It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair bin Al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is better for a man to put a rope on his shoulder, carry a bundle of firewood, and bring it to the market to sell, earning wealth from it to spend on himself, than to go around begging from people, whether they give him something or not."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O people! Allah Almighty is pure and accepts only that which is pure, and indeed Allah Almighty has commanded the believers with the same command that He gave to His messengers. Allah the Exalted says: O Messengers! Eat of the pure things and do righteous deeds; surely I am aware of what you do. (: Surah Al-Mu’minun: 51) And He also said: O believers! Eat of the pure things which We have provided for you as sustenance. (: Surah Al-Baqarah: 172) Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned a man who undertakes a long journey, his hair is disheveled and covered with dust, and he stretches his hands towards the sky and supplicates: O my Lord! O my Lord! While his food, drink, clothing, and nourishment are unlawful, so how can his supplication be accepted?

Narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When a servant earns unlawful wealth and spends from it, it is not accepted from him, and if he gives charity from such wealth, that too is not accepted, and when he leaves behind such wealth, it becomes his provision towards Hell. The reason is that Allah Almighty does not erase evil with evil, rather He removes evil with good. Surely, one impure thing cannot erase another impure thing.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, who says: If a man buys a garment for ten dirhams and one dirham of it is from unlawful earnings, then as long as that cloth remains on his body, Allah Almighty will not accept his prayer. Then Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, put both his fingers in his ears and said: If I have not heard this from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then may both my ears become deaf.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying this, and at the same time he pointed towards his ears: Indeed, the lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, but between the lawful and unlawful there are some doubtful matters, many people are unaware of whether they are lawful or unlawful. Whoever avoids these doubtful matters has protected his religion and honor, and whoever indulges in them is close to falling into the unlawful. Its example is like a man who grazes his animals near a sanctuary; it is possible that they may enter it. Every king has a forbidden area, and the forbidden things of Allah Almighty are His prohibited matters. There is a piece of flesh in the human body; if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Beware! That is the heart.

The flesh that has been nourished by the unlawful will not enter Paradise; the Fire is more deserving of it.

Abu Bakr bin Abi Maryam says that Sayyiduna Miqdam bin Ma'di Yakrib (may Allah be pleased with him) had a slave girl who used to sell milk, and he used to take the price of that milk. Someone said to him: Subhan Allah! (How astonishing) The slave girl sells the milk and you take the price? He replied: There is nothing sinful in this.
