بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي اِعْطَاءِ الْمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبَهُمْ
Chapter on What Has Been Reported Regarding Giving to Those Whose Hearts Are to Be Reconciled
Hadith 5069
عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ نَاسًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ قَالُوا يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ حِينَ أَفَاءَ اللَّهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمْوَالَ هَوَازِنَ وَطَفِقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُعْطِي رِجَالًا مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ الْمِائَةَ مِنَ الْإِبِلِ كُلَّ رَجُلٍ فَقَالُوا يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُعْطِي قُرَيْشًا وَيَتْرُكُنَا وَسُيُوفُنَا تَقْطُرُ مِنْ دِمَائِهِمْ قَالَ أَنَسٌ فَحُدِّثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِمَقَالَتِهِمْ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى الْأَنْصَارِ فَجَمَعَهُمْ فِي قُبَّةٍ مِنْ أَدَمٍ وَلَمْ يَدْعُ أَحَدًا غَيْرَهُمْ فَلَمَّا اجْتَمَعُوا جَاءَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ مَا حَدِيثٌ بَلَغَنِي عَنْكُمْ فَقَالَتِ الْأَنْصَارُ أَمَّا ذَوُو رَأْيِنَا فَلَمْ يَقُولُوا شَيْئًا وَأَمَّا نَاسٌ حَدِيثَةٌ أَسْنَانُهُمْ فَقَالُوا كَذَا وَكَذَا لِلَّذِي قَالُوا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنِّي لَأُعْطِي رِجَالًا حُدَثَاءَ عَهْدٍ بِكُفْرٍ أَتَأَلَّفُهُمْ أَوْ قَالَ أَسْتَأْلِفُهُمْ أَفَلَا تَرْضَوْنَ أَنْ يَذْهَبَ النَّاسُ بِالْأَمْوَالِ وَتَرْجِعُونَ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ إِلَى رِحَالِكُمْ فَوَاللَّهِ لَمَا تَنْقَلِبُونَ بِهِ خَيْرٌ مِمَّا يَنْقَلِبُونَ بِهِ قَالُوا أَجَلْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَدْ رَضِينَا فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّكُمْ سَتَجِدُونَ بَعْدِي أَثَرَةً شَدِيدَةً فَاصْبِرُوا حَتَّى تَلْقَوْا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَإِنِّي فَرَطُكُمْ عَلَى الْحَوْضِ قَالَ أَنَسٌ فَلَمْ نَصْبِرْ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Allah Almighty gave the wealth of Hawazin to His Messenger as booty, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed this wealth among the Quraysh, giving each man one hundred camels, some of the Ansar said: May Allah forgive His Messenger, he is giving to the Quraysh and leaving us out, while our swords are still dripping with their blood. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) learned of their words, he called the Ansar and gathered them in a leather tent. No one except the Ansar was called. When they had gathered, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to them and said: Some words have reached me from your side, what is the matter? They said: Our wise people have not said anything like this, but some of our young people have said such things. Upon hearing this, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, I am giving this wealth to those people who have just recently left disbelief; I am reconciling their hearts. Are you not pleased that people go back with wealth, and you return to your homes with the Messenger of Allah? By Allah! What you are taking back is better than what they are taking. They said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! We are pleased. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: After me, you will see others being preferred over you and selfishness, so be patient until you meet Allah and His Messenger. Indeed, I will be at the Hawd (the Pond) before you. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: But we did not remain patient.
Hadith 5070
عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ تَغْلِبَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَتَاهُ شَيْءٌ فَأَعْطَاهُ نَاسًا وَتَرَكَ نَاسًا وَقَالَ جَرِيرٌ أَعْطَى رِجَالًا وَتَرَكَ رِجَالًا قَالَ فَبَلَغَهُ عَنِ الَّذِينَ تَرَكَ أَنَّهُمْ عَتِبُوا وَقَالُوا قَالَ فَصَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنِّي أُعْطِي نَاسًا وَأَدَعُ نَاسًا وَأُعْطِي رِجَالًا وَأَدَعُ رِجَالًا قَالَ عَفَّانُ قَالَ ذِي وَذِي وَالَّذِي أَدَعُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنَ الَّذِي أُعْطِي أُعْطِي أُنَاسًا لِمَا فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مِنَ الْجَزَعِ وَالْهَلَعِ وَأَكِلُ قَوْمًا إِلَى مَا جَعَلَ اللَّهُ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مِنَ الْغِنَى وَالْخَيْرِ مِنْهُمْ عَمْرُو بْنُ تَغْلِبَ قَالَ وَكُنْتُ جَالِسًا تِلْقَاءَ وَجْهِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ مَا أُحِبُّ أَنَّ لِي بِكَلِمَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حُمْرَ النَّعَمِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin Taghlib (may Allah be pleased with him) that some wealth was received by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave it to some people and did not give it to others. News reached him (peace and blessings be upon him) that those who were not given had criticized this. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit, praised and glorified Allah, and said: "Indeed, I give to some people and do not give to others. I grant to some men and leave others, but those whom I leave are more beloved to me than those to whom I give. I give to those whose hearts have anxiety, distress, impatience, and restlessness, and I entrust some people to the richness and goodness that Allah Almighty has placed in their hearts. And Amr bin Taghlib is among them." Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "I was sitting in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I would not like to have red camels in exchange for this statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."
