بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي النَّهْيِ عَنِ التَّصْوِيْرِ وَ وَعِيْدِ فَاعِلِهِ
Chapter on the Prohibition of Image-Making and the Threat for Its Doer
Hadith 8052
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ صَوَّرَ صُورَةً عُذِّبَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ حَتَّى يَنْفُخَ فِيهَا وَلَيْسَ بِنَافِخٍ وَمَنْ تَحَلَّمَ عُذِّبَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ حَتَّى يَعْقِدَ شَعِيرَتَيْنِ وَلَيْسَ عَاقِدًا وَمَنِ اسْتَمَعَ إِلَى حَدِيثِ قَوْمٍ يَفِرُّونَ بِهِ مِنْهُ صُبَّ فِي أُذُنَيْهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عَذَابٌ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever makes a picture will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and this will continue until he breathes life into it, while he will never be able to breathe life into it. Whoever pretends in a dream will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and this punishment will continue until he ties a knot between two grains of barley. And whoever listens to the conversation of people who move away from him (i.e., do not want him to listen), then on the Day of Resurrection, molten lead will be poured into his ears as punishment.
Hadith 8053
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلُهُ وَفِيهِ وَمَنِ اسْتَمَعَ إِلَى حَدِيثِ قَوْمٍ وَلَا يُعْجِبُهُمْ أَنْ يُسْمَعَ حَدِيثُهُمْ أُذِيبَ فِي أُذُنِهِ الْآنُكُ
A similar hadith is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, except that in it, the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever listens to the conversation of people who do not like him to listen, then molten lead will be poured into his ears.
Hadith 8054
عَنِ النَّضْرِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا وَهُوَ يُفْتِي النَّاسَ لَا يُسْنِدُ إِلَى نَبِيِّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَيْئًا مِنْ فُتْيَاهُ حَتَّى جَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِرَاقِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِرَاقِ وَإِنِّي أُصَوِّرُ هَذِهِ التَّصَاوِيرَ فَقَالَ لَهُ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ادْنُهْ إِمَّا مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا فَدَنَا فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَنْ صَوَّرَ صُورَةً فِي الْدُّنْيَا يُكَلَّفُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَنْ يَنْفُخَ فِيهَا الرُّوحَ وَلَيْسَ بِنَافِخٍ
Narrated from Sayyiduna Nadr bin Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I was with Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) while he was giving fatwas to the people and in his fatwas he did not attribute anything to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). A man from Iraq came to him and said: I am a man from Iraq, I make these images. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to him two or three times: Come closer. Then he said: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever makes an image in this world, he will be punished on the Day of Resurrection by being commanded to breathe life into that image, but he will not be able to breathe life into it.
Hadith 8055
عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا الْعَبَّاسِ إِنِّي رَجُلٌ أُصَوِّرُ هَذِهِ الصُّوَرَ وَأَصْنَعُ هَذِهِ الصُّوَرَ فَأَفْتِنِي فِيهَا قَالَ ادْنُ مِنِّي فَدَنَا مِنْهُ حَتَّى وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ قَالَ أُنَبِّئُكَ بِمَا سَمِعْتُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ كُلُّ مُصَوِّرٍ فِي النَّارِ يُجْعَلُ لَهُ بِكُلِّ صُورَةٍ صَوَّرَهَا نَفْسٌ تُعَذِّبُهُ فِي جَهَنَّمَ فَإِنْ كُنْتَ لَا بُدَّ فَاعِلًا فَاجْعَلِ الشَّجَرَ وَمَا لَا نَفْسَ لَهُ
Saeed bin Abu Hasan says: A man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) and said: O Ibn Abbas! I make pictures, give me a verdict about them. He said: Come near me. So he came near, and he placed his hand on his head and said: I inform you of what I heard from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Every image-maker will go to Hell. For every picture he made, a soul will be created for it, and it will punish him in Hell. If you must make pictures, then make pictures of trees and things that do not have souls.
Hadith 8056
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ مِنْ أَشَدِّ أَهْلِ النَّارِ عَذَابًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ الْمُصَوِّرِينَ وَقَالَ وَكِيعٌ أَشَدُّ النَّاسِ
Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Among the people of Hell, those who will have the severest punishment on the Day of Resurrection will be the image-makers.
Hadith 8057
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ الْمُصَوِّرُونَ يُعَذَّبُونَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَيُقَالُ أَحْيُوا مَا خَلَقْتُمْ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The image-makers will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them, "Bring to life what you have created."
Hadith 8058
حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَهُوَ مُتَّكِئٌ عَلَى وِسَادَةٍ فِيهَا تَمَاثِيلُ طَيْرٍ وَوَحْشٍ فَقُلْتُ أَلَيْسَ يُكْرَهُ هَذَا قَالَ لَا إِنَّمَا يُكْرَهُ مَا نُصِبَ نَصْبًا حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنْ صَوَّرَ صُورَةً عُذِّبَ وَقَالَ حَفْصٌ مَرَّةً كُلِّفَ أَنْ يَنْفُخَ فِيهَا وَلَيْسَ بِنَافِخٍ
Laith says: I went to Salim bin Abdullah, he was reclining on a cushion, and on that cushion were pictures of birds and wild animals. I said: Are these not disliked? He said: No, the disliked form is that in which the pictures are placed upright. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated to me that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever makes pictures will be punished, and he will be tormented by being told to put a soul into them, while he will not be able to put a soul into them.
Hadith 8059
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّ أَصْحَابَ هَذِهِ الصُّوَرِ يُعَذَّبُونَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ يُقَالُ لَهُمْ أَحْيُوا مَا خَلَقْتُمْ
Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Those who make images will be subjected to punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them: Put life into what you have created.
Hadith 8060
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنْ خَلَقَ كَخَلْقِي فَلْيَخْلُقُوا بَعُوضَةً وَلْيَخْلُقُوا ذَرَّةً قَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ يَخْلُقُ
Syedna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates that it is reported from the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that Allah Almighty said: Who can be a greater wrongdoer than the one who creates something resembling My creation? They should try to create a mosquito or create an atom.
Hadith 8061
عَنْ عُمَارَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِي زُرْعَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ مَعَ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ دَارَ مَرْوَانَ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ فَرَأَى فِيهَا تَصَاوِيرَ وَهِيَ تُبْنَى فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ يَقُولُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنْ ذَهَبَ يَخْلُقُ خَلْقًا كَخَلْقِي فَلْيَخْلُقُوا ذَرَّةً أَوْ فَلْيَخْلُقُوا حَبَّةً أَوْ لِيَخْلُقُوا شَعِيرَةً
Abu Zar’ah says: I entered the house of Marwan bin Hakam with Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), and they saw that pictures were being made there. Then Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah said: I heard from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated from Allah Almighty that Allah Almighty said: Who is a greater wrongdoer than the one who tries to create like My creation? They should try to create a particle, create a grain, create a barley seed.
Hadith 8062
عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ كَانَ مَعَ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَرَأَى أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ فَرَسًا مِنْ رِقَاعٍ فِي يَدِ جَارِيَةٍ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَرَى هَذَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّمَا يَعْمَلُ هَذَا مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he saw a girl holding a horse made of pieces of cloth in her hand and said: Do you not see this? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The person who does this is the one who will have no share on the Day of Resurrection.
