Section on What Has Been Reported Regarding the Superiority of Shaving Over Trimming
Hadith 4529
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: حَلَقَ رِجَالٌ يَوْمَ الْحُدَيْبِيَةِ وَقَصَّرَ آخَرُونَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ الْمُحَلِّقِينَ)) قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ؟ قَالَ: ((يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ الْمُحَلِّقِينَ)) قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ؟ قَالَ: ((يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ الْمُحَلِّقِينَ)) قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ؟ قَالَ: ((وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ)) قَالُوا: فَمَا بَالُ الْمُحَلِّقِينَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ظَاهَرْتَ لَهُمُ الرَّحْمَةَ؟ قَالَ: ((لَمْ يَشُكُّوا)) قَالَ: فَانْصَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, who says: On the day of Hudaybiyyah, some people shaved their heads and some shortened their hair. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: May Allah have mercy on those who shave their heads. The people said: O Messenger of Allah! And those who shorten their hair? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: May Allah have mercy on those who shave their heads. The people said: O Messenger of Allah! And those who shorten their hair? He, peace and blessings be upon him, again said: May Allah have mercy on those who shave their heads. The people said: O Messenger of Allah! And those who shorten their hair? This time, he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: And may Allah have mercy on those who shorten their hair as well. The people said: O Messenger of Allah! What is the reason that you expressed greater mercy for those who shaved their heads? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: They did not have any doubt. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went away.
Hadith 4530
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلْمُحَلِّقِينَ)) فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: وَلِلْمُقَصِّرِينَ؟ فَقَالَ: ((اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلْمُحَلِّقِينَ)) فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ: وَلِلْمُقَصِّرِينَ؟ فَقَالَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ أَوِ الرَّابِعَةِ: ((وَلِلْمُقَصِّرِينَ))
(Second chain) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: O Allah! Forgive those who shave their heads. A man said: And for those who shorten their hair? The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: O Allah! Forgive those who shave their heads. That man said: And for those who shorten their hair? The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said the third and fourth time: And forgive those who shorten their hair as well.
Hadith 4531
عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَصْحَابَهُ حَلَّقُوا رُؤُوسَهُمْ عَامَ الْحُدَيْبِيَةِ غَيْرَ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ وَأَبِي قَتَادَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا فَاسْتَغْفَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِلْمُحَلِّقِينَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ وَلِلْمُقَصِّرِينَ مَرَّةً
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the year of Hudaybiyyah, except for Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions shaved their heads. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated for forgiveness three times for those who shaved their heads and once for those who shortened their hair.
Hadith 4532
عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ الْحُصَيْنِ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ جَدَّتِي تُحَدِّثُ أَنَّهَا سَمِعَتِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِمِنَى دَعَا لِلْمُحَلِّقِينَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ فَقِيلَ لَهُ: وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ؟ فَقَالَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ: ((وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ))
Yahya bin Husain says: I heard from my grandmother (Sayyida Umm Husain, may Allah be pleased with her) that she heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Mina supplicating three times for those who shaved their heads. Someone asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): And those who trim their hair? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the third time: And may Allah forgive those who trim their hair as well.
Hadith 4533
(وَمِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ جَدَّتِي تَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِعَرَفَاتٍ يَخْطُبُ يَقُولُ: ((غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لِلْمُحَلِّقِينَ)) ثَلَاثَ مِرَارٍ قَالُوا: وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ؟ فَقَالَ: ((وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ)) فِي الرَّابِعَةِ
His grandmother says: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say three times in the sermon at Arafat: Allah Almighty forgive those who shave their heads. The people said: And those who shorten their hair? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the fourth time: And also forgive those who shorten their hair.
Hadith 4534
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَالِثٍ) عَنْ جَدَّتِهِ قَالَتْ: سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: ((يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ الْمُحَلِّقِينَ يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ الْمُحَلِّقِينَ)) قَالُوا فِي الثَّالِثَةِ: وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ؟ قَالَ: ((وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ))
His grandmother says: I heard the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: May Allah have mercy on those who shave their heads, may Allah have mercy on those who shave their heads. The people said for the third time: And those who shorten their hair? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: And may He have mercy on those who shorten their hair as well.
Hadith 4535
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ الْمُحَلِّقِينَ)) قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ؟ قَالَ: ((رَحِمَ اللَّهُ الْمُحَلِّقِينَ)) قَالَ فِي الرَّابِعَةِ: ((وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: May Allah have mercy on those who shave their heads. The people said: O Messenger of Allah! And those who shorten their hair? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: May Allah have mercy on those who shave their heads. Finally, he, peace and blessings be upon him, said the fourth time: And may Allah have mercy on those who shorten their hair as well.
Hadith 4536
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلْمُحَلِّقِينَ)) قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ؟ قَالَ: ((اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلْمُحَلِّقِينَ)) قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ؟ قَالَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ: ((وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Allah! Forgive those who shave their heads. The people said: O Messenger of Allah! And those who shorten their hair? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Allah! Forgive those who shave their heads. They said: O Messenger of Allah! And those who shorten their hair? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Allah! Forgive those who shave their heads. The people said: And those who shorten their hair? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: And forgive those who shorten their hair as well.
Hadith 4537
عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ مَالِكِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: ((اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلْمُحَلِّقِينَ اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلْمُحَلِّقِينَ)) قَالَ: يَقُولُ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ: وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ أَوْ فِي الرَّابِعَةِ: ((وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ)) ثُمَّ قَالَ: وَأَنَا يَوْمَئِذٍ مَحْلُوقُ الرَّأْسِ فَمَا يَسُرُّنِي بِحَلْقِ رَأْسِي حُمْرُ النَّعَمِ أَوْ خَطَرًا عَظِيمًا
Narrated from Sayyiduna Malik bin Rabi’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Allah! Forgive those who shave their heads. O Allah! Forgive those who shave their heads. A man from the people said: And those who shorten their hair? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said the third or fourth time: And forgive those who shorten their hair as well. I (Malik) had shaved my head that day, and I was so happy because of this that I could not have been as happy even if I had received red camels or a large share.
Hadith 4538
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ وَابْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ قَالَا: ثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ حَبَشِيِّ بْنِ جُنَادَةَ قَالَ يَحْيَى: وَكَانَ مِمَّنْ شَهِدَ حَجَّةَ الْوَدَاعِ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلْمُحَلِّقِينَ)) قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ؟ قَالَ: ((اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلْمُحَلِّقِينَ)) قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ؟ قَالَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ: ((وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ))
Narrated by Sayyiduna Habshi bin Junadah (may Allah be pleased with him), who was present at the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Allah! Forgive those who have shaved their heads. The people said: O Messenger of Allah! And those who have trimmed their hair? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again said: O Allah! Forgive those who have shaved their heads. The people said: O Messenger of Allah! And those who have trimmed their hair? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said for the third time: And forgive those who have trimmed their hair as well.
Hadith 4539
عَنِ ابْنِ قَارِبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلْمُحَلِّقِينَ)) قَالَ رَجُلٌ: وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ؟ قَالَ فِي الرَّابِعَةِ: ((وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ)) يُقَلِّلُهُ سُفْيَانُ بِيَدِهِ قَالَ سُفْيَانُ: وَقَالَ فِي تِيكَ كَأَنَّهُ يُوَسِّعُ يَدَهُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qarib bin Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: O Allah! Forgive those who shave their heads. A man said: And those who shorten their hair? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said for the fourth time: And forgive those who shorten their hair as well. Sufyan was indicating with his hand towards smallness and scarcity, but when (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was mentioning those who shave their heads) he was indicating with his hand towards abundance.
