بَابُ النَّهْي عَنْ قَوْلِ الدَّاعِيِّ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي إِنْ شِئْتَ وَعَنْ اسْتِبْطَاءِ الإِجَابَةِ وَكَرَاهَة السَّجَع فِی الدُّعَاءِ
Chapter on the Prohibition of Saying "O Allah, Forgive Me If You Will," Delaying the Response, and the Dislike of Rhymed Supplication
Hadith 5610
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِذَا دَعَا أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَا يَقُولَنَّ اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ شِئْتَ وَلَكِنْ لِيُعْظِمْ رَغْبَتَهُ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَا يَتَعَاظَمُ عَلَيْهِ شَيْءٌ أَعْطَاهُ
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When any person makes supplication, he should not say: O Allah! If You will, then do such and such; rather, he should emphasize his desire (and supplicate with insistence), for nothing is difficult or great for Allah Almighty.
Hadith 5611
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا يَقُولَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي إِنْ شِئْتَ اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْنِي إِنْ شِئْتَ وَلَكِنْ لِيَعْزِمِ الْمَسْأَلَةَ فَإِنَّهُ لَا مُكْرِهَ لَهُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: No one should ever supplicate in this manner: "O Allah! If You will, forgive me. O Allah! If You will, have mercy on me." Rather, he should present his request with insistence, for there is no one who can compel Allah Almighty.
Hadith 5612
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِنَحْوِهِ
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) has also narrated a similar type of Prophetic hadith.
Hadith 5613
عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا يَزَالُ الْعَبْدُ بِخَيْرٍ مَا لَمْ يَسْتَعْجِلْ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَيْفَ يَسْتَعْجِلُ قَالَ يَقُولُ دَعَوْتُ رَبِّي فَلَمْ يَسْتَجِبْ لِي
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A servant remains in goodness as long as he does not become hasty. The people asked: O Messenger of Allah! How does he become hasty? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He says, "I have prayed to my Lord, but He has not answered my prayer."
Hadith 5614
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّهُ يُسْتَجَابُ لِأَحَدِكُمْ مَا لَمْ يُعَجِّلْ فَيَقُولَ قَدْ دَعَوْتُ رَبِّي فَلَمْ يَسْتَجِبْ لِي
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: A man's supplication is accepted as long as he does not become hasty. Hastiness is when he begins to say: I prayed to my Lord, but He did not answer my prayer.
Hadith 5615
عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ قَالَ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا لِابْنِ أَبِي السَّائِبِ قَاصِّ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ ثَلَاثًا لَتُبَايِعَنِّي عَلَيْهِنَّ أَوْ لَأُنَاجِزَنَّكَ فَقَالَ مَا هُنَّ بَلْ أَنَا أُبَايِعُكِ يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ قَالَتْ اجْتَنِبِ السَّجْعَ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَصْحَابَهُ كَانُوا لَا يَفْعَلُونَ ذَلِكَ وَقَالَ إِسْمَاعِيلُ مَرَّةً فَقَالَتْ إِنِّي عَهِدْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَصْحَابَهُ وَهُمْ لَا يَفْعَلُونَ ذَاكَ وَقُصَّ عَلَى النَّاسِ فِي كُلِّ جُمُعَةٍ مَرَّةً فَإِنْ أَبَيْتَ فَثِنْتَيْنِ فَإِنْ أَبَيْتَ فَثَلَاثًا فَلَا تُمِلَّ النَّاسَ هَذَا الْكِتَابَ وَلَا أُلْفِيَنَّكَ تَأْتِي الْقَوْمَ وَهُمْ فِي حَدِيثٍ مِنْ حَدِيثِهِمْ فَتَقْطَعُ عَلَيْهِمْ حَدِيثَهُمْ وَلَكِنِ اتْرُكْهُمْ فَإِذَا جَرَّءُوكَ عَلَيْهِ وَأَمَرُوكَ بِهِ فَحَدِّثْهُمْ
It is narrated from Imam Shabi that Lady Aisha said to the preacher of Medina, Ibn Abi Saib: Remember three things, you must certainly pledge allegiance to me on them, or I will dispute with you. He said: O Mother of the Believers! What are those things? I will definitely pledge allegiance to you. Lady Aisha said: (1) Avoid rhyming in supplication, because the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and the noble Companions did not do so. The words of the narrator Ismail are: I did not find the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and the Companions doing so. (2) Preach to the people once a week, if you refuse then do it twice, if you do not accept even this then do it three times, but do not make people weary of this Book, and (3) I should not find you going to some people while they are engaged in their conversation and you interrupt their talk, rather leave them to their state, yes, if they demand from you and command you, then speak to them.
