بَاب مَا جَاءَ فِي النُّوْمِ وَالْبَصَلِ وَنَحْوِهِمَا
Chapter: What Has Been Reported Regarding Garlic, Onions, and the Like
Hadith 7315
عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنِ الْكُرَّاثِ وَالْبَصَلِ وَالثُّومِ فَقُلْنَا أَحَرَامٌ هُوَ قَالَ لَا وَلَكِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْهُ
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade kneaded dough, onions, and garlic. We asked: Are these forbidden? He said: No, they are not forbidden, but the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has prohibited them.
Hadith 7316
عَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ أَكْلِ الْبَصَلِ وَالْكُرَّاثِ فَغَلَبَتْنَا الْحَاجَةُ فَأَكَلْنَا مِنْهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ أَكَلَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ الْمُنْتِنَةِ فَلَا يَقْرَبَنَّ مَسْجِدَنَا فَإِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تَتَأَذَّى مِمَّا يَتَأَذَّى مِنْهُ الْإِنْسُ
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) forbade eating onions and leeks, but our need overcame us and we ate them. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Whoever has eaten from this foul-smelling tree should not come near our mosque, for the angels are harmed by that which harms human beings.
Hadith 7317
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا آكُلُهُ وَلَا آمُرُ بِهِ وَلَا أَنْهَى عَنْهُ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I neither eat (onion and garlic), nor do I command them, nor do I prohibit them.
Hadith 7318
حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ قُرَّةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ هَاتَيْنِ الشَّجَرَتَيْنِ الْخَبِيثَتَيْنِ وَقَالَ مَنْ أَكَلَهُمَا فَلَا يَقْرَبَنَّ مَسْجِدَنَا وَقَالَ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لَا بُدَّ آكِلِيهِمَا فَأَمِيتُوهُمَا طَبْخًا قَالَ يَعْنِي الْبَصَلَ وَالثُّومَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qurrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade those two foul trees (onion and garlic) and said: Whoever eats these two things should by no means come near our mosque, and if you must eat them, then cook them (so that the odor is eliminated). By these, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant onion and garlic.
Hadith 7319
عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِقَصْعَةٍ فِيهَا بَصَلٌ فَقَالَ كُلُوا وَأَبَى أَنْ يَأْكُلَ وَقَالَ إِنِّي لَسْتُ كَمِثْلِكُمْ
Syedna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a bowl was brought to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it contained onions. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the people: You eat. He (peace and blessings be upon him) himself refused to eat and said: I am not like you in this matter, (because an angel comes to me with revelation).
Hadith 7320
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أُتِيَ بِطَعَامٍ أَكَلَ مِنْهُ وَبَعَثَ بِفَضْلِهِ إِلَيَّ وَإِنَّهُ بَعَثَ يَوْمًا بِقَصْعَةٍ لَمْ يَأْكُلْ مِنْهَا شَيْئًا فِيهَا ثُومٌ فَسَأَلْتُهُ أَحَرَامٌ هُوَ قَالَ لَا وَلَكِنِّي أَكْرَهُهُ مِنْ أَجْلِ رِيحِهِ قَالَ فَإِنِّي أَكْرَهُ مَا كَرِهْتَ وَفِي لَفْظٍ فَقَالَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي هَذَا الطَّعَامُ لَمْ تَأْكُلْ مِنْهُ آكُلُ مِنْهُ قَالَ فِيهِ تِلْكَ الثُّومَةُ فَيَسْتَأْذِنُ عَلَيَّ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ قَالَ فَآكُلُ مِنْهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَكُلْ
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that when food was presented before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) would eat from it and grant the remainder to me. One day, a bowl of food was presented before him (peace and blessings be upon him), but he did not eat from it; it contained garlic. I asked him (peace and blessings be upon him): "Is this forbidden?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "No, it is not forbidden, but I dislike it because of its odor." In another narration, Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "May my parents be sacrificed for you! You (peace and blessings be upon him) did not eat this food, and should I eat it? That cannot be." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It contains garlic, and Jibreel (peace be upon him) comes to me with revelation by permission, so I do not eat it." Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then should I eat from it, O Messenger of Allah?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, so eat."
Hadith 7321
حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي يَزِيدَ أَخْبَرَهُ أَبُوهُ قَالَ نَزَلْتُ عَلَى أُمِّ أَيُّوبَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا الَّذِي نَزَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَزَلْتُ عَلَيْهَا فَحَدَّثَتْنِي بِهَذَا عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُمْ تَكَلَّفُوا طَعَامًا فِيهِ بَعْضُ هَذِهِ الْبُقُولِ فَقَرَّبُوهُ فَكَرِهَهُ وَقَالَ لِأَصْحَابِهِ كُلُوا إِنِّي لَسْتُ كَأَحَدٍ مِنْكُمْ إِنِّي أَخَافُ أَنْ أُوذِيَ صَاحِبِي يَعْنِي الْمَلَكَ
It is narrated from Yazid, he says: I stayed with Sayyida Umm Ayyub Ansariyyah, may Allah be pleased with her, in whose house the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stayed at the time of migration. She related to me that people gave the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, food that was distressing, in which there were these vegetables—onion and garlic as well. But he, peace and blessings be upon him, did not like this food and said to his companions: You eat it, I am not like you. I fear that I might cause discomfort to my angelic companion.
Hadith 7322
عَنْ أَبِي زَيَادٍ خَيَارِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا عَنِ الْبَصَلِ فَقَالَتْ إِنَّ آخِرَ طَعَامٍ أَكَلَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ طَعَامٌ فِيهِ بَصَلٌ
Abu Ziyad Khiyar bin Salamah asked Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about onions. She said: The last meal that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate contained onions.
Hadith 7323
عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ انْتَهَيْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ فَوَجَدَ مِنِّي رِيحَ الثُّومِ فَقَالَ مَنْ أَكَلَ الثُّومَ قَالَ فَأَخَذْتُ يَدَهُ فَأَدْخَلْتُهَا فَوَجَدَ صَدْرِي مَعْصُوبًا قَالَ إِنَّ لَكَ عُذْرًا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) sensed the smell of garlic from me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Who has eaten garlic? In response, I placed the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on my chest. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) found the bandage tied on my chest, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Alright, you are excused.
Hadith 7324
عَنْ أَبِي الرَّبَابِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مَعْقِلَ بْنَ يَسَارٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَسِيرٍ لَهُ فَنَزَلْنَا فِي مَكَانٍ كَثِيرِ الثُّومِ وَإِنَّ أُنَاسًا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ أَصَابُوا مِنْهُ ثُمَّ جَاءُوا إِلَى الْمُصَلَّى يُصَلُّونَ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَنَهَاهُمْ عَنْهَا ثُمَّ جَاءُوا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ إِلَى الْمُصَلَّى فَنَهَاهُمْ عَنْهَا ثُمَّ جَاءُوا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ إِلَى الْمُصَلَّى فَنَهَاهُمْ عَنْهَا ثُمَّ جَاءُوا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ إِلَى الْمُصَلَّى فَوَجَدَ رِيحَهَا مِنْهُمْ فَقَالَ مَنْ أَكَلَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ فَلَا يَقْرَبْنَا فِي مَسْجِدِنَا
Sayyiduna Ma’qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we were traveling with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). We stopped at a place where there was a lot of garlic. Some of the Muslims ate it and then came to the place of prayer to perform salah with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade them from this. After that, they again came to the place of prayer after eating garlic; he forbade them. But after that, they again came to the place of prayer after eating garlic; the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then forbade them. After that, when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sensed the smell that they had come after eating garlic and the like, he said: Whoever has eaten from this tree should not come near our mosque.
