بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي الْحُمَّى وَعَلاجها
Chapter on What Has Been Reported Regarding Fever and Its Treatment
Hadith 7633
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْحُمَّى مِنْ فَيْحِ جَهَنَّمَ فَأَبْرِدُوهَا بِالْمَاءِ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Fever is from the heat of Hell, so cool it with water.
Hadith 7634
(وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أَحْسَسْتُمْ بِالْحُمَّى فَأَطْفِئُوهَا بِالْمَاءِ الْبَارِدِ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you feel fever, eliminate its effect with cold water.
Hadith 7635
عَنْ رَافِعِ بْنِ خَدِيجٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ الْحُمَّى فَوْرُ جَهَنَّمَ (وَفِي لَفْظٍ مِنْ فَوْرِ جَهَنَّمَ) فَأَبْرِدُوهَا بِالْمَاءِ
Sayyiduna Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Fever is the boiling of Hell, so remove its effect with water.
Hadith 7636
وَعَنْ أَبِي بَشِيرٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِمِثْلِهِ
Sayyiduna Abu Basheer Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) something similar to this.
Hadith 7637
عَنْ أَبِي جَمْرَةَ قَالَ كُنْتُ أَدْفَعُ النَّاسَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا فَاحْتَبَسْتُ أَيَّامًا فَقَالَ مَا حَبَسَكَ قُلْتُ الْحُمَّى قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّ الْحُمَّى مِنْ فَيْحِ جَهَنَّمَ فَأَبْرِدُوهَا بِمَاءِ زَمْزَمَ
Abu Hamzah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: I used to keep people away from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). Once, I could not go for a few days. Later, when I went, he said: What kept you from coming to me? I said: I was afflicted with fever. He said: Indeed, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Fever is from the steam of Hellfire, so cool it with the water of Zamzam.
Hadith 7638
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ الْحُمَّى أَوْ شِدَّةَ الْحُمَّى مِنْ فَيْحِ جَهَنَّمَ فَأَبْرِدُوهَا بِالْمَاءِ
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The severity of fever is from the steam of Hell, so cool it with water."
Hadith 7639
عَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ اسْتَأْذَنَتِ الْحُمَّى عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ مَنْ هَذِهِ قَالَتْ أُمُّ مِلْدَمٍ قَالَ فَأَمَرَ بِهَا إِلَى أَهْلِ قُبَاءَ فَلَقُوا مِنْهَا مَا يَعْلَمُ اللَّهُ فَأَتَوْهُ فَشَكَوْا ذَلِكَ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ مَا شِئْتُمْ إِنْ شِئْتُمْ أَنْ أَدْعُوَ اللَّهَ لَكُمْ فَيَكْشِفَهَا عَنْكُمْ وَإِنْ شِئْتُمْ أَنْ تَكُونَ لَكُمْ طَهُورًا قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَوَتَفْعَلُ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالُوا فَدَعْهَا
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that fever sought permission from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He asked: Who is this? Fever replied: I am Umm-e-Mildam. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered it to go to the people of Quba. Then only Allah knows what hardship befell them because of it. They complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: What do you want? If you wish, I will supplicate to Allah Almighty for you, and He will remove it from you. And if you wish, let it be a means of purification from your sins (then do so). They said: O Messenger of Allah! Does it really cleanse sins? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Yes. They said: Then let it remain here.
Hadith 7640
عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّهَا كَانَتْ إِذَا أُتِيَتْ بِالْمَرْأَةِ لِتَدْعُوَ لَهَا صَبَّتِ الْمَاءَ بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَ جَيْبِهَا وَقَالَتْ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَنَا أَنْ نُبَرِّدَهَا بِالْمَاءِ وَقَالَ إِنَّهَا مِنْ فَيْحِ جَهَنَّمَ
It is narrated from Sayyida Asma’ (may Allah be pleased with her) that when a woman was brought to her so that she might supplicate for relief from fever, she would pour water into the woman’s garment and would say that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to cool fever with water, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Verily, it is from the steam of Hell.
Hadith 7641
عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ الْحُمَّى مِنْ كِيرِ جَهَنَّمَ فَمَا أَصَابَ الْمُؤْمِنَ مِنْهَا كَانَ حَظَّهُ مِنَ النَّارِ
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Fever is from the furnace of Hell; the amount of fever a believer experiences will be the same amount less for him from the fire, meaning that much reduction for him in the fire of Hell.
Hadith 7642
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُعَلِّمُنَا مِنَ الْحُمَّى وَالْأَوْجَاعِ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الْكَبِيرِ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ شَرِّ عِرْقٍ نَعَّارٍ وَمِنْ شَرِّ حَرِّ النَّارِ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to instruct us to recite this supplication for fever and other bodily pains: BISMILLAHIL KABEER, A’UDHU BILLAAHI MIN SHARRI ‘IRQIN NA’AAR, WA MIN SHARRI HARRIN NAAR (In the name of Allah, the Most Great, I seek refuge with Allah from the evil of the gushing vein and from the evil of the heat of the Fire).
Hadith 7643
عَنْ ثَوْبَانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِذَا أَصَابَ أَحَدَكُمُ الْحُمَّى وَإِنَّ الْحُمَّى قِطْعَةٌ مِنَ النَّارِ فَلْيُطْفِئْهَا عَنْهُ بِالْمَاءِ الْبَارِدِ وَلْيَسْتَقْبِلْ نَهَرًا جَارِيًا يَسْتَقْبِلُ جَرْيَةَ الْمَاءِ فَيَقُولُ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ اللَّهُمَّ اشْفِ عَبْدَكَ وَصَدِّقْ رَسُولَكَ بَعْدَ صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ فَيَغْتَمِسُ فِيهِ ثَلَاثَ غَمَسَاتٍ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَبْرَأْ فِي ثَلَاثٍ فَخَمْسٍ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَبْرَأْ فِي خَمْسٍ فَسَبْعٍ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَبْرَأْ فِي سَبْعٍ فَتِسْعٍ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَكَادُ يُجَاوِزُ التِّسْعَ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ
Mawla-e-Rasool Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any of you has a fever, he should cool it with cold water, for it is a piece of the fire of Hell. He should go to a running stream and face the direction of the water’s flow and recite: BISMILLAH ALLAHUMMA ISHFI ABDIKA WA SADIQ RASULAK. (In the name of Allah, O Allah! Cure Your servant and confirm Your Messenger.) After the Fajr prayer and before sunrise, he should bathe in this way and immerse himself three times, and repeat this action for three days. If he is not cured, then do this for five days, and if not cured in five days, then do this for seven days, and if still not cured, then do this for nine days. By Allah’s command, the fever will not last beyond nine days.
Hadith 7644
عَنْ أُمِّ طَارِقٍ مَوْلَاةِ سَعْدٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَتْ جَاءَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى سَعْدٍ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ فَسَكَتَ سَعْدٌ ثُمَّ أَعَادَ فَسَكَتَ سَعْدٌ ثُمَّ عَادَ فَسَكَتَ سَعْدٌ فَانْصَرَفَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَتْ فَأَرْسَلَنِي إِلَيْهِ سَعْدٌ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَمْنَعْنَا أَنْ نَأْذَنَ لَكَ إِلَّا أَنَّا أَرَدْنَا أَنْ تَزِيدَنَا قَالَتْ فَسَمِعْتُ صَوْتًا عَلَى الْبَابِ يَسْتَأْذِنُ وَلَا أَرَى شَيْئًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ أَنْتِ قَالَتْ أُمُّ مِلْدَمٍ قَالَ لَا مَرْحَبًا بِكِ وَلَا أَهْلًا أَتَهْدِينَ إِلَى أَهْلِ قُبَاءَ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَاذْهَبِي إِلَيْهِمْ
Lady Umm Tariq (may Allah be pleased with her), the freed slave woman of Sayyiduna Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) and sought permission to enter. Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) remained silent. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sought permission again, but he remained silent again. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then turned back and left. Umm Tariq says: Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) sent me to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to say that we did not grant you permission only because we wished that you would continue to bless us with the greetings of peace. I heard a voice at the door of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that someone was seeking permission, but I was not looking at him. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Who are you? She said: I am Umm Mildam. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There is no welcome for you, there is no greeting for you. Why do you not go to the people of Quba’? She said: Alright. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then go to them.
