Chapter on What Is Said During Distress, Grief, and Anxiety, and What One Says When Overcome by a Matter
Hadith 5573
عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ عُمَيْسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ عَلَّمَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَلِمَاتٍ أَقُولُهَا عِنْدَ الْكَرْبِ اللَّهُ رَبِّي لَا أُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئًا
It is narrated from Sayyida Asma bint Umais (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) taught me this supplication to recite at times of distress and grief: Allahu Rabbi la ushriku bihi shay'an (Allah is my Lord, I do not associate anything with Him).
Hadith 5574
عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَعَوَاتُ الْمَكْرُوبِ اللَّهُمَّ رَحْمَتَكَ أَرْجُو فَلَا تَكِلْنِي إِلَى نَفْسِي طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ أَصْلِحْ لِي شَأْنِي كُلَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: The supplication of a restless and distressed person is this: "O Allah! I hope for Your mercy alone, so do not leave me to myself even for the blink of an eye, and set right all of my affairs. There is no deity except You." (O Allah! I hope only for Your mercy, so do not entrust me to myself even for the blink of an eye, and set right all of my affairs; You alone are the True Deity.)
Hadith 5575
عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ وَفِي لَفْظٍ لَقَّنَنِي عَلَّمَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا نَزَلَ بِي كَرْبٌ زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ أَوْ شِدَّةٌ أَنْ أَقُولَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْحَلِيمُ الْكَرِيمُ وَفِي لَفْظٍ الْحَكِيمُ بَدَلَ الْحَلِيمِ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَتَبَارَكَ اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abu Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me to recite this supplication in times of anxiety and hardship: LAA ILAAHA ILLALLAHUL HALEEMUL KAREEM, SUBHAANALLAHI WATABAARAKALLAHU RABBUL ARSHIL AZEEM, WALHAMDU LILLAAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN (There is no true deity except Allah, the Forbearing, the Generous; Allah is Pure, Allah is Blessed, the Lord of the Mighty Throne, and all praise is for Allah, the Lord of the worlds). In one narration, instead of AL-HALEEM, the word AL-HAKEEM is used.
Hadith 5576
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا أَصَابَ أَحَدًا قَطُّ هَمٌّ وَلَا حَزَنٌ فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي عَبْدُكَ وَابْنُ عَبْدِكَ وَابْنُ أَمَتِكَ نَاصِيَتِي بِيَدِكَ مَاضٍ فِيَّ حُكْمُكَ عَدْلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤُكَ أَسْأَلُكَ بِكُلِّ اسْمٍ هُوَ لَكَ سَمَّيْتَ بِهِ نَفْسَكَ أَوْ عَلَّمْتَهُ أَحَدًا مِنْ خَلْقِكَ أَوْ أَنْزَلْتَهُ فِي كِتَابِكَ أَوِ اسْتَأْثَرْتَ بِهِ فِي عِلْمِ الْغَيْبِ عِنْدَكَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ الْقُرْآنَ رَبِيعَ قَلْبِي وَنُورَ صَدْرِي وَجِلَاءَ حُزْنِي وَذَهَابَ هَمِّي إِلَّا أَذْهَبَ اللَّهُ هَمَّهُ وَحُزْنَهُ وَأَبْدَلَهُ مَكَانَهُ فَرَجًا قَالَ فَقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَلَا نَتَعَلَّمُهَا فَقَالَ بَلَى يَنْبَغِي لِمَنْ سَمِعَهَا أَنْ يَتَعَلَّمَهَا
Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whenever anyone is afflicted with worry, grief, or distress and he recites this supplication: “O Allah! I am Your servant, the son of Your servant, and the son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is ever executed, and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You have named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept with Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen, that You make the Qur’an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my grief, and the dispeller of my anxiety.” Then Allah Almighty will remove his worry, grief, and distress, and in its place grant him relief and ease. It was asked: O Messenger of Allah! Should we not learn these words? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, everyone who hears them should memorize them.
Hadith 5577
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ أَنَّهُ زَوَّجَ ابْنَتَهُ مِنَ الْحَجَّاجِ بْنِ يُوسُفَ فَقَالَ لَهَا إِذَا دَخَلَ بِكِ فَقُولِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْحَلِيمُ الْكَرِيمُ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ وَزَعَمَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا حَزَبَهُ أَمْرٌ قَالَ هَذَا قَالَ حَمَّادٌ ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ فَلَمْ يَصِلْ إِلَيْهَا
It is narrated from Abdullah bin Ja'far, he says: When he married his daughter to Hajjaj bin Yusuf, he said to his daughter: When he comes to you, you should recite this supplication: LAA ILAAHA ILLALLAHUL HALEEMUL KAREEM, SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL 'ARSHIL 'AZEEM, ALHAMDULILLAAHI RABBIL 'AALAMEEN. He thought that whenever any matter would distress the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite this supplication. Hammad, the narrator, says: I think that Hajjaj bin Yusuf did not reach that woman.
Hadith 5578
عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قُلْنَا يَوْمَ الْخَنْدَقِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ نَقُولُهُ فَقَدْ بَلَغَتِ الْقُلُوبُ الْحَنَاجِرَ قَالَ نَعَمْ اللَّهُمَّ اسْتُرْ عَوْرَاتِنَا وَآمِنْ رَوْعَاتِنَا قَالَ فَضَرَبَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وُجُوهَ أَعْدَائِهِ بِالرِّيحِ فَهَزَمَهُمُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِالرِّيحِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: On the day of the battle, we said: O Messenger of Allah! Is there any supplication, our hearts have reached our mouths? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Absolutely, say: "Allahumma astur 'awratina, wa amin raw'atina" (O Allah! Conceal our faults and grant us security from our fears). Then Allah Almighty sent such a wind upon the enemies that through that wind He defeated them.
Hadith 5579
عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَهُمْ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَضَى بَيْنَ رَجُلَيْنِ فَقَالَ الْمَقْضِيُّ عَلَيْهِ لَمَّا أَدْبَرَ حَسْبِيَ اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ رُدُّوا عَلَيَّ الرَّجُلَ فَقَالَ مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ قُلْتُ حَسْبِيَ اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَلُومُ عَلَى الْعَجْزِ وَلَكِنْ عَلَيْكَ بِالْكَيْسِ فَإِذَا غَلَبَكَ أَمْرٌ فَقُلْ حَسْبِيَ اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) judged between two men. The one against whom the judgment was passed, when he was leaving, said: "Hasbiyallahu wa ni‘mal wakeel" (Allah is sufficient for me and He is the best disposer of affairs). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bring that man to me. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: What did you say? He replied: Yes, I uttered these words: "Hasbiyallahu wa ni‘mal wakeel." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah the Exalted blames laziness. First, you should act with wisdom, then if something overcomes you, then you should say: "Hasbiyallahu wa ni‘mal wakeel."
