بَابُ الرُّحْصَةِ فِي ذَلِكَ
Chapter on the Permission Regarding That
Hadith 7459
عَنْ زَاذَانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ شَرِبَ قَائِمًا فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ النَّاسُ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَنْكَرُوهُ وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ فَأَنْكَرُوا ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ مَا تَنْظُرُونَ إِنْ أَشْرَبْ قَائِمًا فَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَشْرَبُ قَائِمًا وَإِنْ أَشْرَبْ قَاعِدًا فَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَشْرَبُ قَاعِدًا
Zadhan narrates that Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, drank water while standing. The people looked at him with astonishment. He said: What are you looking at? If I drink while standing, then I have seen the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, drink while standing, and if I drink while sitting, then I have seen the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, drink while sitting.
Hadith 7460
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ شَرِبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَائِمًا وَقَاعِدًا وَمَشَى حَافِيًا وَنَاعِلًا وَانْصَرَفَ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ شِمَالِهِ
Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drank water both while standing and sitting. He (peace and blessings be upon him) would walk barefoot as well as with shoes on, and after finishing the prayer, sometimes he would turn to the right side and sometimes to the left side.
Hadith 7461
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَرِبَ مِنْ زَمْزَمَ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ وَفِي لَفْظٍ شَرِبَ مِنْ دَلْوٍ مِنْ زَمْزَمَ قَائِمًا
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) drank Zamzam water while standing, and in another narration: He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) drank Zamzam water from a bucket while standing.
Hadith 7462
وَمِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا حَدَّثَهُ قَالَ سَقَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ زَمْزَمَ فَشَرِبَ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ
(Second chain) Imam Sha'bi says that it is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), he says: I gave Zamzam water to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was standing.
Hadith 7463
عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ عَطَارِدٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ وَكِيعٌ السَّدُوسِيُّ أَبُو الْبَزَرِيِّ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا عَنِ الشُّرْبِ قَائِمًا فَقَالَ قَدْ كُنَّا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَشْرَبُ قِيَامًا وَنَأْكُلُ وَنَحْنُ نَسْعَى
Abu Bazri Waki’ Sadoosi narrates, he says: I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about drinking water while standing. He said: In the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to drink while standing and also eat while walking.
Hadith 7464
عَنِ الصَّلْتِ بْنِ غَالِبٍ الْهُجَيْمِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ سَأَلَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ الشُّرْبِ قَائِمًا قَالَ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَقَلَ رَاحِلَتَهُ وَهِيَ مُنَاخَةٌ وَأَنَا آخِذٌ بِخِطَامِهَا أَوْ زِمَامِهَا وَاضِعًا رِجْلِي عَلَى يَدِهَا فَجَاءَ نَفَرٌ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ فَقَامُوا حَوْلَهُ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِإِنَاءٍ مِنْ لَبَنٍ فَشَرِبَ وَهُوَ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَ الَّذِي يَلِيهِ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ فَشَرِبَ قَائِمًا حَتَّى شَرِبَ الْقَوْمُ كُلُّهُمْ قِيَامًا
Muslim (the Tabi'i) asked Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, whether it is permissible to drink water while standing. He replied: O nephew! I saw the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, tie the knee of his mount and make it sit down, and I was holding the reins of that mount, and I had placed my foot on the front leg of the mount. Some people from the Quraysh came and gathered around the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. A vessel of milk was brought to the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he drank it while he was still on the mount. Then he handed it to the one who was on his right side and closest to him. The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, also drank while standing, and the entire group also drank while standing.
