بَابُ التَّلْبِيَةِ وَصِفَتِهَا وَأَحْكَامِهَا
Chapter: Talbiyah, Its Description, and Its Rulings
Hadith 4220
عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا كَانَ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((لَبَّيْكَ، اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ))، قَالَ نَافِعٌ: وَكَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ: وَزِدْتُ أَنَا لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ وَسَعْدَيْكَ، وَالْخَيْرُ فِي يَدَيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ وَالرَّغْبَاءُ إِلَيْكَ وَالْعَمَلُ
It is narrated from Nafi‘ that Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting the Talbiyah with these words: ((Labbayka, Allahumma Labbayk...)) (I am present, O Allah! I am present, You have no partner, I am present, all praise and blessings are for You, and sovereignty is also for You, You have no partner). Nafi‘ says: Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In this Talbiyah, I also add these words: ((Labbayka, Labbayka wa Sa‘dayka)) (I am present, I am present, and I am present, and all goodness is in Your hands, and desire and action are also towards You.)
Hadith 4221
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُهِلُّ مُلَبِّدًا، يَقُولُ: ((لَبَّيْكَ، اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ))، لَا يَزِيدُ عَلَى هَؤُلَاءِ الْكَلِمَاتِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had applied something to prevent his hair from scattering while in the state of Ihram, and he was reciting the Talbiyah with these words: ((Labbayk, Allahumma Labbayk, ...)) (Here I am, O Allah! Here I am, You have no partner, here I am, all praise and blessings are for You, and sovereignty is also for You, You have no partner.)
Hadith 4222
عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ (بْنِ مُزَاحِمٍ) عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: كَانَتْ تَلْبِيَةُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ، اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the words of Talbiyah of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were: "Here I am, here I am, O Allah, here I am. There is no partner with You, here I am. Surely all praise and blessings are Yours, and the kingdom (also), there is no partner with You."
Hadith 4223
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَ: كَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ إِذَا لَبَّى يَقُولُ لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، (فَذَكَرَ مِثْلَ الطَّرِيقِ الْأُولَى ثُمَّ قَالَ) وَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ انْتَهِ إِلَيْهَا، فَإِنَّهَا تَلْبِيَةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
. (Second chain) When Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) would recite the Talbiyah, he would say: "Labbayk, Allahumma Labbayk..." — (he mentioned the Talbiyah as in the first chain), then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Remain upon these words, for this is the Talbiyah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 4224
عَنْ أَبِي عَطِيَّةَ، قَالَ: قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا: إِنِّي لَأَعْلَمُ كَيْفَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُلَبِّي، قَالَ: ثُمَّ سَمِعْتُهَا تُلَبِّي تَقُولُ: لَبَّيْكَ، اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ
It is narrated from Abu Atiyyah that Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I know well how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite the Talbiyah. Abu Atiyyah said: Then I heard Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reciting the Talbiyah as follows: ((Labbayk, Allahumma Labbayk, La Sharika Laka Labbayk, Inna al-hamda wa al-ni‘mata laka wa al-mulk, la sharika lak.))
Hadith 4225
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: كَانَ مِنْ تَلْبِيَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَبَّيْكَ إِلَهَ الْحَقِّ))
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that in the Talbiyah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) these words were also included: ((Labbayka Ilaaha al-Haqq))
Hadith 4226
عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْمُزَنِيِّ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ يُحَدِّثُ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُلَبِّي بِالْحَجِّ وَالْعُمْرَةِ جَمِيعًا، فَحَدَّثْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ بِذَلِكَ فَقَالَ: لَبَّى بِالْحَجِّ وَحْدَهُ، فَلَقِيتُ أَنَسًا فَحَدَّثْتُهُ بِقَوْلِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، فَقَالَ: مَا تَعُدُّونَنَا إِلَّا صِبْيَانًا، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((لَبَّيْكَ عُمْرَةً وَحَجًّا))
Bakr bin Abdullah Muzani says: I heard Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) proclaimed the talbiyah for both Hajj and Umrah together. Then, when I informed Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) of this, he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) proclaimed the talbiyah only for Hajj. Later, when I met Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), I mentioned to him what Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had said. He replied: In reality, you people consider us only as children, whereas the truth is that I myself heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) proclaim the talbiyah in this way: ((Labbayka ‘umratan wa hajj-an)) (I am present for Umrah and for Hajj).
Hadith 4227
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي سَلْمَةَ أَنَّ سَعْدَ بْنَ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ سَمِعَ رَجُلًا يَقُولُ: لَبَّيْكَ ذَا الْمَعَارِجِ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّهُ لَذُو الْمَعَارِجِ وَلَكِنَّا كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا نَقُولُ ذَلِكَ
Syedna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) heard a man calling out the talbiyah in this way: “Labbayk Dha al-Ma’arij” (“Here I am, O Possessor of the Heights!”). Upon hearing this, Syedna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Indeed, Allah Almighty is the Possessor of the Heights, but the fact is that we did not use such words with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 4228
عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: مَنْ أَضْحَى يَوْمًا مُحْرِمًا مُلَبِّيًا حَتَّى غَرَبَتِ الشَّمْسُ غَرَبَتْ بِذُنُوبِهِ كَيَوْمِ وَلَدَتْهُ أُمُّهُ
Narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever spends a day in the state of Ihram, continuously reciting the Talbiyah until the sun sets, will be cleansed of his sins as if it were the day his mother gave birth to him.
