بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي الْكَهَانَةِ وَأَصْلٍ مَأْخَذِهَا وَكَيْفَ يُصَدُّقُ الْكَاهِنُ فِي بَعْضِ الْأُمُورِ
Chapter: What Has Been Reported Regarding Soothsaying, Its Origin, and How the Soothsayer Is Believed in Some Matters
Hadith 6812
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ وَعَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَنْبَأَنَا مَعْمَرٌ أَنْبَأَنَا الزُّهْرِيُّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حُسَيْنٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَالِسًا فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ: مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ، فَرُمِيَ بِنَجْمٍ عَظِيمٍ فَاسْتَنَارَ، قَالَ: ((مَا كُنْتُمْ تَقُولُونَ إِذَا كَانَ مِثْلُ هَذَا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ؟)) قَالَ: كُنَّا نَقُولُ: يُولَدُ عَظِيمٌ أَوْ يَمُوتُ عَظِيمٌ، قُلْتُ لِلزُّهْرِيِّ: أَكَانَ يُرْمَى بِهَا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، وَلَكِنْ غُلِّظَتْ حِينَ بُعِثَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((فَإِنَّهُ لَا يُرْمَى بِهَا لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ وَلَكِنَّ رَبَّنَا تَبَارَكَ اسْمُهُ إِذَا قَضَى أَمْرًا سَبَّحَ (وَفِي لَفْظٍ: سَبَّحَهُ) حَمَلَةُ الْعَرْشِ ثُمَّ سَبَّحَ أَهْلُ السَّمَاءِ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ حَتَّى بَلَغَ التَّسْبِيحُ هَذِهِ السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا، ثُمَّ يَسْتَخْبِرُ أَهْلُ السَّمَاءِ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَ حَمَلَةَ الْعَرْشِ فَيَقُولُ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَ حَمَلَةَ الْعَرْشِ لِحَمَلَةِ الْعَرْشِ: مَاذَا قَالَ رَبُّكُمْ؟ فَيُخْبِرُونَهُمْ، وَيُخْبِرُ أَهْلُ كُلِّ سَمَاءٍ سَمَاءً حَتَّى يَنْتَهِيَ الْخَبَرُ إِلَى هَذِهِ السَّمَاءِ وَيَخْطِفُ الْجِنُّ السَّمْعَ فَيُرْمَوْنَ، فَمَا جَاءُوا بِهِ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ فَهُوَ حَقٌّ وَلَكِنَّهُمْ يَقْذِفُونَ وَيَزِيدُونَ)) (وَفِي لَفْظٍ: وَيَنْقُصُونَ) قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ: (يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْإِمَامِ أَحْمَدَ) قَالَ أَبِي: قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ: وَيَخْطِفُ الْجِنُّ وَيُرْمَوْنَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was present among a group of companions. Abdur Razzaq said: These were Ansari people with whom you were sitting. Meanwhile, a very large star was shot, and its light spread. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When this used to happen in the time of ignorance, what did you say? They said: We used to say that either a great man has been born or a great person has died. I asked Zuhri: Were stars also shot in the time of ignorance? He said: Yes, but when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent, their intensity increased. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: These stars are not shot because of anyone’s death or life. The reason is that when our Lord, Blessed and Exalted, decides upon a matter, the angels who carry the Throne say “Subhan Allah,” then the angels of the nearest heaven say “Subhan Allah,” until this beautiful sound of “Subhan Allah” spreads to the heaven of the world. Then the angels of the heavens try to obtain information from the Throne-bearing angels near them. Those near the Throne ask them: What has your Lord said? They inform them, and each group of angels of the heavens informs those of the lower heaven, until the news reaches the angels of the heaven of the world. Meanwhile, the jinn snatch a portion of this information by stealing, and a star is thrown at them. Whatever part of the news they manage to bring, that is true, but they mix lies with it and exaggerate, and according to another narration, they decrease from it. Abdur Razzaq said: The jinn snatch the words of revelation, but then a star is thrown at them.
Hadith 6813
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: كَانَ الْجِنُّ يَسْمَعُونَ الْوَحْيَ فَيَسْتَمِعُونَ الْكَلِمَةَ فَيَزِيدُونَ فِيهَا عَشْرًا فَيَكُونَ مَا سَمِعُوا حَقًّا وَمَا زَادُوهُ بَاطِلًا وَكَانَتِ النُّجُومُ لَا يُرْمَى بِهَا قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ، فَلَمَّا بُعِثَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ أَحَدُهُمْ لَا يَأْتِي مَقْعَدَهُ إِلَّا رُمِيَ بِشِهَابٍ يُحْرِقُ مَا أَصَابَ، فَشَكَوْا ذَلِكَ إِلَى إِبْلِيسَ فَقَالَ: مَا هَذَا إِلَّا مِنْ أَمْرٍ قَدْ حَدَثَ، فَبَثَّ جُنُودَهُ، فَإِذَا هُمْ بِالنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي بَيْنَ جَبَلَيْ نَخْلَةَ، فَأَتَوْهُ، فَأَخْبَرُوهُ فَقَالَ: هَذَا الْحَدَثُ الَّذِي حَدَثَ فِي الْأَرْضِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, that the jinn used to listen to the revelation and, after hearing one thing, would add ten things to it. Whatever they had heard was true, but what they added from themselves was false. Before the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, shooting stars did not fall. When the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was sent, whichever jinn came to his place, the shooting star that struck him would burn him. They complained about this to Iblis. He said: Surely, some new situation has arisen, that is why this is happening. He spread out his armies to investigate. Suddenly, they saw that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was performing prayer between two mountains in the valley of Nakhlah. They came to Iblis and informed him of this. He said: This is the event that has newly occurred on the earth.
Hadith 6814
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَتْ: سَأَلَ نَاسٌ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْكُهَّانِ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَيْسُوا بِشَيْءٍ)) فَقَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنَّهُمْ يُحَدِّثُونَ أَحْيَانًا بِشَيْءٍ يَكُونُ حَقًّا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((تِلْكَ الْكَلِمَةُ مِنَ الْحَقِّ يَخْطِفُهَا الْجِنِّيُّ فَيُقِرُّهَا فِي أُذُنِ وَلِيِّهِ قَرَّ الدَّجَاجَةِ فَيَخْلِطُونَ فِيهَا مِائَةَ كَذْبَةٍ))
It is narrated from the wife of the Prophet, Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), that people asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) about soothsayers. He (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said to them: They have no reality. They said: O Messenger of Allah! Sometimes they say something that turns out to be true. He (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: That is a true word which a jinn snatches, then he cackles it into the ear of his friend like a hen does, and they mix a hundred lies with it.
