Chapter on What Has Been Reported Regarding Riding the Sacrificial Camel
Hadith 4627
عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَمِّهِ قَالَ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَسُئِلَ يَرْكَبُ الرَّجُلُ هَدْيَهُ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ قَدْ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَمُرُّ بِالرِّجَالِ يَمْشُونَ فَيَأْمُرُهُمْ يَرْكَبُونَ هَدْيَهُ وَهَدْيَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَالَ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا شَيْئًا أَفْضَلَ مِنْ سُنَّةِ نَبِيِّكُمْ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Ubaidullah narrates from his uncle that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked whether a person can ride his sacrificial animal (hadi). He replied: There is no harm in it. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would pass by people who were walking and would instruct them to ride on my sacrificial animal and his own sacrificial animal. Then he said: There is nothing more virtuous for you to follow than the Sunnah of your Prophet.
Hadith 4628
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَأَى رَجُلًا يَسُوقُ بَدَنَةً قَالَ ارْكَبْهَا وَيْحَكَ قَالَ إِنَّهَا بَدَنَةٌ قَالَ ارْكَبْهَا وَيْحَكَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw a man driving a sacrificial camel. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: May you perish, ride on it. He said: This is a sacrificial animal. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: O may you perish, ride on it.
Hadith 4629
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ بِنَحْوِهِ وَزَادَ قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ يُسَايِرُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَفِي عُنُقِهَا نَعْلٌ
(Second chain) A similar hadith is narrated, except that in it: Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Then I saw that servant walking alongside the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and there was a shoe hanging from the neck of his mount.
Hadith 4630
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِنَحْوِهِ بِدُونِ الزِّيَادَةِ
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) has also narrated a similar hadith from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), however, it does not contain the additional wording found in the other narration.
Hadith 4631
عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا وَقَدْ سُئِلَ عَنْ رُكُوبِ الْهَدْيِ فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ ارْكَبْهَا بِالْمَعْرُوفِ إِذَا أُلْجِئْتَ إِلَيْهَا حَتَّى تَجِدَ ظَهْرًا
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about riding the sacrificial animal. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: If you are compelled, then ride it in a customary manner until you find another mount.
