Hadith 4186
Salim bin Abi Al-Ja’d says: We set out for Hajj in the company of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). When we reached the place of Dhul-Hulaifah, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I intend to perform Hajj and Umrah together, so whoever wishes to do so should say as I say. Then he recited the Talbiyah as follows: “Labbayka bi-Hajjin wa ‘Umratin ma’an” (I am present, with both Hajj and Umrah together). Salim says that Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) told me this: By Allah! During the journey, my leg was touching the leg of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was reciting the Talbiyah for both Hajj and Umrah together.
Hadith 4187
Mutarrif says: Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: I will narrate to you a hadith, I hope that Allah Almighty will benefit you through it. The matter is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed Hajj and Umrah together, and then neither did he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbid it until he departed from this world, nor was any such part of the Noble Qur’an revealed that made it unlawful. Also, I, Imran, say: The angels of Allah used to greet me with salam, but when I cauterized (my wound of hemorrhoids for treatment), they stopped greeting me. Then, when I abandoned the act of cauterization, they started greeting me again.
Hadith 4188
Har Mas bin Ziyad says: I was sitting behind my father on a mount, and in that state I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, riding a camel and proclaiming the Talbiyah in this way: "Labbayka bi-Hajjatin wa 'Umratin ma'an." (I am present for both Hajj and 'Umrah together.)
Hadith 4189
Sayyiduna Abu Wa’il (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Sabi bin Ma’bad was a Bedouin man from Banu Taghlib. He was a Christian by religion, then he accepted Islam. After that, he asked: Which deed is the most virtuous? He was told: Striving in the path of Allah (Jihad). When he intended to perform Jihad, he was asked: Have you performed Hajj? He replied: No. He was told: First perform Hajj and Umrah, then do Jihad. So he set out for this purpose, and when he reached the place of Hawabit, he entered into the state of Ihram for both Hajj and Umrah. Zayd bin Suhan and Salman bin Rabee’ah, seeing him in this state, said: He is more astray than his camel, or he is not more rightly guided than his she-camel. Hearing this, he went to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and mentioned to him what both of them had said. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You have been granted the ability to act upon the Sunnah of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Hakam says: I asked Abu Wa’il: Did Sabi narrate this hadith to you? He said: Yes.
Hadith 4190
Narrated by Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Malik bin Ju'sham (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Until the Day of Resurrection, 'Umrah has been included in Hajj. Also, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) himself combined both of them in one Ihram on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage.
Hadith 4191
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the valley of Aqeeq saying: "Tonight, a messenger (an angel, i.e., Jibreel, peace be upon him) came to me from my Lord and said: Perform prayer in this blessed valley and say that this ‘Umrah is with Hajj." Waleed, the narrator, says: By valley is meant Dhul-Hulaifah.
Hadith 4192
Marwan bin Hakam says: I was present with Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them both) between Makkah Mukarramah and Madinah Munawwarah. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was forbidding Hajj Tamattu’ and combining Hajj and ‘Umrah in one Ihram. But when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saw this, he recited the Talbiyah for both together and said: “Labbayka bi ‘umratin wa hajj-in ma‘an” (I enter into Ihram for both ‘Umrah and Hajj together). Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do you see that I am forbidding people from doing this, and yet you are doing the same? Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: I will not abandon the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the basis of anyone’s statement.
Hadith 4193
(Second chain) Marwan says: We were going with Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) when a man was reciting the talbiyah for both Hajj and Umrah together. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Who is this? People informed that it is Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). So he said: Do you not know that I have prohibited this act? Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yes, I certainly know, but I cannot abandon the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the basis of your statement.
Hadith 4194
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) says: By Allah! We were with Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) at the place of Hajfah, and there was also a caravan from the people of Syria with him, among whom was Habib bin Maslamah Fahri. The mention of Hajj Tamattu‘ was made before Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), so he said: These two acts should not be performed in the months of Hajj. His opinion was that you should delay this ‘Umrah and visit the House of Allah twice, for that would be better, because Allah Almighty has now granted abundance in wealth and resources. At that time, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was grazing his camel in the valley. When this matter reached him, he said: Do you want to abolish the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the ease and concession given to the servants by Allah Almighty in the Noble Qur’an, and impose hardship upon them, and prevent them from a proven practice? This concession is for the needy and for those coming from distant places. Thereafter, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) recited the Talbiyah for both Hajj and ‘Umrah together. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) turned to the people and said: Did I prohibit the combining of the two? I did not prohibit doing so; it was merely an opinion of mine which I expressed. Now, whoever wishes may adopt it, and whoever wishes may leave it.
Hadith 4195
Bakr says: I said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) has told us that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the talbiyah in this way: "Labbayka bi-'umratin wa hajj" (I am present for both 'umrah and hajj). Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) has forgotten; the matter was that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out, he recited the talbiyah for hajj and we also recited the talbiyah for hajj, but when he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached Makkah Mukarramah, he said that those who do not have sacrificial animals with them should end their ihram after 'umrah. Bakr says: When I told this to Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: Actually, you consider us children (that is why you do not trust our words).
Hadith 4196
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever combines Hajj and Umrah in one Ihram, one Tawaf is sufficient for both.
Hadith 4197
Narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) combined Hajj and Umrah in one Ihram due to the fear that he might be prevented from reaching the House of Allah. Then he said: And it was his (peace and blessings be upon him) thought that if Hajj could not be performed, then at least Umrah would be completed.
Hadith 4198
Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the verse regarding Hajj Tamattu’ was revealed in the Noble Qur’an, and we acted upon it in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). After that, no such verse was revealed that abrogated this command, nor did the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibit it until he departed from this world.
Hadith 4199
Abu Jamrah Duba'i said: I wanted to perform Hajj Tamattu', but people forbade me from doing so. So I went to the service of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him about this matter. He instructed me to perform Hajj Tamattu'. So I set out towards the House of Allah and, upon reaching there, I fell asleep. In my dream, I saw that someone came to me and said: "This is an accepted Umrah and a righteous Hajj." I narrated my dream to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), and he, astonished, repeatedly said: "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar! This act is the Sunnah of Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said regarding the Hadi (sacrificial animal) that it can be a camel, a cow, a goat, or a sheep, or a share can be taken in one animal.
Hadith 4200
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna Umar, and Sayyiduna Uthman continued to permit Tamattu’ until they departed from this world. The first to prohibit it was Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was astonished at his forbidding Hajj Tamattu’, because he himself had narrated to me that he had trimmed his hair with the broad blade of an arrow in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 4201
Ghanim says: I asked Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) about Tamattu’, he said: We performed Tamattu’ (with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him) at a time when this (Sayyiduna) Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) had not yet accepted Islam in the houses of Makkah Mukarramah.
Hadith 4202
Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Harith says: I heard from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Dahhak bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) in the year when Sayyiduna Mu’awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) performed Hajj. Both of them were discussing Hajj Tamattu’. Dahhak said: Only a person who is ignorant of Allah Almighty’s command will perform this Hajj. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Nephew! You have said a very wrong thing. Then Sayyiduna Dahhak said: Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) also forbade it. Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and we performed Hajj Tamattu’ in his company.
Hadith 4203
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that both Nikah Mut'ah and Hajj Tamattu' were permitted during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) forbade us from them, we refrained.
Hadith 4204
Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give the fatwa permitting Hajj Tamattu’. A man said to him: Refrain from some of your fatwas, because you do not know what the Commander of the Faithful has decreed regarding the rites of Hajj after you. Later, Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) met Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him about this. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I know that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Companions performed Hajj Tamattu’, but I do not like that these people spend the night under the trees of Araak with their wives and then, when they set out for Hajj, drops of water from their ritual bath are dripping from their heads.
Hadith 4205
(Second chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Hajj Tamattu' is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but I fear that these people will have intercourse with their wives under the trees of 'Araak and then set out after donning the Ihram for Hajj.
Hadith 4206
It is narrated from Salim bin Abdullah bin Umar that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give the verdict of the permissibility of Hajj Tamattu’ according to the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When people would say to Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that your father forbade Hajj Tamattu’, then why do you oppose his command, he would reply to them: Woe to you, do you not fear Allah? If Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) forbade it, then his intention would also have been for good, that you perform ‘Umrah separately. Now why do you consider it unlawful, while Allah has made it lawful and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) acted upon it? Who is more deserving of being followed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) or the action of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) did not say to you that performing ‘Umrah in the months of Hajj is unlawful; rather, his statement was that a complete ‘Umrah is that you perform it separately, outside the months of Hajj.
Hadith 4207
Abu Nadrah narrates: He says, I said to Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) forbids Hajj Tamattu', and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) commands it. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This hadith regarding Hajj revolves in my hand; we performed Hajj Tamattu' with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and then with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr. When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became caliph, he addressed the people and said: Indeed, the Qur'an is the Qur'an and the Messenger of Allah is also the Messenger. The matter is that during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), there were two types of Mut'ah practiced: one was the Mut'ah of Hajj and the other was the Mut'ah with women.
Hadith 4208
It is narrated from Hasan that when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to prohibit Hajj Tamattu', Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "You cannot prohibit Hajj Tamattu', because we performed this Hajj in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not stop us from it." But Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) turned away from his statement and did not pay any attention to it. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to prohibit Yemeni cloaks because they were dyed with urine, but Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "You cannot prohibit this either, because the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also wore them and in his time we used to wear them."
Hadith 4209
It is narrated from Saeed bin Musayyib that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) met together in the valley of Usfan. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) used to prohibit Hajj Tamattu' and 'Umrah, but Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "You want to prohibit an act which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) himself performed." But he replied: "Please spare us from your statements."
Hadith 4210
Ishaq bin Yasar says: We were in Makkah when Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us and forbade performing Hajj Tamattu’ and he also denied that people had performed such a Hajj with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When this reached Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: What does Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) know about this? He should go and ask his mother, Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her), whether Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) did not end his Ihram and his mother did. When Sayyida Asma heard this, she said: May Allah forgive Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), he has said something inappropriate, but by Allah, he has spoken the truth. Indeed, the people had ended their Ihram and we had also ended our Ihram, and the people had also had intercourse with their wives.
Hadith 4211
Muslim Qari says: I asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) about Hajj Tamattu’, and he permitted it, but Sayyiduna Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) forbade it. Upon seeing this, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) forbids Hajj Tamattu’, while his mother states that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted it. Go and ask her. Muslim Qari says: So we went to her; she was a heavyset woman and had become blind. She stated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) indeed permitted it.
Hadith 4212
Abdullah bin Sharik Amiri says: I heard that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, and Abdullah bin Zubair were asked about performing Umrah before Hajj, so all of them said: Yes, this is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When you reach Makkah Mukarramah, perform the Tawaf of the House of Allah and the Sa’i between Safa and Marwah, and then come out of Ihram (thus this will be your Umrah), even if this act is done one day before Arafah. After that, you should enter into Ihram for Hajj. In this way, Allah Almighty will grant you the opportunity to perform both Hajj and Umrah.
Hadith 4213
Lady Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) says: We set out on a journey after donning the Ihram. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Those who have a sacrificial animal with them will remain in the state of Ihram, and those who do not have this animal should perform Umrah and become halal (come out of Ihram). Now, I did not have a sacrificial animal with me, so I became halal, that is, I came out of Ihram. But my husband, Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), had a sacrificial animal with him, so he did not become halal. I took off the Ihram and wore ordinary clothes and went near my husband, Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), but he said: Stay away from me. I said: Are you afraid that I will jump upon you?
Hadith 4214
Narrated by Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed the people at the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage, saying: Whoever among you wishes to perform Umrah before Hajj, may do so. However, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed Hajj Ifrad and did not perform Umrah.
Hadith 4215
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: In the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage, we set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). We proclaimed the Talbiyah for Umrah, then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Those who have a sacrificial animal with them should proclaim the Talbiyah for both Hajj and Umrah together; they will become lawful from both together. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: When I reached Mecca, I began menstruating, so I could not perform the Tawaf of the House and the Sa’i between Safa and Marwah. I complained about this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said: Untie your hair, comb it, and enter into Ihram for Hajj, and leave the Umrah. So I did as he instructed. When we had completed Hajj, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me with my brother Abdur Rahman to Tan’eem so that I could perform Umrah, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is in place of your Umrah. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: Those who had entered into Ihram for Umrah became lawful after performing the Tawaf of the House and the Sa’i between Safa and Marwah, then after coming from Mina, they performed the Tawaf for Hajj. And those who had combined Hajj and Umrah, that is, performed Qiran Hajj, performed only one Tawaf.
