It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever takes an oath but makes an exception along with it, then he has the choice; if he wishes, he may enforce his oath, and if he wishes, he may not fulfill the requirement of the oath. This will not break his oath, or he said: There is no harm in it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Suwaid bin Hanzala (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: We set out to meet the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Wa’il bin Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him) was also with us. On the way, he was captured by the enemy, and the people felt hesitant to swear an oath on his behalf, but I swore that he is my brother. Because of this, the enemy released him. When we came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and I told him the whole story, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Among all of them, you are the one who fulfilled the oath the most and are the most truthful. You have spoken the truth, because a Muslim is the brother of a Muslim.
