بَابُ مَا جَاءَ عَامًا فِي تَحْرِيمِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْحَرِيرِ
Chapter on What Has Been Reported Generally Regarding the Prohibition of Gold and Silk
Hadith 8005
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُطَوِّقَ حَبِيبَهُ طَوْقًا مِنْ نَارٍ فَلْيُطَوِّقْهُ طَوْقًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُسَوِّرَ حَبِيبَهُ سِوَارًا مِنْ نَارٍ فَلْيُسَوِّرْهُ بِسِوَارٍ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُحَلِّقَ حَبِيبَهُ حَلْقَةً مِنْ نَارٍ فَلْيُحَلِّقْهُ حَلْقَةً مِنْ ذَهَبٍ وَلَكِنْ عَلَيْكُمْ بِالْفِضَّةِ الْعَبُوا بِهَا لَعِبًا الْعَبُوا بِهَا لَعِبًا
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever wishes to make his beloved wear a collar of fire, then let him make him wear a necklace of gold; whoever wishes to make his beloved wear a bracelet of fire, then let him make him wear a bracelet of gold; and whoever desires to make his beloved wear a ring of fire, then let him make him wear a ring of gold. Choose silver, fulfill your desire with it, and satisfy your wishes with it.
Hadith 8006
عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ وَعَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلُهُ
Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) have also narrated a similar hadith of the Prophet.
Hadith 8007
عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ أَنَّ أَعْرَابِيًّا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَكَلَتْنَا الضَّبُعُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ غَيْرُ الضَّبُعِ عِنْدِي أَخْوَفُ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنَ الضَّبُعِ إِنَّ الدُّنْيَا سَتُصَبُّ عَلَيْكُمْ صَبًّا فَيَا لَيْتَ أُمَّتِي لَا تَلْبَسُ الذَّهَبَ
Zaid bin Wahb narrates from a man that a Bedouin came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Drought has destroyed us. The Messenger (peace be upon him) said: There is something other than this drought about which I fear for you even more, and that is that the world will be opened up for you. I wish my Ummah would not wear gold.
Hadith 8008
عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَامَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَكَلَتْنَا الضَّبُعُ يَعْنِي السَّنَةَ قَالَ غَيْرُ ذَلِكَ أَخْوَفُ لِي عَلَيْكُمُ الدُّنْيَا إِذَا صُبَّتْ عَلَيْكُمْ صَبًّا فَيَا لَيْتَ أُمَّتِي لَا يَلْبَسُونَ وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ لَا يَتَحَلَّوْنَ الذَّهَبَ
Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a Bedouin stood before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Drought has destroyed us. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I do not fear this as much as I fear another thing even more, and that is that the world will pour upon you like rain. I wish my Ummah would not wear gold.
Hadith 8009
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ مَنْ لَبِسَ الذَّهَبَ مِنْ أُمَّتِي فَمَاتَ وَهُوَ يَلْبَسُهُ حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ ذَهَبَ الْجَنَّةِ وَمَنْ لَبِسَ الْحَرِيرَ مِنْ أُمَّتِي فَمَاتَ وَهُوَ يَلْبَسُهُ حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ حَرِيرَ الْجَنَّةِ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever from my Ummah wore gold and died in that state that he used to wear it, then Allah Almighty will make the gold of Paradise forbidden for him. And whoever from my Ummah wore silk and died in that state that he used to wear it, then Allah Almighty will make the silk of Paradise forbidden for him.
Hadith 8010
عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ وَفِي لَفْظٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلَا يَلْبَسْ حَرِيرًا وَلَا ذَهَبًا قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَسَمِعْتُهُ أَنَا مِنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ مَعْرُوفٍ
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should neither wear silk nor gold.
Hadith 8011
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ فِي خُطْبَتِهِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَنْ يَلْبَسُ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا فَلَا يُكْسَاهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ وَفِي لَفْظٍ مَنْ لَبِسَ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا فَلَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) say in his sermon: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever wears silk in this world will not be made to wear it in the Hereafter. In another narration: Whoever wears silk in this world will have no share of it in the Hereafter.
Hadith 8012
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ الْحَرِيرَ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Only he wears silk who has no share in the Hereafter.
Hadith 8013
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الْدُّنْيَا مَنْ لَا يَرْجُو أَنْ يَلْبَسَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ الْحَرِيرَ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ قَالَ الْحَسَنُ فَمَا بَالُ أَقْوَامٍ يَبْلُغُهُمْ هَذَا عَنْ نَبِيِّهِمْ فَيَجْعَلُونَ حَرِيرًا فِي ثِيَابِهِمْ وَفِي بُيُوتِهِمْ
Syedna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Only he wears silk in this world who does not hope to wear it in the Hereafter; thus, only he wears silk who has no share in the Hereafter. Hasan Basri says: What will be the state of those people to whom this saying of their Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has reached, yet they still use silk in their clothing and homes.
Hadith 8014
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَيْضًا قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَتَّبَّعُ الْحَرِيرَ مِنَ الثِّيَابِ فَيَنْزِعُهُ
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would keep watch for silk garments and would have them removed.
Hadith 8015
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ لَبِسَ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الْدُّنْيَا فَلَنْ يَلْبَسَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever wears silk in this world will never wear it in the Hereafter.
Hadith 8016
عَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَاهِبًا أَهْدَى لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ جُبَّةَ سُنْدُسٍ فَلَبِسَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ أَتَى الْبَيْتَ فَوَضَعَهَا وَأَحَسَّ بِوَفْدٍ أَتَوْهُ فَأَمَرَهُ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنْ يَلْبَسَ الْجُبَّةَ لِقُدُومِ الْوَفْدِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا يَصْلُحُ لِبَاسُهَا لَنَا فِي الْدُّنْيَا وَيَصْلُحُ لَنَا فِي الْآخِرَةِ وَلَكِنْ خُذْهَا يَا عُمَرُ فَقَالَ يَكْرَهُهَا وَآخَذُهَا فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَا آمُرُكَ أَنْ تَلْبَسَهَا وَلَكِنْ أَرْسِلْ بِهَا إِلَى أَرْضِ فَارِسَ فَتُصِيبَ بِهَا مَالًا فَأَرْسَلَ بِهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى النَّجَاشِيِّ وَكَانَ قَدْ أَحْسَنَ إِلَى مَنْ فَرَّ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a monk gave the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) a fine silk cloak. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wore it, then he came home and took it off. Meanwhile, he learned that a delegation had arrived. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) advised the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to wear that same cloak upon the arrival of the delegation, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This garment is not suitable for us in this world; it will be for us in the Hereafter. But O Umar! You take it." He said: "You dislike it, and I should take it—how can that be?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am not giving it to you so that you wear it; I am giving it to you so that you send it to the region of Persia and obtain wealth in exchange for it." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent it to the Negus, because he had treated those Companions well who had migrated to him.
Hadith 8017
عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَغْرِبَ وَعَلَيْهِ فَرُّوجُ حَرِيرٍ وَهُوَ الْقَبَاءُ فَلَمَّا قَضَى صَلَاتَهُ نَزَعَهُ نَزْعًا عَنِيفًا وَقَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا لَا يَنْبَغِي لِلْمُتَّقِينَ
Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the Maghrib prayer, while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing a silk cloak with slits. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the prayer, he removed it with great severity and said: This is not befitting for the pious.
Hadith 8018
عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَيْضًا عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَمْنَعُ أَهْلَ الْحِلْيَةِ وَالْحَرِيرِ وَيَقُولُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ حِلْيَةَ الْجَنَّةِ وَحَرِيرَهَا فَلَا تَلْبَسُوهَا فِي الْدُّنْيَا
Narrated by Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) used to prohibit those with jewelry and silk from wearing these things, and used to say: If you desire the jewelry and silk of Paradise, then do not wear them in this world.
Hadith 8019
عَنْ جَوَيْرِيَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ لَبِسَ حَرِيرًا أَلْبَسَهُ اللَّهُ ثَوْبًا مِنَ النَّارِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَفِي لَفْظٍ أَلْبَسَهُ اللَّهُ ثَوْبَ مَذَلَّةٍ أَوْ ثَوْبًا مِنْ نَارٍ
Sayyida Juwayriya (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever wears silk, Allah Almighty will clothe him with the fire of Hell on the Day of Resurrection. In another narration it is stated: Allah Almighty will clothe him with a garment of fire or humiliation.
Hadith 8020
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ أُكَيْدِرَ دُومَةَ أَهْدَى إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ جُبَّةَ سُنْدُسٍ أَوْ دِيبَاجٍ شَكَّ فِيهِ سَعِيدٌ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْهَى عَنِ الْحَرِيرِ فَلَبِسَهَا فَتَعَجَّبَ النَّاسُ مِنْهَا فَقَالَ وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ لَمَنَادِيلُ سَعْدِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ فِي الْجَنَّةِ أَحْسَنُ مِنْهَا
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the chief of Duma, Ukaydir, gave the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) a fine silk or pure silk cloak. This was at a time when wearing silk had not yet been made unlawful. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wore it, and people were greatly astonished upon seeing it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Him in Whose hand is the life of Muhammad! The handkerchief of Sa’d bin Mu’adh in Paradise is better than this."
Hadith 8021
عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ أَبِي رُقَيَّةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ حَدَّثَهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مَسْلَمَةَ بْنَ مَخْلَدٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَهُوَ قَاعِدٌ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يَخْطُبُ النَّاسَ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَمَا لَكُمْ فِي الْعَصَبِ وَالْكَتَّانِ مَا يَكْفِيكُمْ عَنِ الْحَرِيرِ وَهَذَا رَجُلٌ فِيكُمْ يُخْبِرُكُمْ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قُمْ يَا عُقْبَةُ فَقَامَ عُقْبَةُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَنْ كَذَبَ عَلَيَّ مُتَعَمِّدًا فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنِّي سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ مَنْ لَبِسَ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا حُرِمَهُ أَنْ يَلْبَسَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ
Hisham bin Abu Ruqayyah says: I heard from Muslamah bin Makhlad while he was delivering a sermon to the people from the pulpit. He said: O people! Do you not have Yemeni sheets and linen clothes? Are they not sufficient instead of silk? There is a man among you who will inform you of the command of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, regarding this matter. O Uqbah! Stand up. Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir, may Allah be pleased with him, stood up and said: The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever deliberately attributes a lie to me, let him take his seat in the Hellfire. And I bear witness that I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say: Whoever wears silk in this world will be deprived of it in the Hereafter.
Hadith 8022
عَنْ أَبِي يُونُسَ حَاتِمِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ يَقُولُ رَأَيْتُ امْرَأَةً جَاءَتْ إِلَى ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا بِمِنًى عَلَيْهَا دِرْعُ حَرِيرٍ فَقَالَتْ مَا تَقُولُ فِي الْحَرِيرِ فَقَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْهُ
Abu Yunus Hatim bin Muslim says: I heard from a man of the Quraysh, he said: I saw a woman, she came to Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) at Mina, she was wearing a silk shirt, she said: What do you say about silk? He said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade it.
Hadith 8023
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ كُنَّا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَادِيَةِ عَلَيْهِ جُبَّةُ سِيجَانَ مَزْرُورَةٌ بِالدِّيبَاجِ فَقَالَ أَلَا إِنَّ صَاحِبَكُمْ هَذَا قَدْ وَضَعَ كُلَّ فَارِسِ ابْنِ فَارِسٍ قَالَ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَضَعَ كُلَّ فَارِسِ ابْنِ فَارِسٍ وَيَرْفَعَ كُلَّ رَاعِ ابْنِ رَاعٍ قَالَ فَأَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِمَجَامِعِ جُبَّتِهِ وَقَالَ أَلَا أَرَى عَلَيْكَ لِبَاسَ مَنْ لَا يَعْقِلُ ثُمَّ قَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ نُوحًا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمَّا حَضَرَتْهُ الْوَفَاةُ قَالَ لِابْنِهِ إِنِّي قَاصٌّ عَلَيْكَ الْوَصِيَّةَ آمُرُكَ بِاثْنَتَيْنِ وَأَنْهَاكَ عَنْ اثْنَتَيْنِ آمُرُكَ بِلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ فَإِنَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعَ وَالْأَرَضِينَ السَّبْعَ لَوْ وُضِعَتْ فِي كِفَّةٍ وَوُضِعَتْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ فِي كِفَّةٍ رَجَحَتْ بِهِنَّ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَلَوْ أَنَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعَ وَالْأَرَضِينَ السَّبْعَ كُنَّ حَلْقَةً مُبْهَمَةً إِلَّا قَصَمَتْهُنَّ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ فَإِنَّهَا صَلَاةُ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَبِهَا يُرْزَقُ الْخَلْقُ وَأَنْهَاكَ عَنِ الشِّرْكِ وَالْكِبْرِ قَالَ قُلْتُ أَوْ قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَذَا الشِّرْكُ قَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَمَا الْكِبْرُ قَالَ أَنْ يَكُونَ لِأَحَدٍ نَعْلَانِ حَسَنَتَانِ لَهُمَا شِرَاكَانِ حَسَنَانِ قَالَ لَا قَالَ هُوَ أَنْ يَكُونَ لِأَحَدِنَا أَصْحَابٌ يَجْلِسُونَ إِلَيْهِ قَالَ لَا قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَمَا الْكِبْرُ قَالَ سَفَهُ الْحَقِّ وَغَمْصُ النَّاسِ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: We were present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a resident of a town came wearing a cloak of Sayjan, whose buttons were of silk, and said: Beware! This companion of yours (Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him) has lowered the status of horsemen and elevated the honor of shepherds. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) grabbed him by the collar of his cloak and said: Do I not see upon you the clothing of those who are foolish? Then he said: When the time of death for Allah’s Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) approached, he said to his son: I am going to state a will before you; I command you with two things and forbid you from two things. I command you with La ilaha illallah, for if the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed on one side of the scale and La ilaha illallah on the other, La ilaha illallah would outweigh them. And if the seven heavens and the seven earths were to become a closed ring, La ilaha illallah would break it. And (the second thing) is Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi; these words are the prayer of everything, and through them the creation is provided sustenance. And I forbid you from shirk (associating partners with Allah) and arrogance. I or someone else said: O Messenger of Allah! We recognize shirk, but what is arrogance? Is arrogance that a man’s shoes and their straps are good? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No. Someone said: Then is arrogance that a man has friends who sit with him? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No. Then someone said: O Messenger of Allah! Then what is arrogance? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: To reject the truth and to look down upon people (that is arrogance).
Hadith 8024
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ بِجُبَّةِ سُنْدُسٍ قَالَ فَلَقِيَ عُمَرُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ بَعَثْتَ إِلَيَّ بِجُبَّةِ سُنْدُسٍ وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ إِنِّي لَمْ أَبْعَثْ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَلْبَسَهَا إِنَّمَا بَعَثْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَبِيعَهَا أَوْ تَسْتَنْفِعَ بِهَا
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a silk cloak to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) met the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: You have sent a silk cloak to me, even though you had said such and such about it (i.e., you had condemned it)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I did not send it to you so that you would wear it; I sent it so that you could sell it or derive some other benefit from it.
Hadith 8025
عَنْ ضَمْرَةَ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعَلَيْهِ حُلَّتَانِ مِنْ حُلَلِ الْيَمَنِ فَقَالَ يَا ضَمْرَةُ أَتَرَى ثَوْبَيْكَ هَذَيْنِ مُدْخِلَيْكَ الْجَنَّةَ فَقَالَ لَئِنِ اسْتَغْفَرْتَ لِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَا أَقْعُدُ حَتَّى أَنْزَعَهُمَا عَنِّي فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِضَمْرَةَ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ فَانْطَلَقَ سَرِيعًا حَتَّى نَزَعَهُمَا عَنْهُ
Sayyiduna Zumrah bin Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wearing two Yemeni garments. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Zumrah! Do you think these two garments will admit you into Paradise? I said: O Messenger of Allah! If you seek forgiveness for me, I will take them off before sitting down. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Allah! Forgive Zumrah bin Tha'labah. So he hurriedly went and took both of them off.
Hadith 8026
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَاصِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَخْبَرَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ التَّيْمِيُّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي الْحَسَنُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ بِحَدِيثِ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فِي الدِّيبَاجِ قَالَ فَقَالَ الْحَسَنُ أَخْبَرَنِي رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْحَيِّ أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعَلَيْهِ جُبَّةٌ لَبِنَتُهَا دِيبَاجٌ قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَبِنَةٌ مِنْ نَارٍ
Sulaiman Taimi says: Hasan Basri narrated to me the hadith of Abu Uthman Nahdi, who narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding silk. Hasan says: A man from the tribe informed me that he entered upon the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), while he was wearing a cloak whose collar was made of silk. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This collar is of fire.
Hadith 8027
عَنْ حَفْصَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّ عُطَارِدَ بْنَ حَاجِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَدِمَ مَعَهُ ثَوْبُ دِيبَاجٍ كَسَاهُ إِيَّاهُ كِسْرَى فَقَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُهُ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ
Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that ‘Atard bin Hajib came and he had a silk cloak with him, which the ruler of Persia had given him. Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! I wish that you would buy it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: This is a garment worn by the one who has no share in the Hereafter.
Hadith 8028
عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ الرَّحَبِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ أَبَا أُمَامَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ دَخَلَ عَلَى خَالِدِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَأَلْقَى لَهُ وَسَادَةً فَظَنَّ أَبُو أُمَامَةَ أَنَّهَا حَرِيرٌ فَتَنَحَّى يَمْشِي الْقَهْقَرَى حَتَّى بَلَغَ آخِرَ السِّمَاطِ وَخَالِدٌ يُكَلِّمُ رَجُلًا ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ إِلَى أَبِي أُمَامَةَ فَقَالَ لَهُ يَا أَخِي مَا ظَنَنْتَ أَظَنَنْتَ أَنَّهَا حَرِيرٌ قَالَ أَبُو أُمَامَةَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا يَسْتَمْتِعُ بِالْحَرِيرِ مَنْ يَرْجُو أَيَّامَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ خَالِدٌ يَا أَبَا أُمَامَةَ أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ غُفْرًا أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَلْ كُنَّا فِي قَوْمٍ مَا كَذَبُونَا وَلَا كُذِّبْنَا
Habib bin Ubaid al-Habi says: Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Khalid bin Yazid. He placed a cushion for him. Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) thought that it was made of silk, so he withdrew his feet and separated himself from it, until he reached the end of the gathering, while Khalid was talking to another man. Then, when Khalid turned towards Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said to him: O my brother! What did you think? Do you think this is made of silk? So Khalid removed the doubt. Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever hopes for the blessings of Allah, let him not benefit from silk. Khalid said to Abu Umamah: Did you hear this hadith from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: O Allah! Forgive me, Khalid is asking me whether I heard this hadith from the Messenger of Allah. We were among such people that whatever they narrated to us, they did not lie in it, nor were we ever denied.
