَ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ الشَّفْرَةَ فَجَعَلَ يَحُزُّ لِي بِهَا مِنْهُ فَجَاءَ بِلَالٌ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يُؤْذِنُهُ بِالصَّلَاةِ فَأَلْقَى الشَّفْرَةَ وَقَالَ مَا لَهُ تَرِبَتْ يَدَاهُ قَالَ وَكَانَ شَارِبِي وَفِي فَقَصَّهُ لِي عَلَى سِوَاكٍ أَوْ قَالَ أَقُصُّهُ لَكَ عَلَى سِوَاكٍ
Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I stayed as a guest with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) one night. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that the meat from the side of a goat be prepared, so it was roasted. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a knife and began to cut pieces of that meat for me. Meanwhile, Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came and informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put the knife down right there and said: “May Bilal’s hands be dusted (what would have happened if he had waited a little longer).” Sayyiduna Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: My moustache had grown long, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed a miswak underneath and trimmed it. In another narration, it is mentioned: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I trim them on the miswak.”
