Chapter on What Has Been Reported Regarding Red
Hadith 7939
عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَطَاءٍ أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ بَنِي حَارِثَةَ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ رَافِعَ بْنَ خَدِيجٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ حَدَّثَهُمْ أَنَّهُمْ خَرَجُوا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي سَفَرٍ قَالَ فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِلْغَدَاءِ قَالَ عَلَّقَ كُلُّ رَجُلٍ بِخِطَامِ نَاقَتِهِ ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَهَا تَهُزُّ فِي الشَّجَرِ قَالَ ثُمَّ جَلَسْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ وَرِحَالُنَا عَلَى أَبَاعِرِنَا قَالَ فَرَفَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَأْسَهُ فَرَأَى أَكْسِيَةً لَنَا فِيهَا خُيُوطٌ مِنْ عِهْنٍ أَحْمَرَ قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَلَا أَرَى هَذِهِ الْحُمْرَةَ قَدْ عَلَتْكُمْ قَالَ فَقُمْنَا سِرَاعًا لِقَوْلِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى نَفَرَ بَعْضُ إِبِلِنَا فَأَخَذْنَا الْأَكْسِيَةَ فَنَزَعْنَاهَا مِنْهَا
Sayyiduna Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we went on a journey with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped at a place for breakfast; every man hung the camel’s halter and let it go, and the camels began to roam among the trees. Then we sat with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and our saddlebags were still on our camels. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head and saw that there were cloaks with red woolen threads on them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do I not see that redness has become dominant over you?” We stood up so quickly to act upon the command of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that some camels even became startled because of it. We removed all the cloaks that were placed on them.
Hadith 7940
عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ رَافِعِ بْنِ خَدِيجٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَأَى حُمْرَةً قَدْ ظَهَرَتْ فَكَرِهَهَا فَلَمَّا مَاتَ رَافِعُ بْنُ خَدِيجٍ جَعَلُوا عَلَى سَرِيرِهِ قَطِيفَةً حَمْرَاءَ فَعَجِبَ النَّاسُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ
Sayyiduna Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) expressed dislike upon seeing red-colored sheets prominently. When Sayyiduna Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, people spread a red sheet on his bier, which greatly surprised the people.
Hadith 7941
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْبَرَاءَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ مَا رَأَيْتُ أَحَدًا مِنْ خَلْقِ اللَّهِ أَحْسَنَ فِي حُلَّةٍ حَمْرَاءَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَإِنَّ جُمَّتَهُ لَتَضْرِبُ إِلَى مَنْكِبَيْهِ قَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ لَتَضْرِبُ قَرِيبًا مِنْ مَنْكِبَيْهِ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُهُ يُحَدِّثُ بِهِ مِرَارًا مَا حَدَّثَ بِهِ قَطُّ إِلَّا ضَحِكَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: Among Allah’s creation, I have not seen anyone more handsome than the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing a red garment and the hair of his head was touching his shoulders. The narrator Ibn Abi Bukair said: The hair of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) head was reaching close to his shoulders. I have heard Isra’il many times; whenever he narrated this hadith, he would smile.
Hadith 7942
عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ نَهَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ خَاتَمِ الذَّهَبِ وَعَنْ لَبْسِ الْحُمْرَةِ وَعَنِ الْقِرَاءَةِ فِي الرُّكُوعِ وَالسُّجُودِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me from wearing a gold ring, wearing red-colored clothing, and reciting the Holy Qur’an during bowing (ruku) and prostration (sajdah).
