Chapter on What Has Been Reported Regarding Images and Crosses in the House, Curtains, Clothing, Carpets, and the Like
Hadith 8077
عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنِ الصُّوَرِ فِي الْبَيْتِ وَنَهَى الرَّجُلَ أَنْ يَصْنَعَ ذَلِكَ وَأَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ زَمَنَ الْفَتْحِ وَهُوَ بِالْبَطْحَاءِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ الْكَعْبَةَ فَيَمْحُوَ كُلَّ صُورَةٍ فِيهَا وَلَمْ يَدْخُلِ الْبَيْتَ حَتَّى مُحِيَتْ كُلُّ صُورَةٍ فِيهِ زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ فَبَلَّ عُمَرُ ثَوْبًا وَمَحَاهَا فَدَخَلَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَا فِيهَا مِنْهَا شَيْءٌ
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade pictures in the house and forbade a person from making pictures. And on the day of the conquest of Makkah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) to go into the Ka'bah and erase every picture that was in it. At that time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the valley of Batha. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not enter the House of Allah until all the pictures in it had been erased. In one narration, it is mentioned: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) soaked a cloth and wiped out all those pictures. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the House of Allah, not a single picture remained in it.
Hadith 8078
عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ بَعَثَ عَامِلَ شُرْطَتِهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَتَدْرِي عَلَى مَا أَبْعَثُكَ عَلَى مَا بَعَثَنِي عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ أَنْحِتَ كُلَّ يَعْنِي صُورَةً وَأَنْ أُسَوِّيَ كُلَّ قَبْرٍ
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he sent an officer from his police and said to him: Do you know for what mission I am sending you? For the same task upon which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me: that I erase every image and level every grave.
Hadith 8079
عَنْ سَفِينَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا ضَافَ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَصَنَعُوا لَهُ طَعَامًا فَقَالَتْ فَاطِمَةُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا لَوْ دَعَوْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَكَلَ مَعَنَا فَأَرْسَلُوا إِلَيْهِ فَجَاءَ فَأَخَذَ بِعِضَادَتَيِ الْبَابِ فَإِذَا قِرَامٌ قَدْ ضُرِبَ بِهِ فِي نَاحِيَةِ الْبَيْتِ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجَعَ فَقَالَتْ فَاطِمَةُ لِعَلِيٍّ اتْبَعْهُ فَقُلْ لَهُ مَا رَجَعَكَ قَالَ فَتَبِعَهُ فَقَالَ مَا رَجَعَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ لِي أَوْ لَيْسَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَدْخُلَ بَيْتًا مُزَوَّقًا
Sayyiduna Safina (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man hosted Sayyiduna Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). He prepared food for him. Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) said: If we also invite the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he eats with us, (it would be better). So they sent a message to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he came. He was still at the threshold of the door when he saw a curtain hanging in the corner of the house. When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that curtain, he turned back. Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): Follow the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and ask him why he is returning. So he followed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Why are you returning? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is not appropriate for me or for a Prophet to enter a house decorated in such a manner.
Hadith 8080
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّهَا أَخْبَرَتْهُ أَنَّهَا اشْتَرَتْ نُمْرُقَةً فِيهَا تَصَاوِيرُ فَلَمَّا رَآهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَامَ عَلَى الْبَابِ فَلَمْ يَدْخُلْ فَعَرَفْتُ فِي وَجْهِهِ الْكَرَاهِيَةَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَتُوبُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَإِلَى رَسُولِهِ مَا أَذْنَبْتُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا بَالُ هَذِهِ النُّمْرُقَةِ فَقُلْتُ اشْتَرَيْتُهَا لِتَقْعُدَ عَلَيْهَا وَلِتَوَسَّدَهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ أَصْحَابَ هَذِهِ الصُّورِ يُعَذَّبُونَ بِهَا يُقَالُ لَهُمْ أَحْيُوا مَا خَلَقْتُمْ وَقَالَ إِنَّ الْبَيْتَ الَّذِي فِيهِ الصُّورَةُ لَا تَدْخُلُهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ
Narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: I bought a small cushion for the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it had pictures on it. When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw it, he stood at the door and did not enter. I perceived displeasure from his blessed face, and I said: O Messenger of Allah! I repent to Allah and His Messenger. What sin have I committed? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What is the matter with this cushion? I submitted: I bought it so that you may sit on it and lean against it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Those who make these pictures will be punished, and it will be said to them: Bring to life what you have created. And the angels do not enter a house in which there are pictures.
Hadith 8081
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَتَى فَاطِمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَوَجَدَ عَلَى بَابِهَا سِتْرًا فَلَمْ يَدْخُلْ عَلَيْهَا وَقَلَّمَا كَانَ يَدْخُلُ إِلَّا بَدَأَ بِهَا قَالَ فَجَاءَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَرَآهَا مُهْتَمَّةً فَقَالَ مَا لَكِ فَقَالَتْ جَاءَ إِلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمْ يَدْخُلْ عَلَيَّ فَأَتَاهُ عَلِيٌّ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ فَاطِمَةَ اشْتَدَّ عَلَيْهَا أَنَّكَ جِئْتَهَا فَلَمْ تَدْخُلْ عَلَيْهَا فَقَالَ وَمَا أَنَا وَالدُّنْيَا وَمَا أَنَا وَالرَّقْمُ قَالَ فَذَهَبَ إِلَى فَاطِمَةَ فَأَخْبَرَهَا بِقَوْلِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ فَقُلْ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَمَا تَأْمُرُنِي بِهِ فَقَالَ قُلْ لَهَا تُرْسِلُ بِهِ إِلَى بَنِي فُلَانٍ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) and found a curtain at her door, so because of this he did not enter, although it was rare that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would come and not first go to the house of Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her). When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came home, he saw Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) worried and asked: What is the matter? She said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did come to me but did not enter my house. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! This matter has been very hard on Fatima, that you came but did not enter the house? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What do I have to do with the world? What do I have to do with decoration and adornment? Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) and conveyed the message of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: Ask him (peace and blessings be upon him) what is the command for me now? He (Ali) went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Tell Fatima to send this cloth to the house of so-and-so.
Hadith 8082
عَنْ ثَوْبَانَ مَوْلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا سَافَرَ آخِرُ عَهْدِهِ بِإِنْسَانٍ فَاطِمَةُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا وَأَوَّلُ مَنْ يَدْخُلُ عَلَيْهِ إِذَا قَدِمَ فَاطِمَةُ قَالَ فَقَدِمَ مِنْ غَزَاةٍ لَهُ فَأَتَاهَا فَإِذَا هُوَ بِمِسْحٍ عَلَى بَابِهَا وَرَأَى عَلَى الْحَسَنِ وَالْحُسَيْنِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَلْبَيْنِ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ فَرَجَعَ وَلَمْ يَدْخُلْ عَلَيْهَا فَلَمَّا رَأَتْ ذَلِكَ فَاطِمَةُ ظَنَّتْ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَدْخُلْ عَلَيْهَا مِنْ أَجْلِ مَا رَأَى فَهَتَكَتِ السِّتْرَ وَنَزَعَتِ الْقَلْبَيْنِ مِنَ الصَّبِيَّيْنِ فَقَطَعَتْهُمَا فَبَكَى الصَّبِيَّانِ فَقَسَمَتْهُ بَيْنَهُمَا فَانْطَلَقَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُمَا يَبْكِيَانِ فَأَخَذَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْهُمَا فَقَالَ يَا ثَوْبَانُ اذْهَبْ بِهَذَا إِلَى بَنِي فُلَانٍ أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ بِالْمَدِينَةِ وَاشْتَرِ لِفَاطِمَةَ قِلَادَةً مِنْ عَصَبٍ وَسِوَارَيْنِ مِنْ عَاجٍ فَإِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ أَهْلُ بَيْتِي وَلَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ يَأْكُلُوا طَيِّبَاتِهِمْ فِي حَيَاتِهِمُ الدُّنْيَا
Mawla-e-Rasool Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that whenever the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out on a journey, he would meet Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) last, and when he returned from a journey, he would meet Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) first. In the same way, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from a battle, as per his custom, he went to meet Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her). Suddenly, he noticed a curtain at her door and saw Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) wearing silver bangles. So, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned without meeting her and did not enter her house. When Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) saw this, she thought that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not enter because of what he had seen. She tore down the curtain and took the bangles off the children’s hands and broke them into pieces. The children began to cry. She distributed the pieces among them. Both of them, while crying, went to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the silver from the children and said to me: “O Thawban! Take this to the people of such-and-such tribe and buy for Fatima a necklace made of animal sinew and for the children two ivory bangles in exchange for this. These are my Ahl al-Bayt, and I do not want them to use up their good deeds in this world.”
Hadith 8083
عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ كَتَبَ إِلَيَّ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ أَنْ أَنْسَخَ إِلَيْهِ وَصِيَّةَ فَاطِمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَكَانَ فِي وَصِيَّتِهَا السِّتْرُ الَّذِي يَزْعُمُ النَّاسُ أَنَّهَا أَحْدَثَتْهُ وَأَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا فَلَمَّا رَآهُ رَجَعَ
It is narrated from Muhammad bin Ali, he says: Umar bin Abdul Aziz wrote a letter to me asking that I write and send him the will of Sayyida Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). So, among her will was also that curtain, about which people thought that she had put it up. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to her and saw that curtain, he turned back.
Hadith 8084
حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَهُوَ مُتَّكِئٌ عَلَى وِسَادَةٍ فِيهَا تَمَاثِيلُ طَيْرٍ وَوَحْشٍ فَقُلْتُ أَلَيْسَ يُكْرَهُ هَذَا قَالَ لَا إِنَّمَا يُكْرَهُ مَا نُصِبَ نَصْبًا حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنْ صَوَّرَ صُورَةً عُذِّبَ وَقَالَ حَفْصٌ مَرَّةً كُلِّفَ أَنْ يَنْفُخَ فِيهَا وَلَيْسَ بِنَافِخٍ
Laith says: I went to Salim bin Abdullah, he was reclining on a cushion, and on that cushion were pictures of birds and wild animals. I said: Are these not disliked? He said: No, the disliked form is that in which the pictures are placed upright. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated to me that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever makes pictures will be punished, and he will be tormented by being told to put a soul into them, while he will not be able to put a soul into them.
Hadith 8085
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ كَانَ لَنَا سِتْرٌ فِيهِ تِمْثَالُ طَائِرٍ فَكَانَ الدَّاخِلُ إِذَا دَخَلَ اسْتَقْبَلَهُ فَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَا عَائِشَةُ حَوِّلِي هَذَا فَإِنِّي كُلَّمَا دَخَلْتُ فَرَأَيْتُهُ ذَكَرْتُ الدُّنْيَا وَكَانَتْ لَهُ قَطِيفَةٌ كُنَّا نَقُولُ عَلَمُهَا مِنْ حَرِيرٍ فَكُنَّا نَلْبَسُهَا
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that we had a curtain on which there was a picture of a bird. When someone would enter, it would be visible in front of them. One day, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Aisha! Turn it away. Whenever I enter and see it, the world comes to my mind." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a cloak on which there were marks of silk; we used to wear it.
Hadith 8086
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَيْضًا أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ يَكُنْ يَتْرُكْ فِي بَيْتِهِ شَيْئًا وَفِي لَفْظٍ ثَوْبًا فِيهِ تَصْلِيبٌ إِلَّا قَضَبَهُ
Narrated by Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not allow anything in his house that had the sign of a cross on it, except that he would cut it out.
Hadith 8087
عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَتْنِي دَقِرَةُ أُمُّ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أُذَيْنَةَ قَالَتْ كُنَّا نَطُوفُ بِالْبَيْتِ مَعَ أُمِّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَرَأَتْ عَلَى امْرَأَةٍ بُرْدًا فِيهِ تَصْلِيبٌ فَقَالَتْ أُمُّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ اطْرَحِيهِ اطْرَحِيهِ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا رَأَى نَحْوَ هَذَا قَضَبَهُ
It is narrated from Umm Abdur Rahman Daqrah, she says: I was performing Tawaf of the House of Allah with Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and she saw a woman wearing a sheet in which there was a cross sign. Sayyida said: Throw it away, throw it away, when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to see it, he would cut it out.
Hadith 8088
عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ كَانَ قِرَامٌ لِعَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَدْ سَتَرَتْ بِهِ جَانِبَ بَيْتِهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمِيطِي عَنَّا قِرَامَكِ هَذَا فَإِنَّ تَصَاوِيرَهُ تَعْرِضُ لِي فِي صَلَاتِي
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) had hung a curtain in the corner of her house. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Aisha! Remove this curtain from us, its images kept appearing before me during prayer.
Hadith 8089
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَدِ اسْتَتَرْتُ بِقِرَامٍ فِيهِ تَمَاثِيلُ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ تَلَوَّنَ وَجْهُهُ وَقَالَ مَرَّةً تَغَيَّرَ وَجْهُهُ وَهَتَكَهُ بِيَدِهِ وَقَالَ أَشَدُّ النَّاسِ عَذَابًا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ الَّذِينَ يُضَاهُونَ بِخَلْقِ اللَّهِ جَلَّ وَعَزَّ أَوْ يُشَبِّهُونَ قَالَ سُفْيَانُ سَوَاءٌ
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me while I had hung up a curtain with pictures on it. When he (peace be upon him) saw it, his face changed with anger, and he tore that curtain with his blessed hand and said: "Among the people, those who will have the severest punishment with Allah on the Day of Resurrection are those who imitate Allah’s creation (i.e., make pictures)." Imam Sufyan said: Both words have the same meaning.
Hadith 8090
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَيْضًا قَالَتْ اتَّخَذْتُ دُرْنُوكًا فِيهِ الصُّورُ وَفِي لَفْظٍ فِيهِ الْخَيْلُ أُولَاتِ الْأَجْنِحَةِ فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَهَتَكَهُ وَقَالَ إِنَّ أَشَدَّ النَّاسِ عَذَابًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ الَّذِينَ يُشَبِّهُونَ بِخَلْقِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ
Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that I made a curtain which had pictures on it. In one narration, it is mentioned: it had winged horses on it. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and tore it apart and said: On the Day of Resurrection, among the people, the most severe punishment will be for those who make things resembling Allah’s creation.
Hadith 8091
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ جَعَلْتُ عَلَى بَابِ بَيْتِي سِتْرًا فِيهِ تَصَاوِيرُ فَلَمَّا أَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِيَدْخُلَ نَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ فَهَتَكَهُ قَالَتْ فَأَخَذْتُهُ فَقَطَعْتُ مِنْهُ نُمْرُقَتَيْنِ فَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَرْتَفِقُهُمَا
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that I hung a curtain with pictures on my door. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came in, he saw that curtain and tore it apart. I took it and made two cushions out of it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to lean on them.
Hadith 8092
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّهَا اشْتَرَتْ نَمَطًا فِيهِ تَصَاوِيرُ فَأَرَادَتْ أَنْ تَصْنَعَهُ حَجَلَةً فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَرَتْهُ إِيَّاهُ وَأَخْبَرَتْهُ أَنَّهَا تُرِيدُ أَنْ تَصْنَعَهُ حَجَلَةً فَقَالَ لَهَا اقْطَعِيهِ وِسَادَتَيْنِ قَالَتْ فَفَعَلْتُ فَكُنْتُ أَتَوَسَّدُهُمَا وَيَتَوَسَّدُهُمَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she once bought a thin sheet, which had pictures on it. She intended to make a bridal chamber from it. When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came, she showed him that curtain and told him that she wanted to make a bridal chamber from it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Make two cushions from it. She says: So I did so, and then both I and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would recline on those cushions.
Hadith 8093
عَنْ بُسْرِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ صَاحِبِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا تَدْخُلُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ صُورَةٌ قَالَ بُسْرٌ ثُمَّ اشْتَكَى فَعُدْنَاهُ فَإِذَا عَلَى بَابِهِ سِتْرٌ فِيهِ صُورَةٌ فَقُلْتُ لِعُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ الْخَوْلَانِيِّ رَبِيبِ مَيْمُونَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَلَمْ يُخْبِرْنَا وَيَذْكُرِ الصُّوَرَ يَوْمَ الْأَوَّلِ فَقَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ أَلَمْ تَسْمَعْهُ يَقُولُ قَالَ إِلَّا رَقْمٌ فِي ثَوْبٍ قَالَ هَاشِمٌ أَلَمْ يُخْبِرْنَا زَيْدٌ عَنِ الصُّوَرِ يَوْمَ الْأَوَّلِ فَقَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ أَلَمْ تَسْمَعْهُ حِينَ قَالَ إِلَّا رَقْمٌ فِي ثَوْبٍ وَكَذَا قَالَ يُونُسُ
It is narrated from Zaid bin Khalid that the companion of the Messenger of Allah, Sayyiduna Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him), states that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Angels do not enter a house in which there is a picture. Basar says: Then Zaid bin Khalid fell ill and we went to visit him and saw that there was a curtain hanging at his door, and it had a picture on it. I said to Ubaidullah Khawlani, who was raised by Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her): Did he not tell us in the past days about the condemnation of pictures? But now there is a curtain with a picture at his door. Ubaidullah said: Did you not hear that he said that decoration on cloth is permitted? Hashim said: Did Zaid not tell us in the past days that pictures are not permissible? So Ubaidullah said: Did you not hear that decoration on cloth is an exception?
Hadith 8094
عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ عَلَى أَبِي طَلْحَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَعُودُهُ قَالَ فَوَجَدْنَا عِنْدَهُ سَهْلَ بْنَ حُنَيْفٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ فَدَعَا أَبُو طَلْحَةَ إِنْسَانًا فَنَزَعَ نَمَطًا تَحْتَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ سَهْلُ بْنُ حُنَيْفٍ لِمَ تَنْتَزِعُهُ قَالَ لِأَنَّ فِيهِ تَصَاوِيرَ وَقَدْ قَالَ فِيهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا قَدْ عَلِمْتَ قَالَ سَهْلٌ أَوَلَمْ يَقُلْ إِلَّا مَا كَانَ رَقْمًا فِي ثَوْبٍ قَالَ بَلَى وَلَكِنَّهُ أَطْيَبُ لِنَفْسِي
Ubaidullah bin Abdullah narrates that I came to Sayyiduna Abu Talha Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) to visit him during his illness. I found Sahl bin Hunaif with him. Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) called a man, and he removed a sheet from beneath him. Sayyiduna Sahl said to him: Why are you removing it? He replied: There are pictures on it, and you already know what the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has said regarding pictures. Sahl said: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has made an exception for pictures on cloth. He said: That is correct, but my heart is content this way.
Hadith 8095
عَنْ شُعْبَةَ أَنَّ الْمِسْوَرَ بْنَ مَخْرَمَةَ دَخَلَ عَلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا يَعُودُهُ مِنْ وَجَعٍ وَعَلَيْهِ بُرْدُ إِسْتَبْرَقٍ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا عَبَّاسٍ مَا هَذَا الثَّوْبُ قَالَ وَمَا هُوَ قَالَ هَذَا الْإِسْتَبْرَقُ قَالَ وَاللَّهِ مَا عَلِمْتُ بِهِ وَمَا أَظُنُّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْ هَذَا حِينَ نَهَى عَنْهُ إِلَّا لِلتَّجَبُّرِ وَالتَّكَبُّرِ وَلَسْنَا بِحَمْدِ اللَّهِ كَذَلِكَ قَالَ فَمَا هَذِهِ التَّصَاوِيرُ فِي الْكَانُونِ قَالَ أَلَا تَرَى قَدْ أَحْرَقْنَاهَا بِالنَّارِ فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ الْمِسْوَرُ قَالَ انْزَعُوا هَذَا الثَّوْبَ عَنِّي وَاقْطَعُوا رُءُوسَ هَذِهِ التَّمَاثِيلِ قَالُوا يَا أَبَا عَبَّاسٍ لَوْ ذَهَبْتَ بِهَا إِلَى السُّوقِ كَانَ أَنْفَقَ لَهَا مَعَ الرَّأْسِ قَالَ لَا فَأَمَرَ بِقَطْعِ رُءُوسِهَا
It is narrated from Shu’bah that Sayyiduna Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) went to visit Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) due to his illness. He had a silk sheet over him. I (Miswar) said, “O Abu Abbas! Why this cloth?” He said, “What is the matter?” I said, “This is silk.” He said, “By Allah! I did not know, but I think that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade silk due to pride and arrogance, and, praise be to Allah, we are not like that.” I said, “Then what about these pictures in the fireplace?” He said, “Do you not see that we are about to burn them in the fire?” When Miswar left, he said, “Remove this cloth from me and cut off the heads of these pictures.” The people said, “O Ibn Abbas! If you take it to the market, it will sell quickly and at a good price with the heads intact.” He said, “No,” and then ordered the heads of the pictures to be cut off.
