It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: Allah Almighty has cursed the woman who tattoos, the one who gets herself tattooed, the one who plucks hair, and the one who creates a gap between her teeth for the sake of beauty, those who alter the creation of Allah. Allah Almighty has cursed all of them. When this matter reached a woman named Umm Ya’qub who was present in the house, she came to Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: It has reached me that you have cursed such women. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Why should I not curse the one whom Allah’s Book has cursed and whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has cursed? The woman said: I have read the entire Qur’an from beginning to end in both covers, but I did not find any mention of a curse upon them. He said: If you had read the Qur’an, you would surely have found it. Have you not read this verse: {مَا آتَاکُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوہُ وَمَا نَہَاکُمْ عَنْہُ فَانْتَہُوا} … So take what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) gives you and refrain from what he forbids you? The woman said: Yes, of course, I have read it. Then Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden this act. The woman said: I think your family members also do this. He said: Go and see. She went and saw, but her assumption did not prove true; there was nothing of the sort there. She came back and said: There is nothing like that in your house. Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If you had seen such things in our house, then my family and I would not have lived together.

(Second chain) Masruq narrates that a woman came to Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: I have been informed that you prohibit the one who joins hair? He said: Yes, I do prohibit! She said: Do you find this in the Book of Allah, or did you hear it from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: I find it in the Book of Allah and I have also heard it from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The woman said: By Allah! I have carefully read the entire Qur'an from beginning to end, but I did not find this in it. He said: Have you not read this verse: {مَا آتَاکُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوہُ وَمَا نَہَاکُمْ عَنْہُ فَانْتَہُوا} ... So take what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) gives you and refrain from what he forbids you? She said: Yes, I have read it. At the end of this hadith, it is mentioned: If I prohibit something and then do it myself, then I have not remembered the advice of Allah's righteous servant (Sayyiduna Shu'ayb, peace be upon him), who said (as Allah Almighty said): {وَمَا أُرِیدُ أَنْ أُخَالِفَکُمْ إِلٰی مَا أَنْہَاکُمْ عَنْہُ} ... It is not my intention to do contrary to that which I forbid you from.
