بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي الكُحْل
Chapter on What Has Been Reported Regarding Kohl
Hadith 8169
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَيْرُ أَكْحَالِكُمُ الْإِثْمِدُ زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ عِنْدَ النَّوْمِ يَجْلُو الْبَصَرَ وَيُنْبِتُ الشَّعْرَ
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best kohl among you is antimony (ithmid); use it before sleeping, it brightens the eyesight and grows (eyelash) hair."
Hadith 8170
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَ كَانَتْ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُكْحُلَةٌ يَكْتَحِلُ بِهَا عِنْدَ النَّوْمِ ثَلَاثًا فِي كُلِّ عَيْنٍ
(Second chain) The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) had a kohl container, and when he would go to sleep, he would apply kohl from it to each eye three times.
Hadith 8171
وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَالِثٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَكْتَحِلُ بِالْإِثْمِدِ كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنَامَ وَكَانَ يَكْتَحِلُ فِي كُلِّ عَيْنٍ ثَلَاثَةَ أَمْيَالٍ
(Third chain) The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, used to apply antimony kohl every night before sleeping. He, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, would put kohl three times in each eye.
Hadith 8172
عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِذَا اكْتَحَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَكْتَحِلْ وِتْرًا وَإِذَا اسْتَجْمَرَ فَلْيَسْتَجْمِرْ وِتْرًا
Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whenever any of you applies kohl, let him apply it an odd number of times, and when he performs istinja with stones, let him use an odd number of stones.
Hadith 8173
وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلُهُ
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) has also narrated a similar hadith of the Prophet.
Hadith 8174
عَنْ أَبِي النُّعْمَانِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ جَدِّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَكَانَ قَدْ أَدْرَكَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ اكْتَحِلُوا بِالْإِثْمِدِ الْمُرَوَّحِ فَإِنَّهُ يَجْلُو الْبَصَرَ وَيُنْبِتُ الشَّعْرَ
Sayyiduna Ma’bad bin Abi Huzah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Apply fragrant antimony (ithmid) kohl, for it sharpens the eyesight and causes hair to grow.
Hadith 8175
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ مَعْبَدِ بْنِ هَوْذَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ جَدِّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَ بِالْإِثْمِدِ الْمُرَوَّحِ عِنْدَ النَّوْمِ
(Second chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ma'bad bin Hawdhah Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, ordered the application of fragrant antimony kohl at bedtime.
Hadith 8176
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنِ اكْتَحَلَ فَلْيُوتِرْ وَمَنْ فَعَلَ فَقَدْ أَحْسَنَ وَمَنْ لَا فَلَا حَرَجَ عَلَيْهِ
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever applies kohl, let him apply it an odd number of times; whoever does so has done well, and whoever does not, there is no harm upon him.
