بَابُ فَضْلٍ مَنْ أَنْظَرَ مُعْسِرًا أَوْ وَضَعَ لَهُ
Chapter: The virtue of one who grants respite to a debtor in difficulty or waives it for him
Hadith 6048
عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ أَظَلَّ اللَّهُ فِي ظِلِّهِ يَوْمَ لَا ظِلَّ إِلَّا ظِلُّهُ مَنْ أَنْظَرَ مُعْسِرًا أَوْ تَرَكَ لِغَارِمٍ
Narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty will grant shade to that person on the Day when there will be no other shade, who gives respite to a debtor in difficulty or forgives the one who owes him.
Hadith 6049
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ بِيَدِهِ هَكَذَا فَأَوْمَأَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بِيَدِهِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ مَنْ أَنْظَرَ مُعْسِرًا أَوْ وَضَعَ لَهُ وَقَاهُ اللَّهُ مِنْ فَيْحِ جَهَنَّمَ أَلَا إِنَّ عَمَلَ الْجَنَّةِ حَزْنٌ بِرَبْوَةٍ ثَلَاثًا أَلَا إِنَّ عَمَلَ النَّارِ سَهْلٌ بِسَهْوَةٍ وَالسَّعِيدُ مَنْ وُقِيَ الْفِتَنَ وَمَا مِنْ جُرْعَةٍ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ جُرْعَةِ غَيْظٍ يَكْظِمُهَا عَبْدٌ مَا كَظَمَهَا عَبْدٌ إِلَّا مَلَأَ اللَّهُ جَوْفَهُ إِيمَانًا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out towards the mosque and he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed towards the ground with his blessed hand. Abu Abdur Rahman also made a similar gesture. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever grants respite to a destitute person or forgives him, Allah Almighty will protect him from the steam of Hell. Beware! The deeds of the people of Paradise are as difficult as ploughing on high, hard ground (this phrase was repeated three times), and the deeds of the people of Hell, due to following desires, are like ploughing on soft ground. And fortunate is the one who is saved from tribulations. The most beloved gulp to me is that which a servant swallows while restraining his anger. When a servant (controls his anger and) swallows such a gulp, Allah Almighty fills his belly with faith.
Hadith 6050
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِنَّ رَجُلًا لَمْ يَعْمَلْ خَيْرًا قَطُّ فَكَانَ يُدَايِنُ النَّاسَ فَيَقُولُ لِرَسُولِهِ خُذْ مَا تَيَسَّرَ وَاتْرُكْ مَا عَسُرَ وَتَجَاوَزْ لَعَلَّ اللَّهَ يَتَجَاوَزُ عَنَّا فَلَمَّا هَلَكَ قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَهُ هَلْ عَمِلْتَ خَيْرًا قَطُّ قَالَ لَا إِلَّا أَنَّهُ كَانَ لِي غُلَامٌ وَكُنْتُ أُدَايِنُ النَّاسَ فَإِذَا بَعَثْتُهُ يَتَقَاضَى قُلْتُ لَهُ خُذْ مَا تَيَسَّرَ وَاتْرُكْ مَا عَسُرَ وَتَجَاوَزْ لَعَلَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَتَجَاوَزُ عَنَّا قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَدْ تَجَاوَزْتُ عَنْكَ
Narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There was a man who had never performed any good deed, except that when he dealt with people in business transactions, he would say to his agent: Take from whoever is able to pay, and leave whoever is in difficulty, and forgive them; perhaps Allah Almighty will forgive us as well. So when he died, Allah Almighty said to him: Did you ever do any good deed? He replied: No, except that I did one thing: I used to do business transactions with people, and when I sent my servant to collect payment, I would say to him: Take from whoever is able to pay, and leave whoever is in difficulty, and forgive them; perhaps because of this Allah Almighty will forgive us. Allah Almighty said: Indeed, I have forgiven you.
Hadith 6051
عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ الْبَدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَحْوُهُ
Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud Badri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated a similar narration from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).
Hadith 6052
عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ الْيَمَانِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَحْوُهُ وَزَادَ فَأَدْخَلَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ الْجَنَّةَ
Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with both of them) also narrated a similar hadith, except that in it the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: So Allah Almighty admitted him into Paradise.
Hadith 6053
عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ كَانَ لَهُ عَلَى رَجُلٍ حَقٌّ فَمَنْ أَخَّرَهُ كَانَ لَهُ بِكُلِّ يَوْمٍ صَدَقَةٌ
Narrated by Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever has a right over someone and grants him respite (for a few days), he will receive the reward of giving that amount in charity for each day.
Hadith 6054
عَنْ بُرَيْدَةَ الْأَسْلَمِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَنْ أَنْظَرَ مُعْسِرًا فَلَهُ بِكُلِّ يَوْمٍ مِثْلُهُ صَدَقَةٌ قَالَ ثُمَّ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ مَنْ أَنْظَرَ مُعْسِرًا فَلَهُ بِكُلِّ يَوْمٍ مِثْلَيْهِ صَدَقَةٌ قُلْتُ سَمِعْتُكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ تَقُولُ مَنْ أَنْظَرَ مُعْسِرًا فَلَهُ بِكُلِّ يَوْمٍ مِثْلُهُ صَدَقَةٌ ثُمَّ سَمِعْتُكَ تَقُولُ مَنْ أَنْظَرَ مُعْسِرًا فَلَهُ بِكُلِّ يَوْمٍ مِثْلَيْهِ صَدَقَةٌ قَالَ لَهُ بِكُلِّ يَوْمٍ صَدَقَةٌ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَحِلَّ الدَّيْنُ فَإِذَا حَلَّ الدَّيْنُ فَأَنْظَرَ فَلَهُ بِكُلِّ يَوْمٍ مِثْلَيْهِ صَدَقَةٌ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraidah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever grants respite to a destitute debtor, he will receive the reward of giving charity equal to the amount of that debt for every day. Then one day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever grants respite to a destitute debtor, he will receive the reward of giving charity double the amount for every day. I said: O Messenger of Allah! One day I heard you say that whoever grants respite to a destitute debtor, he will receive the reward of giving charity equal to the amount of that debt for every day. And one day you (peace and blessings be upon him) said that whoever grants respite to a destitute debtor, he will receive the reward of giving charity double the amount for every day. (The first time you mentioned single, and the second time double)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Before the due date of the debt arrives, for every day he will receive the reward of giving charity equal to the amount of that debt, and when the due date arrives and he grants respite, then for every day he will receive the reward of giving charity double the amount of the debt.
Hadith 6055
عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ الْقُرَظِيِّ أَنَّ أَبَا قَتَادَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ كَانَ لَهُ عَلَى رَجُلٍ دَيْنٌ وَكَانَ يَأْتِيهِ يَتَقَاضَاهُ فَيَخْتَبِئُ مِنْهُ فَجَاءَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَخَرَجَ صَبِيٌّ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ هُوَ فِي الْبَيْتِ يَأْكُلُ خَزِيرَةً فَنَادَاهُ يَا فُلَانُ اخْرُجْ فَقَدْ أُخْبِرْتُ أَنَّكَ هَاهُنَا فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ مَا يُغِيبُكَ عَنِّي قَالَ إِنِّي مُعْسِرٌ وَلَيْسَ عِنْدِي قَالَ آللَّهِ إِنَّكَ مُعْسِرٌ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَبَكَى أَبُو قَتَادَةَ ثُمَّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَنْ نَفَّسَ عَنْ غَرِيمِهِ أَوْ مَحَا عَنْهُ كَانَ فِي ظِلِّ الْعَرْشِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
Muhammad bin Ka'b Qurazi says: Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) had lent money to a man. That man used to come to him to demand repayment, but the debtor would hide upon seeing him. One day, as usual, he came to demand his debt, and the man's son came out of the house. Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him about his debtor, where he was. The boy said: Yes, he is at home and eating khazirah. Hearing this, Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) called out: O so-and-so! Come outside, I know that you are at home. So he came out. Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: What is the reason that you hide from me? He replied: The fact is that I am in hardship, I do not have the means to repay the debt. Hearing this, Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep and then said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever gives respite to a debtor or forgives his debt, he will stand under the shade of Allah's Throne on the Day of Resurrection.
Hadith 6056
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ تُسْتَجَابَ دَعْوَتُهُ وَتُنْكَشَفَ كُرْبَتُهُ فَلْيُفَرِّجْ عَنْ مُعْسِرٍ
Narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever wishes that his supplication be accepted and his hardship be removed, then he should show ease to the destitute.
Hadith 6057
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنْ أَنْظَرَ مُعْسِرًا أَوْ وَضَعَ لَهُ أَظَلَّهُ اللَّهُ فِي ظِلِّ عَرْشِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
Narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever grants respite to a destitute person or forgives his debt, Allah the Exalted will grant him shade under His Throne on the Day of Resurrection.
Hadith 6058
عَنْ أَبِي الْيَسَرِ صَاحِبِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُظِلَّهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي ظِلِّهِ زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ يَوْمَ لَا ظِلَّ إِلَّا ظِلُّهُ فَلْيُنْظِرِ الْمُعْسِرَ أَوْ لِيَضَعْ عَنْهُ
It is narrated from the companion of the Messenger, Sayyiduna Abu Al-Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever wishes that Allah Almighty should shade him on the Day when there will be no shade except His shade, then he should grant respite to the destitute or forgive his debt altogether.
