Hadith 6312
Narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When the son of Adam dies, all his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge from which benefit is derived, and a righteous child who prays for him.
Hadith 6313
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) acquired a piece of land called Thamgh from the Jews of Banu Harithah. Regarding this, he submitted to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! I have obtained a valuable and excellent property, and I wish to give it in charity. Then, according to the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he gave it in charity in such a way that it would neither be sold, nor gifted, nor inherited. The wise people from the family of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would supervise it, and whatever wealth remained after its expenses would be spent in the way of Allah, on travelers, for freeing slaves, on the poor, relatives, and guests. Its supervisor may eat from it in a good manner and also feed guests, but should not seek to amass wealth from it. Hammad says that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to send gifts from this land to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyidah Hafsah bint Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) also gave their respective lands in charity just as their father, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), had done. The supervisor of the land of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) herself.
Hadith 6314
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the very first charity in Islam was given by Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Keep the principal of these date palms and give their fruits in charity in the way of Allah Almighty.
Hadith 6315
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had designated the pasture of Naqi’ specifically for horses. Hammad says: I asked, did he, peace and blessings be upon him, designate it for his own horses? He replied: No, he designated it for the horses of the Muslims.
Hadith 6316
Narrated by Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): Among the Ansar of Madinah, Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) was the wealthiest, and the property he loved most was the garden of Birha’, which was situated directly opposite the Prophet’s Mosque. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to enter it and drink its sweet water. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When this verse was revealed: “You will not attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love,” Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Allah Almighty says: {لَنْ تَنَالُو الْبِرَّ حَتّٰی تُنْفِقُوْا مِمَّا تُحِبُّوْنَ} and the property of Birha’ is what I love most, so I give it in charity for the sake of Allah, and I hope for its goodness and for it to be a treasure for me with Allah in the Hereafter. O Messenger of Allah! Spend it wherever Allah enables you to see fit. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Wonderful, wonderful! That is a profitable property. I have heard what you have said, and I think you should distribute it among your close relatives. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! I will do so, and then he distributed that garden among his relatives and the sons of his paternal uncles.
