Hadith 7396
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَا يَأْكُلْ بِشِمَالِهِ وَإِذَا شَرِبَ فَلَا يَشْرَبْ بِشِمَالِهِ وَإِذَا أَخَذَ فَلَا يَأْخُذْ بِشِمَالِهِ وَإِذَا أَعْطَى فَلَا يُعْطِ بِشِمَالِهِ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whenever any of you eats, he should not eat with his left hand, and whenever he drinks water, he should not drink with his left hand, and when he holds something, he should not hold it with his left hand, and when he gives something to someone, he should not give it with his left hand.
Hadith 7397
عَنْ سَالِمٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا يَأْكُلَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ بِشِمَالِهِ وَلَا يَشْرَبَنَّ بِهَا فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَأْكُلُ بِهَا وَيَشْرَبُ بِهَا قَالَ وَزَادَ نَافِعٌ وَلَا يَأْخُذَنَّ بِهَا وَلَا يُعْطِيَنَّ بِهَا
Narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: None of you should ever eat or drink with his left hand, for indeed Satan eats and drinks with his left hand. And never take or give anything with the left hand.
Hadith 7398
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ الرَّجُلُ بِشِمَالِهِ أَوْ يَشْرَبَ بِشِمَالِهِ قَالَ رَوْحٌ فِي حَدِيثِهِ وَيَشْرَبَ بِشِمَالِهِ
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade a person from eating and drinking with the left hand.
Hadith 7399
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ امْرَأَةٍ مِنْهُمْ قَالَتْ دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَا آكُلُ بِشِمَالِي وَكُنْتُ امْرَأَةً عَسْرَاءَ فَضَرَبَ يَدِي فَسَقَطَتِ اللُّقْمَةُ فَقَالَ لَا تَأْكُلِي بِشِمَالِكِ وَقَدْ جَعَلَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى لَكِ يَمِينًا أَوْ قَالَ قَدْ أَطْلَقَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَمِينَكِ قَالَ فَتَحَوَّلَتْ شِمَالِي يَمِينًا فَمَا أَكَلْتُ بِهَا بَعْدُ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Muhammad narrates from a woman of his tribe, she says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me and I was eating with my left hand, as I was a woman who used to work with her left hand. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck my hand and my morsel fell, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not eat with your left hand when Allah Almighty has given you a right hand, or he said that Allah Almighty has made your right hand sound. So my left hand turned into my right hand (i.e., I easily started eating with my right hand), she says: After that, I never ate with my left hand again.
Hadith 7400
حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ جَدِّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَأْكُلْ بِيَمِينِهِ وَإِذَا شَرِبَ فَلْيَشْرَبْ بِيَمِينِهِ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَأْكُلُ بِشِمَالِهِ وَيَشْرَبُ بِشِمَالِهِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: When any of you eats, let him eat with his right hand, and when he drinks, let him drink with his right hand (and not eat or drink with his left hand), for indeed Satan eats and drinks with his left hand.
Hadith 7401
عَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا تَأْكُلُوا بِالشِّمَالِ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَأْكُلُ بِالشِّمَالِ
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not eat with your left hand, because Satan eats with his left hand.
Hadith 7402
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ مَنْ أَكَلَ بِشِمَالِهِ أَكَلَ مَعَهُ الشَّيْطَانُ وَمَنْ شَرِبَ بِشِمَالِهِ شَرِبَ مَعَهُ الشَّيْطَانُ
Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever eats with the left hand, Satan eats with him, and whoever drinks with the left hand, Satan drinks with him.
Hadith 7403
عَنْ إِيَاسِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الْأَكْوَعِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ لِرَجُلٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ بُسْرُ بْنُ رَاعِي الْعَيْرِ وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ ابْنُ رَاعِي الْعَيْرِ مِنْ أَشْجَعَ أَبْصَرَهُ يَأْكُلُ بِشِمَالِهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ كُلْ بِيَمِينِكَ فَقَالَ لَا أَسْتَطِيعُ فَقَالَ لَا اسْتَطَعْتَ قَالَ فَمَا وَصَلَتْ يَمِينُهُ إِلَى فِيهِ بَعْدُ
Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man from the Ashja’ tribe named Basar bin Ra’i al-‘Ir eating with his left hand. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: “Eat with your right hand.” He replied: “I am not able to eat with my right hand.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “May you not be able to.” After that, his right hand was never able to reach his mouth.
Hadith 7404
عَنْ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَرْقُدَ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى تَحْتَ خَدِّهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ قِنِي عَذَابَكَ يَوْمَ تَبْعَثُ عِبَادَكَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ وَكَانَتْ يَدُهُ الْيُمْنَى لِطَعَامِهِ وَشَرَابِهِ وَكَانَتْ يَدُهُ الْيُسْرَى لِسَائِرِ حَاجَتِهِ
Lady Hafsa bint Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to sleep, he would place his right hand under his cheek and recite this supplication: "Allahumma qini ‘adhabaka yawma tab’athu ‘ibadak." (O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants.) He would say these words three times, and the right hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was for eating and drinking, while the left hand was for other (some) necessities.
