بَابُ الْأَمْرِ بِأَخْذِ مَا تُسَاقِطْ مِنَ اللُّقَيْمَاتِ وَلَعْقِ الأَصَابِع بَعْدَ إِنْتِهَاءِ الْأَكْلِ وَمَا جَاءَ فِي لَحْسِ الْقَصْعَةِ وَاسْتِغْفَارِهَا لِلْآكِلِ
Chapter: Command to Pick Up Fallen Morsels, Lick Fingers After Eating, What Has Been Reported Regarding Licking the Dish, and Its Seeking Forgiveness for the Eater
Hadith 7416
عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِذَا سَقَطَتْ لُقْمَةُ أَحَدِكُمْ فَلْيَأْخُذْهَا وَلْيَمْسَحْ مَا بِهَا مِنَ الْأَذَى وَلَا يَدَعْهَا لِلشَّيْطَانِ
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When a morsel falls from the hand of any one of you, he should pick it up, clean off anything attached to it, and eat it, and not leave it for Satan.
Hadith 7417
عَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ طَعَامًا فَلَا يَمْسَحْ يَدَهُ فِي الْمِنْدِيلِ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا أَوْ يُلْعِقَهَا فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَدْرِي فِي أَيِّ طَعَامِهِ الْبَرَكَةُ وَفِي لَفْظٍ فَلَا يَمْسَحْ يَدَهُ حَتَّى يَمُصَّهَا فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَدْرِي فِي أَيِّ طَعَامٍ يُبَارَكُ لَهُ فِيهِ
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any of you finishes eating food, he should not wipe his hands with a cloth until he has licked them or had them licked, because he does not know in which part of the food the blessing lies. In another narration, the words are: He should not clean his hands until he has sucked them, because he does not know in which part of the food blessing has been placed for him.
Hadith 7418
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ فَلَا يَمْسَحْ يَدَهُ زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ بِالْمِنْدِيلِ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا أَوْ يُلْعِقَهَا قَالَ أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَا يَرْفَعُ الصُّحَيْفَةَ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا أَوْ يُلْعِقَهَا فَإِنَّ آخِرَ الطَّعَامِ فِيهِ الْبَرَكَةُ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any one of you eats food, he should not wipe his hand. In another narration, there is this addition: He should not wipe it with a cloth until he has licked it or had it licked. Abu Zubair says: I heard Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) say, I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Before lifting the bowl, lick your fingers or have them licked, for there is blessing in the last part of the food.
Hadith 7419
عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَلْعَقُ أَصَابِعَهُ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّكَ لَا تَدْرِي فِي أَيِّ طَعَامِكَ تَكُونُ الْبَرَكَةُ
Mujahid narrates that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to lick his fingers and used to say that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You do not know in which part of your food there is blessing.
Hadith 7420
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَلْعَقَنَّ أَصَابِعَهُ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَدْرِي فِي أَيَّتِهِنَّ الْبَرَكَةُ
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any of you eats food, he must certainly lick his fingers, because he does not know in which finger the blessing is.
Hadith 7421
عَنِ ابْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَلْعَقُ أَصَابِعَهُ الثَّلَاثَ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ
Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to lick his three fingers after eating food.
Hadith 7422
((وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) عَنْ أَبِيهِ) قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَأْكُلُ بِثَلَاثِ أَصَابِعَ فَلَا يَمْسَحُ يَدَهُ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا
(Second chain) The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to eat with three fingers and would lick his fingers before cleaning his hand.
Hadith 7423
حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعَلَّى بْنُ رَاشِدٍ الْهُذَلِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَتْنِي جَدَّتِي أُمُّ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ هُذَيْلٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ نُبَيْشَةُ الْخَيْرِ وَكَانَتْ لَهُ صُحْبَةٌ قَالَتْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا نُبَيْشَةُ وَنَحْنُ نَأْكُلُ فِي قَصْعَةٍ فَقَالَ لَنَا حَدَّثَنَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ مَنْ أَكَلَ فِي قَصْعَةٍ ثُمَّ لَحَسَهَا اسْتَغْفَرَتْ لَهُ الْقَصْعَةُ
Sayyiduna Nubaisha al-Khair Hudhali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: This is from the time when Umm Asim said that we were eating from a bowl when this Nubaisha Hudhali came to us and said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told us that whoever eats from a bowl and then cleans it (with his finger or by licking it), that bowl seeks forgiveness for him.
Hadith 7424
عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَعَنْ عَطَاءٍ قَالَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَبَّذَا الْمُتَخَلِّلُونَ قِيلَ وَمَا الْمُتَخَلِّلُونَ قَالَ فِي الْوُضُوءِ وَالطَّعَامِ
Narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) and Ata: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: How excellent are those who use the toothpick. He (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was asked: Who are those who use the toothpick? He (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Those who use the toothpick during ablution and after eating.
