8 hadith
Hadith 7117
Bahz bin Hakim narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather, that he said: O Messenger of Allah! These are our wives, what dealings with them are permissible for us and what are not permissible? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: They are your fields, so come to your field as you wish, but do not strike her on the face, nor speak to her with hateful words. (If angry) only leave her in the house. When you eat, feed her as well, and when you dress, clothe her as well. Now how will you not fulfill these rights, while you have already had intercourse with each other, except if a situation arises in which the wife may be punished (or her rights may be reduced).

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: When you eat, feed her as well; when you clothe yourself, clothe her as well; do not strike her on the face; do not speak to her in a repulsive manner; and (in case of displeasure) do not leave her except within your own house.

In the midst of this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Why does one of you beat his wife as he beats a slave, then perhaps at the end of the day or the end of the night he will have to be intimate with her.

Narrated from Sayyiduna Laqit bin Sabirah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I said, "O Messenger of Allah! I have a wife who is very sharp-tongued and causes me distress." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Divorce her." He said, "I have a long companionship with her and I have children from her." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then keep her and continue to advise her towards goodness. If she has the ability to accept goodness, she will accept it. Narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: Sayyida Khawla bint Hakim (may Allah be pleased with her) came to me; she was the wife of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him). When the Messenger of Allah saw her disheveled state, he said to me: "Aisha! Khawla's condition is very untidy." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Just consider that this woman has no husband, because he fasts during the day and stands in prayer at night. Therefore, Khawla is like a woman whose husband is not present, so she has not paid any attention to herself and has neglected herself." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), so he came, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Uthman! Are you turning away from my Sunnah?" He said: "By Allah, no, O Messenger of Allah! I am indeed seeking your Sunnah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If that is so, then I sleep and I pray, I fast and I break my fast, and I have married women. O Uthman! Fear Allah, your wife has a right over you, your guest has a right over you, and your own self has a right over you. Therefore, fast sometimes and leave it sometimes, pray and also sleep."
