Hadith 4216
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: On the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage, we set out for Hajj with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I had put on the Ihram for Umrah and I did not have a sacrificial animal with me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Those who have a sacrificial animal with them should put on the Ihram for both Hajj and Umrah together, and they will open their Ihram after both. Meanwhile, I began menstruating. When the night of Arafah came, I said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that I had put on the Ihram for Umrah, so what will become of my Hajj now? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Uncover your head, comb your hair, abandon the Umrah, and put on the Ihram for Hajj. When I had performed Hajj, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed my brother, Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), so he took me to Tan’eem and I performed Umrah. This Umrah was in place of the Umrah for which I had previously put on Ihram.
Hadith 4217
Nafi’ narrates that the year Hajjaj came to Makkah Mukarramah to fight against Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), that year the sons of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), Abdullah and Salim, said to their father: There is a danger of war this year, so it is better that you do not go for Hajj, because there is a fear that due to the fighting you may not be able to reach the House of Allah. He said: If there is any obstacle in reaching the House of Allah, I will do as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did on that occasion when the disbelievers of Quraysh prevented him (peace and blessings be upon him) from going towards the House of Allah. Now I make you witnesses that I have intended ‘Umrah; if I am not prevented, I will perform ‘Umrah, and if I face an obstacle in reaching the House of Allah, I will do as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did, and at that time I was also with him (peace and blessings be upon him). After this, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) set out on his journey. When he reached Dhul-Hulaifah, he donned the Ihram for ‘Umrah and recited the Talbiyah. And he recited this verse: {لَقَدْ کَانَ لَکُمْ فِیْ رَسُوْلِ اللّٰہِ أُسْوَۃٌ حَسَنَۃٌ} (Surah Al-Ahzab: 21) “Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) you have a good example.” After this, he proceeded further, and when he reached above Bayda’, he said: The rulings of Hajj and ‘Umrah are the same; if there is an obstacle in my ‘Umrah, it would mean there will be an obstacle in my Hajj as well. Therefore, I make you witnesses that I am also donning the Ihram for Hajj along with ‘Umrah. After this, he proceeded further and, upon reaching Qudayd, bought a sacrificial animal. Then, upon reaching Makkah, he performed one Tawaf of the House of Allah and one Sa’i between Safa and Marwah for both Hajj and ‘Umrah. After that, he remained in this state until the Day of Sacrifice, i.e., the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah.
Hadith 4218
(Second chain) Nafi’ says: Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) set out with the intention of performing ‘Umrah. When he was informed that there was a danger of fighting in Makkah this time, he said: “I will enter into the state of Ihram for ‘Umrah. If I am prevented from proceeding further, I will do as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did.” So he entered into the state of Ihram for ‘Umrah, and when he had gone a little beyond Dhu’l-Hulayfah and reached the hill of Bayda’, he said: “The rulings of Hajj and ‘Umrah are the same, so I intend Hajj,” or he said: “I make you people witnesses that I intend Hajj, because the rulings and issues of Hajj and ‘Umrah are the same.” Thus, when he reached Makkah, he performed seven circuits around the House (Ka’bah) and seven circuits between Safa and Marwah, and said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) doing likewise.” On this journey, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) bought a sacrificial animal from the place of Qudayd and took it with him to Makkah Mukarramah.
Hadith 4219
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) had assumed the Ihram for Umrah, and the companions had assumed the Ihram for Hajj. According to the narration of Ruh, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and the companions had assumed the Ihram for Hajj. Those who did not have sacrificial animals with them became halal after performing Umrah, that is, they exited the state of Ihram. Sayyiduna Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) and another man were among those who did not have sacrificial animals, so they too became halal after performing Umrah.
