باب الرُّحْصَةِ فِي إِطَالَةِ ذَيْلِ الْمَرْأَةِ
Chapter on the Permission for Women to Lengthen Their Garments
Hadith 8123
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ الَّذِي يَجُرُّ ثَوْبَهُ مِنَ الْخُيَلَاءِ لَا يَنْظُرُ اللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ قَالَ نَافِعٌ فَأُنْبِئْتُ أَنَّ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ فَكَيْفَ بِنَا قَالَ شِبْرًا قَالَتْ إِذَنْ تَبْدُو أَقْدَامُنَا قَالَ ذِرَاعًا لَا تَزِدْنَ عَلَيْهِ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever drags his garment on the ground out of arrogance, Allah Almighty will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection. Imam Nafi’ says: I have been informed that Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: What command is there for us regarding lowering the garment? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Let it down by a handspan. She said: Then our feet may become visible. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Let it down by a forearm’s length, but do not let it hang more than that.
Hadith 8124
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ رَخَّصَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِأُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الذَّيْلِ شِبْرًا فَاسْتَزَدْنَهُ فَزَادَهُنَّ شِبْرًا آخَرَ فَجَعَلْنَهُ ذِرَاعًا فَكُنَّ يُرْسِلْنَ إِلَيْنَا نَذْرَعُ لَهُنَّ ذِرَاعًا
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted the Mothers of the Believers to let their garments hang down by a handspan. But when they requested more, he (peace and blessings be upon him) allowed them to let it hang down by an additional handspan. Thus, they would let it hang down to a forearm’s length, and they used to send the cloth to us, and we would measure it.
Hadith 8125
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَ فَاطِمَةَ وَأُمَّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنْ تَجُرَّا الذَّيْلَ ذِرَاعًا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) instructed Sayyida Fatimah and Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them both) to let their garments hang down by one hand span.
Hadith 8126
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي ذُيُولِ النِّسَاءِ قَالَ شِبْرٌ قَالَتْ قُلْتُ إِذًا تَخْرُجُ سُوقُهُنَّ قَالَ فَذِرَاعٌ
Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding the hem of women’s garments that it should be one span. But I said: Then their shins will become visible. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then let it hang down a hand’s length.
Hadith 8127
عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَيْفَ بِالنِّسَاءِ قَالَ يُرْخِينَ شِبْرًا قُلْتُ إِذًا يَنْكَشِفُ عَنْهُنَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَذِرَاعٌ لَا يَزِدْنَ عَلَيْهِ
It is narrated from Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: I said, "O Messenger of Allah! What is the ruling for women regarding letting their garments hang down?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let the hem hang down by a handspan." I said, "O Messenger of Allah! Then their feet will become uncovered." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let it be a forearm's length, and do not increase more than that."
Hadith 8128
عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَيْضًا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَبَّرَ لِفَاطِمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا شِبْرًا مِنْ نِطَاقِهَا
It is also narrated from Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) measured a handspan from Sayyida Fatima's (may Allah be pleased with her) heels and left the cloth accordingly.
