Chapter on What Is Said in the Morning and Evening and When Intending to Sleep
Hadith 5486

عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَمَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ أَقُولَ إِذَا أَصْبَحْتُ وَإِذَا أَمْسَيْتُ وَإِذَا أَخَذْتُ مَضْجَعِي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ اللَّهُمَّ فَاطِرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ عَالِمَ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ أَنْتَ رَبُّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَمَلِيكُهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ وَحْدَكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُكَ وَرَسُولُكَ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ نَفْسِي وَشَرِّ الشَّيْطَانِ وَشِرْكِهِ وَأَنْ أَقْتَرِفَ عَلَى نَفْسِي سُوءًا أَوْ أَجُرَّهُ إِلَى مُسْلِمٍ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded me to recite these words in the morning, in the evening, and when going to bed at night: "O Allah! Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen! You are the Lord and Owner of everything. I bear witness that there is no true deity except You; You are alone, You have no partner, and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is Your servant and Messenger. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my own self, from the evil of Satan and his polytheism, from committing evil against my own soul, or bringing it upon a Muslim."
Hadith 5487
عَنْ أَبِي رَاشِدٍ الْحُبْرَانِيِّ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا فَقُلْتُ لَهُ حَدِّثْنَا مَا سَمِعْتَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَلْقَى بَيْنَ يَدَيَّ صَحِيفَةً فَقَالَ هَذَا مَا كَتَبَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَنَظَرْتُ فِيهَا فَإِذَا فِيهَا أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقَ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عَلِّمْنِي مَا أَقُولُ إِذَا أَصْبَحْتُ وَإِذَا أَمْسَيْتُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ قُلْ اللَّهُمَّ فَاطِرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ عَالِمَ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ رَبَّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَمَلِيكَهُ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ نَفْسِي وَمِنْ شَرِّ الشَّيْطَانِ وَشِرْكِهِ وَأَنْ أَقْتَرِفَ عَلَى نَفْسِي سُوءًا أَوْ أَجُرَّهُ إِلَى مُسْلِمٍ
Abu Rashid Habraani says: I came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Relate to me the hadith you have heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He placed a scroll before me and said: This is what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had written for me. When I looked into it, it was written in it that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach me a supplication which I may recite in the morning and evening. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu Bakr! Recite this supplication: "O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, there is no deity except You, Lord of everything and its Sovereign. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my own self, from the evil of Satan and his association (with You), and from committing evil against myself or bringing it upon a Muslim." (O Allah! Creator of the heavens and the earth! Knower of the unseen and the seen! Lord and Owner of everything! I seek Your protection from the evil of my own self, from the evil of Satan and his association, from committing evil against myself, or from bringing evil upon a Muslim.)
Hadith 5488
عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ قَالَ إِذَا صَلَّى الصُّبْحَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ عَشْرَ مَرَّاتٍ كُنَّ كَعَدْلِ أَرْبَعِ رِقَابٍ وَكُتِبَ لَهُ بِهِنَّ عَشْرُ حَسَنَاتٍ وَمُحِيَ عَنْهُ بِهِنَّ عَشْرُ سَيِّئَاتٍ وَرُفِعَ لَهُ بِهِنَّ عَشْرُ دَرَجَاتٍ وَكُنَّ لَهُ حَرَسًا مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ حَتَّى يُمْسِيَ وَإِذَا قَالَهَا بَعْدَ الْمَغْرِبِ فَمِثْلُ ذَلِكَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever, after performing the Fajr prayer, recites this supplication ten times: LAA ILAAHA ILLALLAHU WAHDAHU LAA SHAREEKA LAHU, LAHUL-MULKU WA LAHUL-HAMDU WA HUWA ‘ALAA KULLI SHAY’IN QADEER. He will receive the reward equal to freeing four slaves, ten good deeds will be written for him, ten of his sins will be erased, his ten ranks will be elevated, these words will serve as a protection from Satan for him until the evening, and if he recites them ten times after Maghrib, he will attain the same virtue.
Hadith 5489
عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ لَمَّا قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ نَزَلَ عَلَيَّ فَقَالَ لِي يَا أَبَا أَيُّوبَ أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكَ قَالَ قُلْتُ بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَقُولُ حِينَ يُصْبِحُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ إِلَّا كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَهُ بِهَا عَشْرَ حَسَنَاتٍ وَمَحَا عَنْهُ عَشْرَ سَيِّئَاتٍ وَإِلَّا كُنَّ لَهُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ عَدْلَ عَشْرِ رِقَابٍ مُحَرَّرِينَ وَإِلَّا كَانَ فِي جُنَّةٍ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ حَتَّى يُمْسِيَ وَلَا قَالَهَا حِينَ يُمْسِي إِلَّا كَذَلِكَ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ لِأَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَهَا مِنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ قَالَ وَاللَّهِ لَسَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ يُحَدِّثُهُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, he stayed with me and said to me: O Abu Ayyub! Shall I teach you something? I said: Yes, of course, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever recites these words in the morning: LAA ILAAHA ILLALLAHU WAHDAHU LAA SHAREEKA LAHU, LAHUL-MULKU WA LAHUL-HAMDU, Allah writes ten good deeds for him, forgives ten of his sins, he receives the reward of freeing ten slaves in the sight of Allah, and he remains protected from Satan until the evening. And whoever recites these words in the evening will also receive the same virtue. Abu al-Ward says: I said to Abu Muhammad: Did you hear this hadith from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him)? He said: By Allah! I heard Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) narrating this hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 5490
عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ مَنْ قَالَ حِينَ يُصْبِحُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ عَشْرَ مَرَّاتٍ كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَهُ بِكُلِّ وَاحِدَةٍ قَالَهَا عَشْرَ حَسَنَاتٍ وَحَطَّ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ بِهَا عَشْرَ سَيِّئَاتٍ وَرَفَعَهُ اللَّهُ بِهَا عَشْرَ دَرَجَاتٍ وَكُنَّ لَهُ كَعَشْرِ رِقَابٍ وَكُنَّ لَهُ مَسْلَحَةً مِنْ أَوَّلِ النَّهَارِ إِلَى آخِرِهِ وَلَمْ يَعْمَلْ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَمَلًا يَقْهَرُهُنَّ فَإِنْ قَالَ حِينَ يُمْسِي فَمِثْلُ ذَلِكَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever recites these words ten times in the morning: LAA ILAAHA ILLALLAHU WAHDAHU LAA SHAREEKA LAHU, LAHUL-MULKU WA LAHUL-HAMDU YUHYEE WA YUMEETU WA HUWA ‘ALAA KULLI SHAY’IN QADEER, Allah Almighty will write ten good deeds for him in return for each recitation, forgive ten of his sins, raise him by ten degrees, grant him the reward equal to freeing ten slaves, and these words will be a weapon and protection for him from the beginning to the end of the day. No one’s deed will surpass his deed on that day, and if he performs this act in the evening, he will receive the same virtue.
Hadith 5491
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ قَالَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ مَنْ قَالَهَا عَشْرَ مَرَّاتٍ حِينَ يُصْبِحُ كُتِبَ لَهُ بِهَا مِائَةُ حَسَنَةٍ وَمُحِيَ عَنْهُ بِهَا مِائَةُ سَيِّئَةٍ وَكَانَتْ لَهُ عَدْلَ رَقَبَةٍ وَحُفِظَ بِهَا يَوْمَئِذٍ حَتَّى يُمْسِيَ وَمَنْ قَالَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ حِينَ يُمْسِي كَانَ لَهُ مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever says this phrase ten times in the morning: "There is no god but Allah, alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is over all things powerful," one hundred good deeds will be written for him, one hundred of his sins will be erased, he will receive the reward of freeing a slave, and he will be protected until the evening. Whoever recites these words in the evening will also receive the same virtue.
Hadith 5492
عَنْ سُهَيْلِ بْنِ أَبِي صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَيَّاشٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ قَالَ حِينَ أَصْبَحَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ كَانَ لَهُ كَعَدْلِ رَقَبَةٍ مِنْ وَلَدِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَكُتِبَ لَهُ بِهَا عَشْرُ حَسَنَاتٍ وَحُطَّ عَنْهُ بِهَا عَشْرُ سَيِّئَاتٍ وَرُفِعَتْ لَهُ بِهَا عَشْرُ دَرَجَاتٍ وَكَانَ فِي حِرْزٍ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ حَتَّى يُمْسِيَ وَإِذَا أَمْسَى مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ قَالَ فَرَأَى رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِيمَا يَرَى النَّائِمُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَبَا عَيَّاشٍ يَرْوِي عَنْكَ كَذَا وَكَذَا قَالَ صَدَقَ أَبُو عَيَّاشٍ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyash (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever recites these words in the morning: LAA ILAAHA ILLALLAHU WAHDAHU LAA SHAREEKA LAHU, LAHUL-MULKU WA LAHUL-HAMDU WA HUWA ‘ALAA KULLI SHAY’IN QADEER, he will receive the reward equal to freeing a slave from among the descendants of Isma’il (peace be upon him), ten good deeds will be written for him, ten sins will be erased from him, his ten ranks will be elevated, and he will remain protected from Satan until the evening. If he does the same in the evening, he will receive the same virtue. A man saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in a dream and said to him: O Messenger of Allah! Abu Ayyash narrates such a hadith from you? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Abu Ayyash has spoken the truth.
Hadith 5493
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ قَالَ إِذَا أَمْسَى ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ لَمْ تَضُرَّهُ حُمَةٌ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ قَالَ فَكَانَ أَهْلُنَا قَدْ تَعَلَّمُوهَا فَكَانُوا يَقُولُونَهَا فَلُدِغَتْ جَارِيَةٌ مِنْهُمْ فَلَمْ تَجِدْ لَهَا وَجَعًا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever recites this supplication three times in the evening: "I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created," no poison will harm him that night. The narrator says: Our families learned this supplication and used to recite it; once a girl was bitten by something, but she did not suffer any harm from it.
Hadith 5494
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَسْلَمَ قَالَ لَمَّا نِمْتُ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةَ لَدَغَتْنِي عَقْرَبٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَا لَوْ قُلْتَ حِينَ أَمْسَيْتَ أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ لَمْ يَضُرَّكَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that a man from Banu Aslam said: When I slept last night, a scorpion stung me. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: If you had said in the evening, "I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created," it would not have harmed you.
Hadith 5495
عَنْ سُهَيْلِ بْنِ أَبِي صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَسْلَمَ أَنَّهُ لُدِغَ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَوْ أَنَّكَ قُلْتَ حِينَ أَمْسَيْتَ أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ لَمْ يَضُرَّكَ قَالَ سُهَيْلٌ فَكَانَ أَبِي إِذَا لُدِغَ أَحَدٌ مِنَّا يَقُولُ قَالَهَا فَإِنْ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ كَأَنَّهُ يَرَى أَنَّهَا لَا تَضُرُّهُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Salih (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man from Banu Aslam relates that he was bitten. When he informed the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you had recited this supplication in the evening: "A‘udhu bikalimatillahi-t-tammati min sharri ma khalaq" (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created), then it would not have harmed you. Suhail says: When any of us was bitten, my father would ask him: Did you recite that supplication? If he replied in the affirmative, it seemed that my father believed that it would not harm him.
Hadith 5496
عَنِ ابْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ قَالَ حِينَ يُصْبِحُ أَوْ حِينَ يُمْسِي اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ أَبُوءُ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ وَأَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي إِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ فَمَاتَ مِنْ يَوْمِهِ أَوْ مِنْ لَيْلَتِهِ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraidah that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever recites this dhikr in the morning or evening: "O Allah! You are my Lord, there is no true deity except You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I am, as much as I am able, steadfast upon the covenant and promise I made to You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favor upon me and I confess my sins, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You." Then, if he dies that day or night, he will enter Paradise.
Hadith 5497
عَنْ شَدَّادِ بْنِ أَوْسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَيِّدُ الِاسْتِغْفَارِ اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ وَأَبُوءُ لَكَ بِذَنْبِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي إِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ قَالَ مَنْ قَالَهَا بَعْدَمَا يُصْبِحُ مُوقِنًا بِهَا فَمَاتَ مِنْ يَوْمِهِ كَانَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ وَمَنْ قَالَهَا بَعْدَمَا يُمْسِي مُوقِنًا بِهَا فَمَاتَ مِنْ لَيْلَتِهِ كَانَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The chief of supplications for seeking forgiveness (Sayyid al-Istighfar) is this: "O Allah! You are my Lord, there is no deity except You. You created me, … … so forgive me, for surely none forgives sins except You." (O Allah! You are my Lord, there is no true deity except You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I am, as much as I am able, steadfast upon the covenant and promise I made to You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favor upon me and I confess my sins to You, so forgive me, for surely none forgives sins except You.) Whoever recites this supplication in the morning with firm belief and then dies during that day, he will be among the people of Paradise. And whoever recites it in the evening with firm belief and then dies during that night, he will be among the people of Paradise.
Hadith 5498
عَنْ أَبِي سَلَّامٍ قَالَ كُنَّا قُعُودًا فِي مَسْجِدِ حِمْصَ إِذْ مَرَّ رَجُلٌ فَقَالُوا هَذَا خَدَمَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ فَنَهَضْتُ فَسَأَلْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ حَدِّثْنَا بِمَا سَمِعْتَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ يَتَدَاوَلْهُ الرِّجَالُ فِيمَا بَيْنَكُمَا قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ مُسْلِمٍ يَقُولُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ حِينَ يُمْسِي أَوْ يُصْبِحُ وَفِي لَفْظٍ حِينَ يُصْبِحُ وَحِينَ يُمْسِي رَضِيتُ بِاللَّهِ رَبًّا وَبِالْإِسْلَامِ دِينًا وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيًّا إِلَّا كَانَ حَقًّا عَلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَنْ يُرْضِيَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
It is narrated from Abu Salam, he says: We were sitting in the mosque of Homs when a man passed by. The people said: This man has served the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Upon hearing this, I got up and said to him: Narrate to me a hadith which you have heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and between you and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, there is no intermediary. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: Whoever in the morning and evening three times recites this remembrance: "I am pleased with Allah as my Lord, with Islam as my religion, and with Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as my Prophet," then it becomes incumbent upon Allah to please him on the Day of Resurrection.
Hadith 5499
عَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ بِمِثْلِهِ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ يَقُولُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ وَثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ إِذَا أَمْسَى
. (Second chain) A similar hadith is narrated, however, there is a little more detail in it as follows: Say it three times in the morning and three times in the evening.
Hadith 5500
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبْزَى عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ وَإِذَا أَمْسَى أَصْبَحْنَا عَلَى فِطْرَةِ الْإِسْلَامِ وَعَلَى كَلِمَةِ الْإِخْلَاصِ وَعَلَى دِينِ نَبِيِّنَا مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعَلَى مِلَّةِ أَبِينَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَنِيفًا مُسْلِمًا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Abza (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would enter the morning and evening, he would recite this supplication: "We have entered the morning upon the natural disposition of Islam, upon the word of sincerity, upon the religion of our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and upon the way of our father Ibrahim, upright and a Muslim, and he was not among the polytheists." (We have entered the morning upon the nature of Islam, upon the word of sincerity, upon the religion of our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), upon the way of our father Ibrahim (peace be upon him), who was upright, a Muslim, and was not among the polytheists.)
Hadith 5501
عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلُهُ وَزَادَ بَعْدَ قَوْلِهِ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَإِذَا أَمْسَيْنَا مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ
Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrated a similar hadith of the Prophet, except that after "min al-mushrikeen" these words were also narrated: And when we entered the evening, we would say the same way.
Hadith 5502
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ قَالَ حَدَّثَتْنِي جَارَةٌ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهَا كَانَتْ تَسْمَعُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ عِنْدَ طُلُوعِ الْفَجْرِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْقَبْرِ
It is narrated from Abdullah bin Qasim, he says: A neighbor of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told us that she used to hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting this supplication at the time of dawn: "O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave and from the trial of the grave."
Hadith 5503
عَنْ عُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنْ قَالَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ لَمْ تَفْجَأْهُ فَاجِئَةُ بَلَاءٍ حَتَّى اللَّيْلِ وَمَنْ قَالَهَا حِينَ يُمْسِي لَمْ تَفْجَأْهُ فَاجِئَةُ بَلَاءٍ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Whoever recites this supplication: BISMILLAHILLADHI LA YADURRU MA’ASMHI SHAY’UN FIL ARDI WA LA FIS SAMA’I WAHUWAS SAMEE’UL ALEEM (“In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing in the earth or the sky can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing”), whoever recites this supplication three times in the morning, then, insha’Allah, no sudden calamity will befall him until night; and similarly, whoever does this in the evening, then, insha’Allah, no sudden calamity will befall him until morning.
Hadith 5504
عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أَمْسَى قَالَ أَمْسَيْنَا وَأَمْسَى الْمُلْكُ لِلَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would enter the evening, he would recite this supplication: “We have entered the evening and the dominion has entered the evening belonging to Allah, and all praise is for Allah. There is no deity except Allah alone, He has no partner.”
Hadith 5505
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَقُولُ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ اللَّهُمَّ بِكَ أَصْبَحْنَا وَبِكَ أَمْسَيْنَا وَبِكَ نَحْيَا وَبِكَ نَمُوتُ وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would enter the morning, he would recite this supplication: "O Allah! By Your help we have reached the morning, by Your help we have reached the evening, by Your help we live, by Your help we die, and to You is the return." (O Allah! We have entered the morning by Your grace, entered the evening by Your grace, live by Your grace, will die by Your grace, and to You is the return.)
Hadith 5506
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا يَقُولُ لَمْ يَكُنْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَدَعُ هَؤُلَاءِ الدَّعَوَاتِ حِينَ يُصْبِحُ وَحِينَ يُمْسِي اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَافِيَةَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ فِي دِينِي وَدُنْيَايَ وَأَهْلِي وَمَالِي اللَّهُمَّ اسْتُرْ عَوْرَاتِي وَآمِنْ رَوْعَاتِي اللَّهُمَّ احْفَظْنِي مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيَّ وَمِنْ خَلْفِي وَعَنْ يَمِينِي وَعَنْ شِمَالِي وَمِنْ فَوْقِي وَأَعُوذُ بِعَظَمَتِكَ أَنْ أُغْتَالَ مِنْ تَحْتِي قَالَ يَعْنِي الْخَسْفَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never neglected to recite these words morning and evening: "O Allah! I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah! I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth. O Allah! Conceal my faults and keep me safe from my fears. O Allah! Protect me from in front of me, from behind me, from my right, from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your greatness from being destroyed from beneath me." (O Allah! I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah! I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, and my family and wealth. O Allah! Conceal my faults and grant me safety from my fears. O Allah! Protect me from in front of me, from behind me, from my right, from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your greatness from being destroyed from beneath me.) The narrator says that being destroyed from beneath means being swallowed up by the earth.
Hadith 5507
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ قَالَ حِينَ يُصْبِحُ وَحِينَ يُمْسِي سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ لَمْ يَأْتِ أَحَدٌ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بِأَفْضَلَ مِمَّا جَاءَ بِهِ إِلَّا أَحَدٌ قَالَ مِثْلَ مَا قَالَ أَوْ زَادَ عَلَيْهِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever recites these words one hundred (100) times in the morning and evening: "Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi," then on the Day of Resurrection, no one will bring a deed better than his, except for the one who has recited this remembrance as many times or more than him.
Hadith 5508
عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَأَنْ أَقْعُدَ أَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ وَأُكَبِّرُهُ وَأَحْمَدُهُ وَأُسَبِّحُهُ وَأُهَلِّلُهُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أُعْتِقَ رَقَبَتَيْنِ أَوْ أَكْثَرَ وَفِي لَفْظٍ أَرْبَعَ رِقَابٍ مِنْ وَلَدِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَمِنْ بَعْدِ الْعَصْرِ حَتَّى تَغْرُبَ الشَّمْسُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أُعْتِقَ أَرْبَعَ رِقَابٍ مِنْ وَلَدِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If I sit (after the Fajr prayer) until sunrise remembering Allah Almighty and proclaiming His greatness, praise, glorification, and declaration of His oneness, then this deed is more beloved to me than freeing two or more necks from among the descendants of Isma'il (peace be upon him). In one narration, four necks are mentioned. And if I do the same remembrance from the Asr prayer until sunset, then this deed is more beloved to me than freeing four necks from among the descendants of Isma'il (peace be upon him).
Hadith 5509
عَنْ سَهْلٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ لِمَ سَمَّى اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ خَلِيلَهُ الَّذِي وَفَّى لِأَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ كُلَّمَا أَصْبَحَ وَأَمْسَى فَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ حِينَ تُمْسُونَ وَحِينَ تُصْبِحُونَ حَتَّى يَخْتِمَ الْآيَةَ
Sahl narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Shall I tell you why Allah Almighty said about His friend Ibrahim, peace be upon him, that Ibrahim was loyal and fulfilled his duty? The reason was that he used to recite this remembrance morning and evening: {فَسُبْحَانَ اللّٰہِ حِینَ تُمْسُونَ وَحِینَ تُصْبِحُونَ} … So glorify Allah when you enter the evening and when you enter the morning.
Hadith 5510
عَنْ مَعْقِلِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنْ قَالَ حِينَ يُصْبِحُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ السَّمِيعِ الْعَلِيمِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ وَقَرَأَ الثَّلَاثَ آيَاتٍ مِنْ آخِرِ سُورَةِ الْحَشْرِ وَكَّلَ اللَّهُ بِهِ سَبْعِينَ أَلْفَ مَلَكٍ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى يُمْسِيَ إِنْ مَاتَ فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ مَاتَ شَهِيدًا وَمَنْ قَالَهَا حِينَ يُمْسِي كَانَ بِتِلْكَ الْمَنْزِلَةِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ma’qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever recites in the morning three times: "A‘udhu billahi as-sami‘il ‘alim min ash-shaytanir-rajim" and then recites the last three verses of Surah Al-Hashr, Allah Almighty will appoint seventy thousand angels who will continue to supplicate for mercy for him until the evening, and if he dies during the day, he will die the death of a martyr. And whoever recites this in the evening will also attain the same virtue until the morning.
Hadith 5511
عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ يَا أَبَتِ إِنِّي أَسْمَعُكَ تَدْعُو كُلَّ غَدَاةٍ اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَدَنِي اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي سَمْعِي اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَصَرِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ تُعِيدُهَا ثَلَاثًا حِينَ تُصْبِحُ وَثَلَاثًا حِينَ تُمْسِي وَتَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكُفْرِ وَالْفَقْرِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ تُعِيدُهَا حِينَ تُصْبِحُ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثًا حِينَ تُمْسِي قَالَ نَعَمْ يَا بُنَيَّ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَدْعُو بِهِنَّ فَأُحِبُّ أَنْ أَسْتَنَّ بِسُنَّتِهِ قَالَ وَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَعَوَاتُ الْمَكْرُوبِ اللَّهُمَّ رَحْمَتَكَ أَرْجُو فَلَا تَكِلْنِي إِلَى نَفْسِي طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ أَصْلِحْ لِي شَأْنِي كُلَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ
It is narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Abu Bakrah, he says: I said to my father: O my dear father! I hear you reciting these words three times every morning and evening: "O Allah! Grant me well-being in my body, O Allah! Grant me well-being in my hearing, O Allah! Grant me well-being in my sight, there is no deity except You." And likewise, every morning and evening I hear you reciting this supplication three times: "O Allah! I seek refuge in You from disbelief and poverty, O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, there is no deity except You." He said: Yes, O my beloved son! I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicating with these words, and I like to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Also, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The supplication of a distressed and sorrowful person is this: "O Allah! I hope for Your mercy, so do not leave me to myself even for the blink of an eye, and rectify all of my affairs, there is no deity except You."
