It is narrated from Raiyah Sahmi, he says: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, wrote a letter to me on a piece of red leather. I took that letter and repaired my bucket with it. Meanwhile, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent out an army. That army did not leave my camels, nor my livestock, nor my family, nor my wealth; rather, they took everything. I mounted my horse and fled naked; I had no clothes on me, until I reached my daughter, who was married among the Banu Hilal. She and her household had become Muslims, and people were sitting in a gathering in the courtyard of her house. So I circled around and entered upon my daughter from the back of the house. When she saw me, she threw clothes over me and said: What has happened to you? I said: Every kind of calamity has befallen your father; neither camels remain, nor livestock, nor family, nor wealth; rather, everything has been taken away. The daughter said: Have you not been invited to Islam? I replied: Where is your husband? She said: He is among the camels. So I went to him, and he said to me: What has happened to you? I said: Every kind of calamity has befallen me; my camels, livestock, family, and wealth, everything has been taken from me, and I want to hasten to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) so that my family and wealth are not distributed before I arrive. He said: Here is my she-camel with its saddle, take it. I said: I have no need for it. Then he took the shepherd’s camel and put water in a small leather waterskin as provision for the journey. I had so little clothing that if I covered my head, my buttocks would be exposed, and if I covered my buttocks, my face would be exposed, while I wished that no one would recognize me. Nevertheless, I reached Madinah, tied up the mount, and went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and stood before him. He was praying. When he finished the Fajr prayer, I said: O Messenger of Allah! Stretch out your hand, I want to pledge allegiance to you. He stretched out his hand, but when I tried to place my hand on his, he closed his hand. He did this three times, then on the third time he said: Who are you? I said: I am Raiyah Sahimi. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, took my arm, raised it, and said: O assembly of Muslims! This is Raiyah Sahimi, this is the one to whom I wrote a letter, and he repaired his bucket with that letter. Then I began to plead and said: O Messenger of Allah! My family and my wealth! He said: Your wealth has already been distributed, but from your family, take those whom you can. So I left from there, and my son recognized my mount and was standing by it. So I returned to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: This is my son. He said: O Bilal! Go and ask this boy if this is his father; if he answers in the affirmative, hand him over to him. Sayyiduna Bilal, may Allah be pleased with him, went to the boy and asked: Is this your father? He said: Yes. So he returned to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: O Messenger of Allah! I have not seen any father and son who wept as much upon meeting as these two. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: This is the harshness and roughness of the Bedouins.
