بَابُ لَا تَدْخُلُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ بَيْتًا فِيْهِ صُورَةٌ أَوْ كَلْبٌ أَوْ جُنُبٌ
Chapter on Angels Do Not Enter a House with an Image, a Dog, or a Junub Person
Hadith 8063
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُجَيٍّ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ لِي عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ كَانَتْ لِي مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْزِلَةٌ لَمْ تَكُنْ لِأَحَدٍ مِنَ الْخَلَائِقِ إِنِّي كُنْتُ آتِيهِ كُلَّ سَحَرٍ فَأُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى يَتَنَحْنَحَ وَإِنِّي جِئْتُ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ عَلَى رِسْلِكَ يَا أَبَا حَسَنٍ حَتَّى أَخْرُجَ إِلَيْكَ فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ إِلَيَّ قُلْتُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ أَغْضَبَكَ أَحَدٌ قَالَ لَا قُلْتُ فَمَا لَكَ لَا تُكَلِّمُنِي فِيمَا مَضَى حَتَّى كَلَّمْتَنِي اللَّيْلَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ فِي الْحُجْرَةِ حَرَكَةً فَقُلْتُ مَنْ هَذَا فَقَالَ أَنَا جِبْرِيلُ قُلْتُ ادْخُلْ قَالَ لَا اخْرُجْ إِلَيَّ فَلَمَّا خَرَجْتُ قَالَ إِنَّ فِي بَيْتِكَ شَيْئًا لَا يَدْخُلُهُ مَلَكٌ مَا دَامَ فِيهِ قُلْتُ مَا أَعْلَمُهُ يَا جِبْرِيلُ قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَانْظُرْ فَفَتَحْتُ الْبَيْتَ فَلَمْ أَجِدْ فِيهِ شَيْئًا غَيْرَ جَرْوِ كَلْبٍ كَانَ يَلْعَبُ بِهِ الْحَسَنُ قُلْتُ مَا وَجَدْتُ إِلَّا جَرْوًا قَالَ إِنَّهَا ثَلَاثٌ لَنْ يَلِجَ مَلَكٌ مَا دَامَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا وَاحِدٌ مِنْهَا كَلْبٌ أَوْ جَنَابَةٌ أَوْ صُورَةُ رُوحٍ
It is narrated from Najji Hadhrami, he says: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Among the people, the honor I had with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was not given to anyone else. I used to visit him every time at suhoor (pre-dawn), and when I greeted him with salam, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would clear his throat. One night I came and, while greeting, said: O Prophet of Allah! Peace be upon you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Abu Hasan! Wait a little, do not enter until I come out. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) came out, I said: O Prophet of Allah! Has someone angered you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No. I said: What is the matter that before this you would not speak to me, but only gesture, and tonight you spoke? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Actually, the matter is that I heard some movement in the chamber, so I said: Who is it? He said: I am Jibreel. I said: Enter. He said: No, I will not enter, you come out yourself. When I came out, he said: There is something in your room, as long as it is there, I cannot enter. I said: O Jibreel! I do not know what that thing is. He said: Go and see. So I opened the door and saw that there was a puppy in the house, with which Hasan was playing. I said: There is only a puppy in the house. He said: There are three things, as long as they are present, an angel will not enter that place: a dog, a person in a state of janabah, and an image of a living being.
Hadith 8064
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ كَانَ لِي مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَدْخَلَانِ بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ وَكُنْتُ إِذَا دَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي تَنَحْنَحَ فَأَتَيْتُهُ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ فَقَالَ أَتَدْرِي مَا أَحْدَثَ الْمَلَكُ اللَّيْلَةَ كُنْتُ أُصَلِّي فَسَمِعْتُ خَشْفَةً فِي الدَّارِ فَخَرَجْتُ فَإِذَا جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ فَقَالَ مَا زِلْتُ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةَ أَنْتَظِرُكَ إِنَّ فِي بَيْتِكَ كَلْبًا فَلَمْ أَسْتَطِعْ الدُّخُولَ وَإِنَّا لَا نَدْخُلُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ كَلْبٌ وَلَا جُنُبٌ وَلَا تِمْثَالٌ
(Second chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I used to visit the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) twice a day, day and night. Whenever I entered upon him and he was praying, he would clear his throat. One night I came to him and he said: Do you know that an angel has brought a new command? Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I was praying when I heard some movement in the house. When I went outside, it was Jibreel (peace be upon him). He said: I was waiting for you this night, but there was a dog in your house, so I could not enter. We do not enter a house in which there is a dog, a person in a state of major impurity (junub), or a picture.
Hadith 8065
عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ أَتَانِي جِبْرِيلُ زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ يُسَلِّمُ عَلَيَّ فَلَمْ يَدْخُلْ عَلَيَّ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَدْخُلَ قَالَ إِنَّا لَا نَدْخُلُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ صُورَةٌ وَلَا بَوْلٌ
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to me, he greeted me with salam, but did not enter. I asked him: What is preventing you from coming inside? He said: We do not enter a house in which there is an image or urine.
Hadith 8066
وَعَنْ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ إِنَّ جِبْرِيلَ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ إِنَّا لَا نَدْخُلُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ صُورَةٌ أَوْ كَلْبٌ وَكَانَ الْكَلْبُ لِلْحَسَنِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فِي الْبَيْتِ
(Second chain) Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Verily, we do not enter that house in which there is a picture or a dog. The dog that was in the house belonged to Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him).
Hadith 8067
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ دَخَلَ الْبَيْتَ وَجَدَ فِيهِ صُورَةَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَصُورَةَ مَرْيَمَ فَقَالَ أَمَّا هُمْ فَقَدْ سَمِعُوا أَنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ لَا تَدْخُلُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ صُورَةٌ وَهَذَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ مُصَوَّرًا فَمَا بَالُهُ يَسْتَقْسِمُ
Syedna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the House of Allah, there were pictures of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and Maryam (may Allah have mercy on her) in it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Beware! They have heard that angels do not enter this house, in which there is a picture in the body. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) has been presented in the picture; what has happened to them that they are practicing divination with arrows (i.e., they did not practice divination with arrows).
Hadith 8068
عَنْ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ لَا تَدْخُلُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ كَلْبٌ وَلَا صُورَةُ تَمَاثِيلَ
Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or images of statues.
Hadith 8069
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَتَانِي جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ فَقَالَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ أَتَيْتُكَ اللَّيْلَةَ فَلَمْ يَمْنَعْنِي أَنْ أَدْخُلَ عَلَيْكَ الْبَيْتَ الَّذِي أَنْتَ فِيهِ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ كَانَ فِي الْبَيْتِ تِمْثَالُ رَجُلٍ وَكَانَ فِي الْبَيْتِ قِرَامُ سِتْرٍ فِيهِ تَمَاثِيلُ فَمُرْ بِرَأْسِ التِّمْثَالِ يُقْطَعْ فَيُصَيَّرَ كَهَيْئَةِ الشَّجَرَةِ وَمُرْ بِالسِّتْرِ يُقْطَعْ فَيُجْعَلَ مِنْهُ وِسَادَتَانِ تُوطَآنِ وَمُرْ بِالْكَلْبِ فَيُخْرَجَ فَفَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَإِذَا الْكَلْبُ جَرْوٌ كَانَ لِلْحَسَنِ وَالْحُسَيْنِ عَلَيْهِمَا السَّلَامُ تَحْتَ نَضَدٍ لَهُمَا
Syedna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to me and said: I came last night to meet you, but I was prevented from entering the house in which you were present because there was a statue of a man in the house, and there was a thin curtain in the house. So, command that the heads of the pictures be cut off so that they become like trees, and command regarding the curtain that it be cut and made into two cushions that can be trampled upon, and command regarding the dog that it be expelled. Thus, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did so. That puppy actually belonged to Syedna Hasan and Syedna Husain (may Allah be pleased with them), which was lying under the cot with the belongings.
