Hadith 5653
It is narrated from Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to frequently make this supplication: "O Allah, Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion." One day I said: O Messenger of Allah! Do hearts also turn (that you supplicate so often)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, indeed. The heart of every human being among the children of Adam is between two fingers of the fingers of Allah Almighty. If Allah wills, He keeps it firm, and if He wills, He turns it aside. So we ask our Lord not to let our hearts deviate after He has guided us, and we ask Him to grant us mercy from Himself. Surely, He is the Bestower. I (Umm Salama) said: Will you teach me a supplication so that I may supplicate for myself with it? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, why not. Recite this supplication: "O Allah, Lord of Muhammad the Prophet! Forgive my sin, remove the anger from my heart, and protect me from the misguiding trials as long as You keep us alive."
Hadith 5654
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Nawwas bin Sam'an Kalabi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Every heart is between two fingers from among the fingers of the Lord of the worlds; if He wills, He keeps it steadfast on the right path, and if He wills, He turns it away. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself used to supplicate: "O Turner of the hearts! Keep our hearts firm upon Your religion." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: The balance is in the hand of the Most Merciful; He lowers it and raises it.
Hadith 5655
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to frequently supplicate: "O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion." I said: O Messenger of Allah, you also frequently make this supplication. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, the heart of a person is between two fingers from among the fingers of Allah Almighty; if He wills, He turns it aside, and if He wills, He keeps it straight.
Hadith 5656
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to frequently supplicate: "O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion." The companions and family members of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! Do you fear for us, while we are with you and have believed in the Shari'ah you have brought?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Indeed, the hearts are in the hand of Allah Almighty; He keeps turning them as He wills."
Hadith 5657
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Verily, the hearts of the children of Adam are between two fingers of the Most Merciful, like a single heart. He turns them as He wills. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made this supplication: "O Allah! Turner of the hearts, turn our hearts towards Your obedience."
Hadith 5658
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head towards the sky, he would supplicate: "Ya Musarrifal Quloob, thabbit qalbi 'ala ta'atik" (O Turner of the hearts! Turn my heart towards Your obedience).
Hadith 5659
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The heart is called "qalb" (in Arabic) because it keeps turning over. The example of the heart is like a feather hanging by the trunk of a tree, which the wind keeps turning over and over.
