Hadith 7943
حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ عَنْ أَبِي شَيْخٍ الْهُنَائِيِّ قَالَ كُنْتُ فِي مَلَإٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عِنْدَ مُعَاوِيَةَ فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ أَنْشُدُكُمُ اللَّهَ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ قَالُوا اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ وَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ قَالَ أَنْشُدُكُمُ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْ لُبْسِ الذَّهَبِ إِلَّا مُقَطَّعًا قَالُوا اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ وَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ قَالَ أَنْشُدُكُمُ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْ رُكُوبِ النُّمُورِ قَالُوا اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ وَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ قَالَ أَنْشُدُكُمُ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنِ الشُّرْبِ فِي آنِيَةِ الْفِضَّةِ قَالُوا اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ وَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ قَالَ أَنْشُدُكُمُ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْ جَمْعٍ بَيْنَ حَجٍّ وَعُمْرَةٍ قَالُوا أَمَّا هَذَا فَلَا قَالَ أَمَّا إِنَّهَا مَعَهُنَّ
Abu Sheikh Hanai says: I went to Sayyiduna Amir Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), while a group of the noble Companions was present with him. Sayyiduna Amir Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I ask you by Allah, do you know that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade wearing silk? They said: Yes. He said: I also bear witness. Then he said: I ask you by Allah, do you know that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade wearing gold, except that a little may be used? The Companions said: Yes. He said: I also bear witness. Then he said: I ask you by Allah, do you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade spreading the skins of leopards? The Companions said: Yes. He said: I also bear witness. Then he said: I ask you by Allah, do you know that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade drinking water from silver vessels? They said: Yes. He said: I also bear witness. Then he said: I ask you by Allah, do you know that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade combining Hajj and Umrah? The Companions said: No, there is no such thing. But he said: Beware, this is also among them.
Hadith 7944
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ ثَقِيفٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ فَلَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَاحِدِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا مُجِيبٍ قَالَ لَقِيَ أَبُو ذَرٍّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا وَجَعَلَ أُرَاهُ قَبِيعَةَ سَيْفِهِ فِضَّةً فَنَهَاهُ وَقَالَ أَبُو ذَرٍّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا مِنْ إِنْسَانٍ أَوْ قَالَ أَحَدٍ تَرَكَ صَفْرَاءَ أَوْ بَيْضَاءَ إِلَّا كُوِيَ بِهَا
Abu Mujib says that Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) met Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) had made the hilt of his sword from silver. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) stopped him and said that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever leaves behind silver or gold, he will be branded with it.
Hadith 7945
عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ نَهَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ ثَلَاثَةٍ نَهَانِي عَنِ الْقَسِّيِّ وَالْمِيثَرَةِ وَأَنْ أَقْرَأَ وَأَنَا رَاكِعٌ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) forbade me from three things: from wearing silk clothing, from silk cushions, and from reciting the Noble Qur’an during bowing (ruku’).
Hadith 7946
عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ نَهَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ لِبَاسِ الْقَسِّيِّ وَالْمَيَاثِرِ وَالْمُعَصْفَرِ وَعَنْ قِرَاءَةِ الْقُرْآنِ وَالرَّجُلُ رَاكِعٌ أَوْ سَاجِدٌ
. (Second chain) Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) forbade me from (wearing) silk clothing, silk cushions, dyed (with safflower) clothes, and from reciting the Noble Qur'an while a person is in the state of bowing (ruku') or prostration (sujud).
Hadith 7947
عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ نَهَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْمِيثَرَةِ وَعَنِ الْقَسِّيَّةِ قُلْنَا لَهُ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَأَيُّ شَيْءٍ الْمِيثَرَةُ قَالَ شَيْءٌ تَصْنَعُهُ النِّسَاءُ لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ عَلَى رِحَالِهِنَّ قَالَ قُلْنَا وَمَا الْقَسِّيَّةُ قَالَ ثِيَابٌ تَأْتِينَا مِنْ قِبَلِ الشَّامِ مُضَلَّعَةٌ فِيهَا أَمْثَالُ الْأُتْرُجِّ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو بُرْدَةَ فَلَمَّا رَأَيْتُ السَّبَنِيَّ عَرَفْتُ أَنَّهَا هِيَ
Syedna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me from (using) Maitharah and Qassi. The people asked: O Commander of the Faithful! What is Maitharah? He said: These are (silk cushions) which women make in their homes for their husbands. We asked: What is Qassi? He said: This is a flowery (silk) cloth brought to us from the direction of Syria, in which patterns like oranges were made. Abu Burdah says: When I saw the cloth made in the Sabn region, I realized that these are the same.
Hadith 7948
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْمِيثَرَةِ وَالْقَسِّيَّةِ وَحَلْقَةِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْمُفْدَمِ قَالَ يَزِيدُ وَالْمِيثَرَةُ جُلُودُ السِّبَاعِ وَالْقَسِّيَّةُ ثِيَابٌ مُضَلَّعَةٌ مِنْ إِبْرَيْسَمٍ يُجَاءُ بِهَا مِنْ مِصْرَ وَالْمُفْدَمُ الْمُشَبَّعُ بِالْعُصْفُرِ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade silk cushions, silk clothing, gold rings, and extremely red garments. Yazid, the narrator, says: "Maisarah" refers to the skins of wild animals, "Qassi" is a fine, flower-patterned garment made of silk that is brought from Egypt, and a garment dyed deeply with the 'Usfur plant is called "Mufdam."
Hadith 7949
عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا عَنْ مِيثَرَةِ الْأُرْجُوَانِ فَقَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا أَرْكَبُهَا وَلَا أَلْبَسُ قَمِيصًا مَكْفُوفًا بِحَرِيرٍ وَلَا أَلْبَسُ الْقَسِّيَّ
Abu Zubair says: I asked Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) about red silk cushions. He said that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I neither ride using such cushions, nor do I wear a shirt whose edges are of silk, nor will I wear silk clothing.
Hadith 7950
عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ نُهِيَ عَنْ مَيَاثِرِ الْأُرْجُوَانِ وَلُبْسِ الْقَسِّيِّ وَخَاتَمِ الذَّهَبِ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِأَخِي يَحْيَى بْنِ سِيرِينَ فَقَالَ أَوَلَمْ تَسْمَعْ هَذَا نَعَمْ وَكِفَافِ الدِّيبَاجِ
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the use of red silk cushions, wearing silk clothes, and wearing a gold ring have been prohibited. Muhammad bin Sirin says: When I mentioned this to my brother Yahya bin Sirin, he said: Have you not heard this? Yes, and wearing a garment with silk borders is also prohibited.
Hadith 7951
عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ قَاعِدًا عِنْدَ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ فَجَاءَ صَعْصَعَةُ بْنُ صُوحَانَ فَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَقَالَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ انْهَنَا عَمَّا نَهَاكَ عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ نَهَانَا عَنِ الدُّبَّاءِ وَالْحَنْتَمِ وَالْمُزَفَّتِ وَالنَّقِيرِ وَنَهَانَا عَنِ الْقَسِّيِّ وَالْمِيثَرَةِ الْحَمْرَاءِ وَعَنِ الْحَرِيرِ وَالْحَلَقِ الذَّهَبِ ثُمَّ قَالَ كَسَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حُلَّةً مِنْ حَرِيرٍ فَخَرَجْتُ فِيهَا لِيَرَى النَّاسُ عَلَيَّ كِسْوَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ فَرَآنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَمَرَنِي بِنَزْعِهِمَا فَأَرْسَلَ بِإِحْدَاهُمَا إِلَى فَاطِمَةَ وَشَقَّ الْأُخْرَى بَيْنَ نِسَائِهِ
Malik bin Umair says: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when Sa’sa’ah bin Sawhan came to him, greeted him with salam, and then stood up and said: O Commander of the Faithful! For whatever the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade you, forbid us from it as well. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from using gourds as vessels, green jugs, tar-coated vessels, and wooden vessels made by hollowing out date-palm trunks. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from silk clothing, red silk cushions, silk, gold rings, and signet rings. Sayyiduna Ali said: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me a suit of silk; I wore it and went outside so that people could see the garment the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had given me, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me and ordered me to take it off. Then he sent one part of it to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) and distributed the other part among his other women.
Hadith 7952
عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ نَهَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ خَوَاتِيمِ الذَّهَبِ وَآنِيَةِ الْفِضَّةِ وَالْحَرِيرِ وَالدِّيبَاجِ وَالْإِسْتَبْرَقِ وَالْمَيَاثِرِ الْحُمْرِ وَالْقَسِّيِّ
Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from (wearing) gold rings, (using) silver utensils, silk, dibaj and istabraq (types of silk), red silk cushions, and qassi (striped silk fabric).
Hadith 7953
عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ نَهَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا أَقُولُ نَهَاكُمْ عَنْ تَخَتُّمِ الذَّهَبِ وَعَنْ لُبْسِ الْقَسِّيِّ وَالْمُعَصْفَرِ وَقِرَاءَةِ الْقُرْآنِ وَأَنَا رَاكِعٌ وَكَسَانِي حُلَّةً مِنْ سِيَرَاءَ فَخَرَجْتُ فِيهَا فَقَالَ يَا عَلِيُّ إِنِّي لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا قَالَ فَرَجَعْتُ بِهَا إِلَى فَاطِمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَأَعْطَيْتُهَا نَاحِيَتَهَا فَأَخَذَتْ بِهَا لِتَطْوِيَهَا مَعِي فَشَقَقْتُهَا بِثِنْتَيْنِ قَالَ فَقَالَتْ تَرِبَتْ يَدَاكَ يَا ابْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ مَاذَا صَنَعْتَ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ لَهَا نَهَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ لُبْسِهَا فَالْبَسِي وَاكْسِي نِسَاءَكِ
Sayyiduna Ali bin Abu Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me—I do not say that he forbade you—he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me from wearing a gold ring, from silk clothing, from dyed (with safflower) clothing, and from reciting the Qur’an while in the state of bowing (ruku’). Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me a striped silk garment. When I went out wearing it, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “O Ali! I did not give it to you to wear.” I went to Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) and tore the garment into two pieces. Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “O son of Abu Talib! What have you done?” I said: “The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me from wearing it. You wear it, and let other women wear it as well.”
Hadith 7954
عَنْ أَبِي الْمَلِيحِ بْنِ أُسَامَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْ جُلُودِ السِّبَاعِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Usama bin Umair (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) forbade (the use of) the skins of predatory animals.
Hadith 7955
عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ نَهَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ خَاتَمِ الذَّهَبِ وَعَنِ الْمِيثَرَةِ وَعَنِ الْقَسِّيِّ وَعَنِ الْجِعَةِ
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me from (wearing) a gold ring, silk cushion, silk clothing, and barley nabidh.
Hadith 7956
عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ وَالدِّيبَاجِ وَآنِيَةِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ وَقَالَ هُوَ لَهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَلَنَا فِي الْآخِرَةِ
Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade common silk, brocade, and vessels of gold and silver, and said: These are for the disbelievers in this world and for us in the Hereafter.
Hadith 7957
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ نَهَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ خَمْسٍ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ وَالذَّهَبِ وَالشُّرْبِ فِي آنِيَةِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ وَالْمِيثَرَةِ الْحَمْرَاءِ وَلُبْسِ الْقَسِّيِّ فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ شَيْءٌ رَقِيقٌ مِنْ الذَّهَبِ يُرْبَطُ بِهِ الْمِسْكُ أَوْ يُرْبَطُ بِهِ قَالَ لَا اجْعَلِيهِ فِضَّةً وَصَفِّرِيهِ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ زَعْفَرَانٍ
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from five things: wearing silk and gold, drinking from gold and silver vessels, using red silk cushions, and wearing silk garments. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah! Is even a thin gold chain, with which a bracelet is fastened, not permissible? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, make it from silver or color it yellow with saffron.
