باب إباحة اليسير مِنَ الْحَرِيرِ كَالعَلَم وَالرقعه وَنَحْوِهَا
Chapter on Permitting a Small Amount of Silk Such as a Stripe or Patch and the Like
Hadith 8044
عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيَّ قَالَ جَاءَنَا كِتَابُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَنَحْنُ بِآذَرْبَيْجَانَ مَعَ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ فَرْقَدٍ أَوْ بِالشَّامِ أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنِ الْحَرِيرِ إِلَّا هَكَذَا أُصْبُعَيْنِ قَالَ أَبُو عُثْمَانَ فَمَا عَتَّمْنَا إِلَّا أَنَّهُ الْأَعْلَامُ
Abu Uthman Hindi says: A letter came to us from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him); we were with Sayyiduna Utbah bin Farqad (may Allah be pleased with him) in Azerbaijan or Syria. In that letter, it was written: "As for what follows! The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade wearing silk, except for the width of two fingers." Abu Uthman says: We understood that (by two fingers it means) that stripes or marks of silk of that width are permissible.
Hadith 8045
عَنْ قَتَادَةَ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ فَرْقَدٍ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ بِأَشْيَاءَ يُحَدِّثُهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَكَانَ فِيمَا كَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا يَلْبَسُ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا مَنْ لَيْسَ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ إِلَّا هَكَذَا وَقَالَ بِإِصْبَعَيْهِ السَّبَّابَةِ وَالْوُسْطَى قَالَ أَبُو عُثْمَانَ فَرَأَيْتُ أَنَّهَا أَزْرَارُ الطَّيَالِسَةِ حِينَ رَأَيْنَا الطَّيَالِسَةَ
(Second chain) Abu Uthman Nahdi says: We were with Sayyiduna Utbah bin Farqad (may Allah be pleased with him), when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent him some written instructions, which he had narrated from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). In it, it was also written that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Only that person wears silk in this world who has no share in the Hereafter, except equal to two fingers. Along with this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured with his index and middle fingers. Abu Uthman says: When we saw the Tayalisi garment, we estimated that the buttons of the Tayalisi garment were of this amount.
Hadith 8046
عَنْ قَتَادَةَ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَالِثٍ عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ قَالَ جَاءَنَا كِتَابُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَنَحْنُ بِآذَرْبَيْجَانَ يَا عُتْبَةَ بْنَ فَرْقَدٍ وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالتَّنَعُّمَ وَزِيَّ أَهْلِ الشِّرْكِ وَلُبْسَ الْحَرِيرِ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَانَا عَنْ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ وَقَالَ إِلَّا هَكَذَا وَرَفَعَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِصْبَعَيْهِ
(Third chain) Abu Uthman says: We received a letter from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) while we were in Azerbaijan. It was written in it: O Utbah bin Farqad! Beware of luxury, adopting the appearance of the polytheists, and wearing silk garments, because the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from wearing silk, except for this much—at the same time, he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his two fingers to clarify.
Hadith 8047
عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفْلَةَ أَنَّ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ خَطَبَ النَّاسَ بِالْجَابِيَةِ فَقَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ إِلَّا مَوْضِعَ إِصْبَعَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةٍ أَوْ أَرْبَعَةٍ وَأَشَارَ بِكَفِّهِ
Suwaid bin Ghaflah says: Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon at the place of Jabiya and said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade wearing silk, except for an amount equal to two or three or four fingers, and at the same time, he (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured with his palm.
Hadith 8048
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ إِنَّمَا نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الثَّوْبِ الْمُصْمَتِ مِنْ قَزٍّ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ أَمَّا السَّدَى وَالْعَلَمُ فَلَا نَرَى بِهِ بَأْسًا
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that garment which is made entirely of silk. If the warp of the cloth is of silk or the embroidery is of silk, then we do not consider there to be any harm in it.
Hadith 8049
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مَوْلَى أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَ أَرْسَلَتْنِي أَسْمَاءُ إِلَى ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّهُ بَلَغَهَا أَنَّكَ تُحَرِّمُ أَشْيَاءَ ثَلَاثَةً الْعَلَمَ فِي الثَّوْبِ وَمِيثَرَةَ الْأُرْجُوَانِ وَصَوْمَ رَجَبٍ كُلِّهِ فَقَالَ أَمَّا مَا ذَكَرْتَ مِنْ صَوْمِ رَجَبٍ فَكَيْفَ بِمَنْ يَصُومُ الْأَبَدَ وَأَمَّا مَا ذَكَرْتَ مِنَ الْعَلَمِ فِي الثَّوْبِ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَنْ لَبِسَ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الْدُّنْيَا لَمْ يَلْبَسْهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ
It is narrated from Sayyida Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) by her freed slave Abdullah, who says: Sayyida Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) sent me to Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) to ask him about this matter: Has it reached you from Sayyida Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) that you declare three things forbidden: putting marks and designs on clothes, red silk cushions, and fasting all the days of Rajab? He replied: As for what you said that I do not fast all the days of the month of Rajab, then how would it be for the one who always fasts? As for what you mentioned about marks on clothes, that I prohibit it, I heard Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) say that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever wears silk in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter.
Hadith 8050
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مَوْلَى أَسْمَاءَ أَيْضًا عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَ أَخْرَجَتْ إِلَيَّ جُبَّةً طَيَالِسَةً عَلَيْهَا لِبْنَةٌ شِبْرٌ مِنْ دِيبَاجٍ كِسْرَوَانِيٍّ وَفَرْجَاهَا مَكْفُوفَانِ بِهِ قَالَتْ هَذِهِ جُبَّةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَلْبَسُهَا كَانَتْ عِنْدَ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَلَمَّا قُبِضَتْ عَائِشَةُ قَبَضْتُهَا إِلَيَّ فَنَحْنُ نَغْسِلُهَا لِلْمَرِيضِ مِنَّا يَسْتَشْفِي بِهَا
Abdullah narrates that I went to Lady Asma (may Allah be pleased with her), and she brought out a Tayalisi cloak, which had a piece of Persian silk attached to its hem, and its slits were also of silk. She said, "This was the cloak of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), which he used to wear. It was with Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and when she passed away, I took it. We soak it in water for a sick person and seek healing through its blessing."
Hadith 8051
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مَوْلَى أَسْمَاءَ أَيْضًا قَالَ أَخْرَجَتْ إِلَيْنَا أَسْمَاءُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا جُبَّةً مَزْرُورَةً بِالدِّيبَاجِ فَقَالَتْ فِي هَذِهِ كَانَ يَلْقَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْعَدُوَّ
Abdullah narrates that Sayyida Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) placed a cloak before us, which had silk buttons. She said: This is the cloak in which the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to meet the enemy, (that is, he wore it in both times of peace and war).
