Hadith 7747

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunaif (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) set out to return towards Makkah, I was also with him (peace and blessings be upon him). When we reached the Kharar valley near Juhfa, Sahl bin Hunaif took a bath. He was fair-skinned and had a handsome body, and his skin was also very good. Sayyiduna Amir bin Rabi’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Banu ‘Adi bin Ka’b tribe saw him bathing and said: “I have never seen a body as beautiful as this; even a veiled maiden does not have such a body.” Sahl immediately fell unconscious and collapsed there. He was brought to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it was said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): “O Messenger of Allah! Please do something for Sahl. By Allah! He neither raises his head nor regains consciousness.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do you accuse anyone of casting an evil eye on him?” They said: “Sayyiduna Amir bin Rabi’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) had seen him.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Amir bin Rabi’ah (may Allah be pleased with him), was very displeased with him, and said: “Why do you not refrain from killing your brother? When you saw him and he pleased you, why did you not pray for blessing for him?” Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) to perform ablution. He washed his face, hands, elbows, knees, toes, and the inner part of his lower garment, and collected the water in a bowl. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered a man to pour this water over Sahl’s head and back, and then to pour the remaining water from behind. He did so, and Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) began walking with the people as if he had never suffered any ailment.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amir narrates that Sayyiduna Amir bin Rabi’ah and Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunaif (may Allah be pleased with them both) both wanted to bathe, so they both went out in search of some cover. Sayyiduna Sahl took off his woolen cloak. Sayyiduna Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When I saw him, the evil eye from me affected him. When he entered the water to bathe, I heard the sound of him thrashing in the water. I came to him and called out to him three times, but he did not respond. I informed the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) about this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came walking and entered the water. It is as if I can still see the whiteness of his shins. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his hand on the chest of Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: “O Allah! Remove from him its heat, its cold, and its fatigue.” After this, Sahl stood up. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When any of you sees something pleasing in his brother, or in himself, or in his wealth, let him pray for blessing for it, for the evil eye is indeed a reality.”

Sayyiduna Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray, he would quietly say some words; neither could I understand them nor did he (peace and blessings be upon him) tell us. (One day) he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Did you notice that I say some words? We said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I remembered a prophet to whom many armies from his people were given; he, boasting to his people, said: Who is there who can match them? Or who is there who can face them? Or he said something similar. Allah Almighty revealed to him: Choose one of these three matters for your people: We will impose their enemy upon your nation, or hunger, or death. He consulted his people. They said: You are Allah’s prophet, the matter is entrusted to you, so you choose yourself. He began to pray; whenever they were distressed, they would resort to prayer. He prayed as much as Allah Almighty willed, then said: O my Lord, do not impose their enemy upon them, nor hunger; let it be death. Allah Almighty imposed death upon them; in one day, seventy thousand of them died. This was my humming, as you saw; I said: Allahumma bika uqatilu, wa bika usawilu, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah. (O Allah! I fight by Your help, and I attack by Your help; there is no power and no strength except with Allah.)
