Hadith 4760
عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ لَمَّا وُلِدَ الْحَسَنُ سَمَّيْتُهُ حَرْبًا فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أَرُونِي ابْنِي مَا سَمَّيْتُمُوهُ قَالَ قُلْتُ حَرْبًا قَالَ بَلْ هُوَ حَسَنٌ فَلَمَّا وُلِدَ الْحُسَيْنُ سَمَّيْتُهُ حَرْبًا فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أَرُونِي ابْنِي مَا سَمَّيْتُمُوهُ قَالَ قُلْتُ حَرْبًا قَالَ بَلْ هُوَ حُسَيْنٌ فَلَمَّا وُلِدَ الثَّالِثُ سَمَّيْتُهُ حَرْبًا فَجَاءَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أَرُونِي ابْنِي مَا سَمَّيْتُمُوهُ قُلْتُ حَرْبًا قَالَ بَلْ هُوَ مُحَسِّنٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ سَمَّيْتُهُمْ بِأَسْمَاءِ وَلَدِ هَارُونَ شَبَّرُ وَشَبِّيرُ وَمُشَبِّرٌ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, who says: When Hasan was born, I named him Harb. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came and said: Show me my son, what name have you given him? I said: Harb. He said: No, rather his name is Hasan. Then when Husayn was born, I named him Harb. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came and said: Show me my son, what name have you given him? I said: Harb. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: No, rather his name is Husayn. When the third child was born, I named him Harb. The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, came and said: Show me my son, what name have you given him? I said: Harb. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: No, rather he is Muhsin. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I have named these children after the names of the children of Harun, peace be upon him. Their names were: Shabbir, Shabbir, and Mushabbir.
Hadith 4761
عَنْ خَيْثَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ كَانَ اسْمُ أَبِي فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ عَزِيزًا فَسَمَّاهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ
Haisamah bin Abdur Rahman narrates from his father: In the era of ignorance, my father's name was Aziz, then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, changed his name to Abdur Rahman.
Hadith 4762
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ كَانَ اسْمُ جُوَيْرِيَةَ بَرَّةَ فَكَأَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَرِهَ ذَلِكَ فَسَمَّاهَا جُوَيْرِيَةَ كَرَاهَةَ أَنْ يُقَالَ خَرَجَ مِنْ عِنْدِ بَرَّةَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the name of Sayyidah Juwayriyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) was Barrah. It is as if the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked this name, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) named her Juwayriyyah, because he (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked that it be said that he (peace and blessings be upon him) came out from Barrah, ... . Hadith 4763
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ غَيَّرَ اسْمَ عَاصِيَةَ قَالَ أَنْتِ جَمِيلَةُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed the name of Asiyah and said: You are Jameelah.
Hadith 4764
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ كَانَ اسْمُ زَيْنَبَ بَرَّةَ فَسَمَّاهَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ زَيْنَبَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the name of Sayyidah Zainab was Barrah; the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, named her Zainab.
Hadith 4765
عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ جُهَيْنَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ يَا حَرَامُ فَقَالَ يَا حَلَالُ
A man from the Juhaina tribe narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a man calling out: O Haram! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Halal.
Hadith 4766
عَنْ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأَزْدِيِّ قَالَ جَاءَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ قُرْطٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا اسْمُكَ قَالَ شَيْطَانُ بْنُ قُرْطٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْتَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ قُرْطٍ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muslim bin Abdullah Azdi (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abdullah Qart Azdi (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "What is your name?" He replied: "Shaytan bin Qart." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "You are Abdullah bin Qart."
Hadith 4767
عَنْ لَيْلَى امْرَأَةِ بَشِيرِ ابْنِ الْخَصَاصِيَّةِ عَنْ بَشِيرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ وَكَانَ قَدْ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ اسْمُهُ زَحْمٌ فَسَمَّاهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَشِيرًا
Lady Laila (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of Sayyiduna Basheer bin Khasasiyyah (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates from her husband that he went to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), while his original name was Zahm. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) changed his name to Basheer.
Hadith 4768
عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِجَدِّهِ جَدِّ سَعِيدٍ مَا اسْمُكَ قَالَ حَزْنٌ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَلْ أَنْتَ سَهْلٌ فَقَالَ لَا أُغَيِّرُ اسْمًا سَمَّانِيهِ أَبِي قَالَ ابْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ فَمَا زَالَتْ فِينَا حُزُونَةٌ بَعْدُ
Ibn Musayyib narrates from his father that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked his grandfather: "What is your name?" He replied: "Huzn (hardship)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather you are Sahl (ease)." He said: "But the name my father has given me, I will not change it." Ibn Musayyib said: "So, harshness and roughness always remained in our family."
Hadith 4769
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَلَامٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَدِمْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَيْسَ اسْمِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلَامٍ فَسَمَّانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلَامٍ
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: When I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), my name was not Abdullah bin Salam, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) named me Abdullah bin Salam.
Hadith 4770
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ سَمِعَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلًا يَقُولُ لِرَجُلٍ مَا اسْمُكَ قَالَ شِهَابٌ فَقَالَ أَنْتَ هِشَامٌ
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a man ask another man: "What is your name?" He replied: "My name is Shahab." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are Hisham."
