It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the prisoners were brought on the day of the Battle of Badr, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “None of them should escape except by paying ransom or by having their necks struck.” I (Abdullah) said: “O Messenger of Allah! Except Suhail bin Bayda, for I have heard him speaking about accepting Islam.” Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. I saw myself that day fearing more than anything else that stones might begin to fall upon me from the sky. (While I was in this state,) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Except Suhail bin Bayda.”

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a pickaxe and began to dig with it. Suddenly, a rock appeared in front. At that moment, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed.
