Chapter on What Is Said at Bedtime in Case of Fear, Sleeplessness, and Loneliness
Hadith 5548
عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُعَلِّمُنَا كَلِمَاتٍ نَقُولُهُنَّ عِنْدَ النَّوْمِ مِنَ الْفَزَعِ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ غَضَبِهِ وَعِقَابِهِ وَشَرِّ عِبَادِهِ وَمِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَأَنْ يَحْضُرُونِ قَالَ فَكَانَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا يُعَلِّمُهَا مَنْ بَلَغَ مِنْ وَلَدِهِ أَنْ يَقُولَهَا عِنْدَ نَوْمِهِ وَمَنْ كَانَ مِنْهُمْ صَغِيرًا لَا يَعْقِلُ أَنْ يَحْفَظَهَا كَتَبَهَا لَهُ فَعَلَّقَهَا فِي عُنُقِهِ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach us these words to recite in case of anxiety at the time of sleep: Bismillah, I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah... and from their presence (In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His wrath, His punishment, the evil of His servants, the whisperings of devils, and from their presence near me). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) used to teach this supplication to his grown-up children so that they would recite it at bedtime, and for the younger children who were unable to memorize it, he would write it down and hang it around their necks.
