بَابُ فِي الصَّفَاتِ الْمَمْدُوحَةِ وَالْمَدْمُوْمَةِ مِنْهَا
Chapter on the Praiseworthy and Blameworthy Qualities of Horses
Hadith 5187
عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ يُمْنَ الْخَيْلِ فِي شُقْرِهَا
Isa bin Ali narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Surely, the blessing of the horse is in the red horses.
Hadith 5188
عَنْ أَبِي وَهْبٍ الْجُشَمِيِّ وَكَانَتْ لَهُ صُحْبَةٌ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَسَمَّوْا بِأَسْمَاءِ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ وَأَحَبُّ الْأَسْمَاءِ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ وَأَصْدَقُهَا حَارِثٌ وَهَمَّامٌ وَأَقْبَحُهَا حَرْبٌ وَمُرَّةُ وَارْتَبِطُوا الْخَيْلَ وَامْسَحُوا بِنَوَاصِيهَا وَأَعْجَازِهَا أَوْ قَالَ وَأَكْفَالِهَا وَقَلِّدُوهَا وَلَا تُقَلِّدُوهَا الْأَوْتَارَ وَعَلَيْكُمْ بِكُلِّ كُمَيْتٍ أَغَرَّ مُحَجَّلٍ أَوْ أَشْقَرَ أَغَرَّ مُحَجَّلٍ أَوْ أَدْهَمَ أَغَرَّ مُحَجَّلٍ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Wahb Jashmi, may Allah be pleased with him, who had the honor of companionship, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Name yourselves after the names of the noble Prophets. The most beloved names to Allah Almighty are Abdullah and Abdur Rahman. The truest names are Harith and Hammam, and the most unpleasant names are Harb and Murrah. Keep horses ready for the protection of the borders, touch their foreheads and hindquarters, and put collars on them, but they should not be made of hemp. Take care of these types of horses: those with a blackish-red, that is, crimson color, with whiteness on their foreheads and legs; a white and red horse with whiteness on its forehead and legs; and a very black horse with whiteness on its forehead and legs.
Hadith 5189
عَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرَ مَعْنَاهُ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ وَلَا أَدْرِي بِالْكُمَيْتِ بَدَأَ أَوْ بِالْأَدْهَمِ قَالَ وَسَأَلُوهُ لِمَ فَضَّلَ الْأَشْقَرَ قَالَ لِأَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعَثَ سَرِيَّةً فَكَانَ أَوَّلَ مَنْ جَاءَ بِالْفَتْحِ صَاحِبُ الْأَشْقَرِ
. (Second chain) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, then he mentioned a hadith with the same meaning as the above hadith. Muhammad, the narrator, says: I could not know whether the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, mentioned the reddish-black horse first or the black horse. When people asked him why the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, gave preference to the white and red horse, he said that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had sent out an expedition, and the person who first brought the good news of victory was riding a horse of this kind.
Hadith 5190
عَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ خَيْرُ الْخَيْلِ الْأَدْهَمُ الْأَقْرَحُ الْأَرْثَمُ مُحَجَّلُ الثَّلَاثِ مُطْلَقُ الْيَمِينِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ أَدْهَمَ فَكُمَيْتٌ عَلَى هَذِهِ الشِّيَةِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The best horse is the one that is deep black, with a light whiteness on its forehead and whiteness on the upper lip, and three of its legs are white while the right leg is black. If a deep black horse is not available, then a reddish-black horse will suffice, but the rest of its characteristics should remain the same.
Hadith 5191
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَكْرَهُ الشِّكَالَ مِنَ الْخَيْلِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked a shikal horse.
