Chapter: What Has Been Reported Regarding Highway Robbers and Bandits
Hadith 6800
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَدِمَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثَمَانِيَةُ نَفَرٍ مِنْ عُكْلٍ فَأَسْلَمُوا فَاجْتَوَوْا الْمَدِينَةَ فَأَمَرَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يَأْتُوا إِبِلَ الصَّدَقَةِ فَيَشْرَبُوا مِنْ أَبْوَالِهَا وَأَلْبَانِهَا فَفَعَلُوا فَصَحُّوا فَارْتَدُّوا وَقَتَلُوا رُعَاةَهَا وَسَاقُوهَا فَبَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي طَلَبِهِمْ قَافَةً فَأُتِيَ بِهِمْ فَقَطَعَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ وَأَرْجُلَهُمْ وَلَمْ يَحْسِمْهُمْ حَتَّى مَاتُوا وَسَمَلَ أَعْيُنَهُمْ
Narrated by Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): Eight individuals from the tribe of ‘Ukl came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and accepted Islam. However, when they found the climate of Madinah unsuitable, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them to go to the camels of charity and drink their urine and milk. They did so, and when they regained their health, they became apostates, killed the shepherds, and drove away the camels. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent people in pursuit of them, and they were captured and brought back. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had their hands and feet cut off and did not cauterize them, until they died. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also had hot iron rods passed over their eyes.
Hadith 6801
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ نَفَرًا مِنْ عُكْلٍ ثَمَانِيَةً قَدِمُوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَبَايَعُوهُ عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ فَاسْتَوْخَمُوا الْأَرْضَ فَسَقِمَتْ أَجْسَامُهُمْ فَشَكَوْا ذَلِكَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ وَفِي آخِرِهِ ثُمَّ نُبِذُوا فِي الشَّمْسِ حَتَّى مَاتُوا
(Second chain) Eight individuals from the tribe of ‘Ukal came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and pledged allegiance to Islam at his hands. The climate of Madinah did not suit them and their bodies fell ill. When they complained of this to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, … then it was narrated as in the previous hadith …, however, at the end of this narration it is stated: Then they were thrown into the sun until they died.
Hadith 6802
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَالِثٍ) عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ بِنَحْوِهِ وَفِيهِ فَقَطَعَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ وَأَرْجُلَهُمْ مِنْ خِلَافٍ وَسَمَرَ أَعْيُنَهُمْ وَأَلْقَاهُمْ بِالْحَرَّةِ قَالَ أَنَسٌ قَدْ كُنْتُ أَرَى أَحَدَهُمْ يَكْدِمُ الْأَرْضَ بِفِيهِ حَتَّى مَاتُوا قَالَ قَتَادَةُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ إِنَّمَا كَانَ هَذَا قَبْلَ أَنْ تَنْزِلَ الْحُدُودُ
(Third chain of narration) There is a similar narration, except that in it: You had their hands and feet cut off from the opposite sides, and had iron rods passed through their eyes, and threw them on the stony ground of Harrah. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I saw one of them biting the ground with his mouth, then all of them died in that state. Muhammad bin Sirin said: This happened before the (relevant) punishments were revealed.
