Chapter on Departing from Mina for Tawaf on the Day of Sacrifice, Known as Tawaf al-Ifadah

Hadith 4540
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَفَاضَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَصَلَّى الظُّهْرَ بِمِنَى
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Tawaf al-Ifadah on the Day of Sacrifice, then returned and offered the Zuhr prayer in Mina.

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَعَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَا: أَفَاضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ مِنَى لَيْلًا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas and Sayyidah Aisha that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed the Tawaf al-Ifadah at night after coming from Mina.

(وَعَنْهُمَا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ زَارَ الْبَيْتَ لَيْلًا
(Second chain) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, performed the Tawaf of Ziyarat of the House of Allah at night.

(وَعَنْهُمَا مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَالِثٍ) أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَخَّرَ طَوَافَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ إِلَى اللَّيْلِ
(Third chain) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, delayed the Tawaf of the Day of Sacrifice until the night.

قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ قَالَ: أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ وَحَدَّثَتْنِي أُمُّ قَيْسٍ بِنْتُ مِحْصَنٍ وَكَانَتْ جَارَةً لَهُمْ قَالَتْ: خَرَجَ مِنْ عِنْدِي عُكَاشَةُ بْنُ مِحْصَنٍ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ بَنِي أَسَدٍ مُتَقَمِّصِينَ عَشِيَّةَ يَوْمِ النَّحْرِ ثُمَّ رَجَعُوا إِلَيَّ عِشَاءً قُمُصُهُمْ عَلَى أَيْدِيهِمْ يَحْمِلُونَهَا قَالَتْ: فَقُلْتُ: أَيْ عُكَاشَةُ! مَالَكُمْ خَرَجْتُمْ مُتَقَمِّصِينَ ثُمَّ رَجَعْتُمْ وَقُمُصُكُمْ عَلَى أَيْدِيكُمْ تَحْمِلُونَهَا؟ فَقَالَ: أَخْبَرَتْنَا أُمُّ قَيْسٍ: كَانَ هَذَا يَوْمًا قَدْ رُخِّصَ لَنَا فِيهِ إِذَا نَحْنُ رَمَيْنَا الْجَمْرَةَ حَلَلْنَا مِنْ كُلِّ مَا حَرُمْنَا مِنْهُ إِلَّا مَا كَانَ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ حَتَّى نَطُوفَ بِالْبَيْتِ فَإِذَا أَمْسَيْنَا وَلَمْ نَطُفْ بِهِ صِرْنَا حُرُمًا كَهَيْئَتِنَا قَبْلَ أَنْ نَرْمِيَ الْجَمْرَةَ حَتَّى نَطُوفَ بِهِ وَلَمْ نَطُفْ فَجَعَلْنَا قُمُصَنَا كَمَا تَرَيْنَ
Abu Ubaidah says: My neighbor, Sayyida Umm Qais bint Mihsan (may Allah be pleased with her), said: Along with some individuals from Banu Asad, Sayyid Akasha bin Mihsan (may Allah be pleased with him) left from my place. These people were wearing shirts and it was the evening of the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr). But when these people returned at the time of Isha, they were carrying their shirts in their hands. I said: O Akasha! What happened to you people? When you left, you were wearing shirts, and when you returned, you were carrying your shirts in your hands? He said: Sayyida Umm Qais (may Allah be pleased with her) said: On this day of 10th Dhul-Hijjah, we have been given this concession that when we have stoned the Jamrah, then (because of Ihram) the prohibited things become lawful for us, except for wives; they become lawful after the Tawaf al-Ifadah. But if it happens that we are not able to perform Tawaf until the evening, then we will return in the same state of Ihram in which we were before stoning the Jamrah, and then we will remain in the state of Ihram until we perform the Tawaf of the House of Allah. Since we had not performed Tawaf, that is why we have kept our shirts in this manner, as you are seeing.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَمْعَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ وَعَنْ أُمِّهِ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا يُحَدِّثَانِهِ ذَلِكَ جَمِيعًا قَالَتْ: كَانَتْ لَيْلَتِي الَّتِي يَصِيرُ إِلَيَّ فِيهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَسَاءَ يَوْمِ النَّحْرِ قَالَتْ: فَصَارَ إِلَيَّ قَالَتْ: فَدَخَلَ عَلَيَّ وَهْبُ بْنُ زَمْعَةَ مَعَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ آلِ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ مُتَقَمِّصِينَ قَالَتْ: فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِوَهْبٍ: ((هَلْ أَفَضْتَ بَعْدُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ؟)) قَالَ: لَا وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! قَالَ: ((انْزِعْ عَنْكَ الْقَمِيصَ)) قَالَ: فَنَزَعَهُ مِنْ رَأْسِهِ وَنَزَعَ صَاحِبُهُ قَمِيصَهُ مِنْ رَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ قَالُوا: وَلِمَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ: ((إِنَّ هَذَا يَوْمٌ رُخِّصَ لَكُمْ إِذَا أَنْتُمْ رَمَيْتُمُ الْجَمْرَةَ أَنْ تَحِلُّوا يَعْنِي مِنْ كُلِّ مَا حُرِّمْتُمْ مِنْهُ إِلَّا مِنَ النِّسَاءِ فَإِذَا أَنْتُمْ أَمْسَيْتُمْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَطُوفُوا بِهَذَا الْبَيْتِ عُدْتُّمْ حُرُمًا كَهَيْئَتِكُمْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَرْمُوا الْجَمْرَةَ حَتَّى تَطُوفُوا بِهِ))
Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: On the evening of the Day of Sacrifice, because it was my night, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was to come to me, so he came to me. In the meantime, Sayyiduna Wahb bin Zam’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) also came to me, and with him was a man from the family of Abu Umayyah. Both of them were wearing shirts. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Wahb (may Allah be pleased with him): Abu Abdullah! Have you performed the Tawaf al-Ifadah? He replied: No, O Messenger of Allah! I swear by Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then take off your shirt. So he took off his shirt from his head, and his companion also took off his shirt from his head. Then they said: O Messenger of Allah! What is the reason for this? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: On this day, we have been given the concession that when you have stoned the Jamrah, you become lawful, meaning those things which were forbidden to you (because of Ihram) become permissible, except for wives. But if you have not performed the Tawaf of the House of Allah by the evening, then you will return to the same state of Ihram as before stoning the Jamrah, until you perform this Tawaf.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَمْعَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ وَعَنْ أُمِّهِ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا يُحَدِّثَانِهِ ذَلِكَ جَمِيعًا قَالَتْ: كَانَتْ لَيْلَتِي الَّتِي يَصِيرُ إِلَيَّ فِيهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَسَاءَ يَوْمِ النَّحْرِ قَالَتْ: فَصَارَ إِلَيَّ قَالَتْ: فَدَخَلَ عَلَيَّ وَهْبُ بْنُ زَمْعَةَ مَعَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ آلِ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ مُتَقَمِّصِينَ قَالَتْ: فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِوَهْبٍ: ((هَلْ أَفَضْتَ بَعْدُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ؟)) قَالَ: لَا وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! قَالَ: ((انْزِعْ عَنْكَ الْقَمِيصَ)) قَالَ: فَنَزَعَهُ مِنْ رَأْسِهِ وَنَزَعَ صَاحِبُهُ قَمِيصَهُ مِنْ رَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ قَالُوا: وَلِمَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ: ((إِنَّ هَذَا يَوْمٌ رُخِّصَ لَكُمْ إِذَا أَنْتُمْ رَمَيْتُمُ الْجَمْرَةَ أَنْ تَحِلُّوا يَعْنِي مِنْ كُلِّ مَا حُرِّمْتُمْ مِنْهُ إِلَّا مِنَ النِّسَاءِ فَإِذَا أَنْتُمْ أَمْسَيْتُمْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَطُوفُوا بِهَذَا الْبَيْتِ عُدْتُّمْ حُرُمًا كَهَيْئَتِكُمْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَرْمُوا الْجَمْرَةَ حَتَّى تَطُوفُوا بِهِ))
