Chapter on the Permissibility of Granting Extra Shares to Some of the Army for Their Valor or Bearing Hardship
Hadith 5055
عَنْ سَلْمَةَ بْنِ الْأَكْوَعِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَذَكَرَ قِصَّةَ إِغَارَةِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْفَزَارِيِّ عَلَى سَرْحِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَاسْتِنْقَاذِهِ مِنْهُ قَالَ فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْنَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَيْرُ فُرْسَانِنَا الْيَوْمَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ وَخَيْرُ رِجَالَتِنَا سَلَمَةُ فَأَعْطَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَهْمَ الرَّاجِلِ وَالْفَارِسِ جَمِيعًا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him), then he mentioned the incident of ‘Abdur Rahman Fazari raiding the livestock of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and their protection. Sayyiduna Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When we reached the morning, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Today Abu Qatadah proved to be the best horseman and Salamah the best foot soldier.” Thus, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me the share of both the foot soldier and the horseman.
Hadith 5056
عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَدْ شَفَانِي اللَّهُ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَهَبْ لِي هَذَا السَّيْفَ قَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا السَّيْفَ لَيْسَ لَكَ وَلَا لِي ضَعْهُ قَالَ فَوَضَعْتُهُ ثُمَّ رَجَعْتُ قُلْتُ عَسَى أَنْ يُعْطَى هَذَا السَّيْفَ الْيَوْمَ مَنْ لَمْ يُبْلِ بَلَائِي قَالَ إِذَا رَجُلٌ يَدْعُونِي مِنْ وَرَائِي قَالَ قُلْتُ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ فِيَّ شَيْءٌ قَالَ كُنْتَ سَأَلْتَنِي السَّيْفَ وَلَيْسَ هُوَ لِي وَإِنَّهُ قَدْ وُهِبَ لِي فَهُوَ لَكَ قَالَ وَأُنْزِلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْأَنْفَالِ قُلِ الْأَنْفَالُ لِلَّهِ وَالرَّسُولِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, Allah Almighty has granted me healing from the polytheists, so grant me this sword as a gift. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This sword is neither mine nor yours, so put it down here. So I put it down, then I returned and said: Perhaps this sword will be given to a servant who cannot display bravery like mine. Meanwhile, a man called me from behind, I said: It seems that a special command has been revealed about me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You had asked me for this sword, while it was not mine; now it has been gifted to me, therefore now it is yours. Then this verse was revealed: They ask you about the spoils (anfal); say, the spoils are for Allah and His Messenger.
