Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We left Makkah, and the daughter of Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) started following us and called out: My uncle! My uncle! So I took her hand and entrusted her to Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), saying: She is your uncle’s daughter, keep her in your care. When we reached Madinah, Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him), Ja’far (may Allah be pleased with him), and I all began to dispute about her. I said: I brought her, and she is my uncle’s daughter. Zayd said: She is my brother’s daughter, and Ja’far said: She is my uncle’s daughter, and her maternal aunt is my wife. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (in making the decision) said to Ja’far: You resemble me in appearance and character. He said to Zayd: You are our brother and friend. And to me (Ali), he said: You are from me and I am from you. Do this: entrust the girl to her maternal aunt, for the maternal aunt is like the mother. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Why do you not marry her? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: She is my foster niece.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left Makkah for Madinah, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) also took the daughter of Sayyiduna Hamzah with him. Then, regarding her, there was a dispute between Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna Ja’far, and Sayyiduna Zayd. When they came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: She is my niece and I brought her out. Sayyiduna Ja’far (may Allah be pleased with him) said: She is my niece and her maternal aunt is in my wedlock. Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: She is my niece. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had established brotherhood between Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him), (for this reason he called Sayyiduna Hamzah his brother). Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), while deciding, said to Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him): You are my friend and the friend of this girl. He said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): You are my companion and my brother. And he said to Sayyiduna Ja’far (may Allah be pleased with him): You resemble me in creation and character. Now this girl will be brought up by her maternal aunt.
