Hadith 4841
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Atik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever sets out from his home in the path of Allah for jihad, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured with his three fingers—that is, the middle finger, the index finger, and the thumb—(towards his life, his weapon, and his horse). That man said: And where are the mujahideen? Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: But if that man falls from his mount and dies, his reward is assured with Allah Almighty, or if an animal bites him, still his reward is assured with Allah Almighty, or if he dies a natural death, still his reward is assured with Allah Almighty. The narrator says: By Allah! This is such a statement that before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I never heard it from any Arab, and whoever among the mujahideen dies due to a blow, he has made a good refuge (i.e., Paradise) obligatory for himself.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There are two types of Jihad: (1) The person who seeks the pleasure of Allah Almighty, obeys the leader, spends good wealth, makes things easy for his companion, and avoids corruption—such a person's sleeping and waking, in short, everything is a source of reward. (2) The one who does Jihad out of pride and for show, disobeys the leader, and spreads corruption in the land—he will not return with any reward at all.

A man intends to perform jihad in the way of Allah, but in the meantime he also wants to acquire some worldly goods. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There is no reward for him. When this was hard for the people, they said to that man: Ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) again, perhaps he did not understand your question. He asked again and said: O Messenger of Allah! I am saying that a man intends to perform jihad in the way of Allah, but he also seeks worldly goods. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There is no reward for him. The man repeated the question a third time, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the same answer, saying: (I am saying that) there is no reward for him.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, who says: We were present with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the day of Khaybar. Regarding a man who claimed to be a Muslim, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "He is of the people of Hell." When we began to fight, that man fought very fiercely and was also wounded. Someone said: O Messenger of Allah! The man about whom you said he is of the people of Hell, today he fought very fiercely and now he has died. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "He has gone to the Fire." It was near that, because of this statement, some people would fall into doubt and suspicion. In any case, while people were in this state, someone said: That man has not died yet, but he has been severely wounded. When night fell, the man could not bear the pain of his wound and he committed suicide. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was informed about him, he said: "Allahu Akbar, I bear witness that indeed I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger." Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered Sayyiduna Bilal, may Allah be pleased with him, and he announced among the people that indeed the situation is such that only a Muslim soul will enter Paradise, and Allah, the Exalted, supports this religion even through a wicked man.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him), who says: There was a man with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in a certain battle. He displayed great bravery in the battle, and the Muslims were amazed at his courage. But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about him: Beware! Indeed, he is among the people of the Fire. We said: He is with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the path of Allah; in any case, Allah and His Messenger know best. The man left, and when the pain from his wounds became severe, he placed his chest on the edge of his sword and pressed down on it from above. A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: The man about whom you spoke in this way, I saw him moving, and the sword was embedded in his bones. Upon hearing this, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, a man continues to do the deeds of the people of Paradise, to the extent that it appears to the people (that he is of Paradise), while he is among the people of the Fire. Likewise, a man, according to the people, does the deeds of the people of the Fire, while he is among the people of Paradise. In reality, the outcome of deeds depends upon their conclusion.

I said to him: You should also come with me, indeed the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has sent me on an expedition. He said: I will not go with you. I asked: Why not? He said: Not until you fix three dinars for me. I said: I have just bid farewell to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), now I cannot return to him, anyway, come with us and you will get three dinars. So when I returned from my expedition, I informed the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: For him, from this expedition and from his world and Hereafter, there is nothing except these three dinars.
