It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When you hear the crowing of a rooster at night, then ask Allah for His bounty, for it has seen an angel. And when you hear the braying of a donkey, then seek refuge with Allah from Satan, for it has seen a devil.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you hear the barking of dogs or the braying of donkeys at night, seek refuge with Allah, for they see things which you do not see. When people have gone to sleep, do not go outside, for Allah the Exalted spreads various creatures during the night. And close the doors by mentioning the name of Allah, for Satan does not open a door that has been closed with the name of Allah. Tie the mouths of water skins, cover the pitchers, and turn the vessels upside down.
