Abdullah bin Haneen says: I was with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas and Sayyiduna Miswar (may Allah be pleased with them both) at the place of Abwa. We were talking, and during the conversation, the topic came up whether a Muhrim (one in the state of Ihram) can wash his head or not. Sayyiduna Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He cannot wash it, but Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He can wash it. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) sent me to Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) with this message: Tell him that your nephew Abdullah sends you greetings and asks how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wash his head while in the state of Ihram. When I arrived there, I found him bathing between two pillars of a well, with a cloth as a screen. When I appeared before him, he lowered the cloth screen to his chest, so his face became visible to me. I saw that a man was standing and pouring water over his head. (When I asked how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wash his head while in the state of Ihram,) Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) gathered both his hands and wiped them over his entire head, front and back. When I returned and mentioned the whole matter, Sayyiduna Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): I will not debate with you again.
Hadith 4266
(Second chain) Abdullah bin Haneen says: Sayyiduna Miswar bin Makhrama (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) disagreed about whether a Muhrim can wash his head or not. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He can wash it, but Sayyiduna Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He cannot wash it. Both of them sent me to Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) so that I could ask him about this issue and return. When I went and asked him, he poured water on his head and moved his hands forward and backward, and then said: I had seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) do it in this way.
