Section: What a Menstruating or Postpartum Woman Should Do Before and After Entering Ihram
Hadith 4164
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا رَفَعَهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّ النُّفَسَاءَ وَالْحَائِضَ تَغْتَسِلُ، وَتُحْرِمُ، وَتَقْضِي الْمَنَاسِكَ كُلَّهَا، غَيْرَ أَنَّهَا لَا تَطُوفُ بِالْبَيْتِ حَتَّى تَطْهُرَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: "A woman in the state of nifas (postnatal bleeding) or menstruation will perform ghusl (ritual bath) and then enter into ihram. She will perform all the rites except for the tawaf of the House of Allah. When she becomes pure, she will then perform the tawaf of the House of Allah."
Hadith 4165
عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ عُمَيْسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّهَا وَلَدَتْ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ بِالْبَيْدَاءِ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((مُرْهَا فَلْتَغْتَسِلْ ثُمَّ لِتُهِلَّ))
Lady Asma bint Umais (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that she gave birth to Muhammad bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) at the place of Bida’ during the Farewell Pilgrimage. When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Instruct her to perform ghusl (ritual bath) and then enter into ihram.
Hadith 4166
عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: كَانَتْ عَائِشَةُ تَقُولُ: خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَا نَذْكُرُ إِلَّا الْحَجَّ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا سَرِفَ، طَمِثْتُ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَا أَبْكِي، فَقَالَ: ((مَا يُبْكِيكِ؟)) قُلْتُ: وَدِدْتُ أَنِّي لَمْ أَخْرُجِ الْعَامَ، قَالَ: ((لَعَلَّكِ نَفِسْتِ، يَعْنِي حِضْتِ؟)) قَالَتْ: قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: ((إِنَّ هَذَا شَيْءٌ كَتَبَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَى بَنَاتِ آدَمَ، فَافْعَلِي مَا يَفْعَلُ الْحَاجُّ غَيْرَ أَنْ لَا تَطُوفِي بِالْبَيْتِ حَتَّى تَطْهُرِي … )) الْحَدِيثَ
Qasim narrates that Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) used to say that we set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and our intention was only for Hajj. When we reached the place of Sarif, I began to menstruate. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me, I was crying. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Why are you crying? I said: I wish I had not come for Hajj this year. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Perhaps you have started menstruating? I said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty has ordained this for the daughters of Adam. Now you should perform all the acts that other pilgrims do, except do not perform the Tawaf of the House (Ka'bah) until you become pure... . Al-Hadith
Hadith 4167
(وَمِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) عَنْ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ بِنَحْوِهِ وَفِيهِ: فَحِضْتُ قَبْلَ أَنْ أَدْخُلَ مَكَّةَ فَأَدْرَكَنِي يَوْمُ عَرَفَةَ وَأَنَا حَائِضٌ فَشَكَوْتُ ذَلِكَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: ((دَعِي عُمْرَتَكِ، وَانْقُضِي رَأْسَكِ وَامْتَشِطِي وَاغْتَسِلِي وَأَهِلِّي بِالْحَجِّ))، فَفَعَلْتُ الْحَدِيثَ
(Second chain) A similar hadith is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), except that it states: I began menstruating upon entering Makkah, and it continued until the day of Arafah was about to come. I complained about this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said: Leave the ‘Umrah, untie your hair and comb it, and after performing ghusl, enter into the state of ihram for Hajj. So I did accordingly... . Al-Hadith.
Hadith 4168
عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: دَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ وَهِيَ تَبْكِي، فَقَالَ لَهَا: ((مَا لَكِ تَبْكِينَ؟)) قَالَتْ: أَبْكِي أَنَّ النَّاسَ أَحَلُّوا وَلَمْ أَحْلِلْ، وَطَافُوا بِالْبَيْتِ وَلَمْ أَطُفْ، وَهَذَا الْحَجُّ قَدْ حَضَرَ، قَالَ: ((إِنَّ هَذَا أَمْرٌ قَدْ كَتَبَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَى بَنَاتِ آدَمَ فَاغْتَسِلِي، وَأَهِلِّي بِالْحَجِّ وَحُجِّي))، قَالَتْ: فَفَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ، فَلَمَّا طَهُرَتْ قَالَ: ((طُوفِي بِالْبَيْتِ وَبَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ ثُمَّ قَدْ أَحْلَلْتِ مِنْ حَجِّكِ وَمِنْ عُمْرَتِكِ))، قَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنِّي أَجِدُ فِي نَفْسِي مِنْ عُمْرَتِي أَنِّي لَمْ أَكُنْ طُفْتُ حَتَّى حَجَجْتُ، قَالَ: ((فَاذْهَبْ يَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ! فَأَعْمِرْ أُخْتَكَ مِنَ التَّنْعِيمِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) while she was crying. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked her: "What is the matter, are you crying?" She said: "The people have become lawful (i.e., completed their rituals), but I have not become lawful, and they have performed the Tawaf of the House of Allah, but I have not been able to perform the Tawaf, and now the days of Hajj have come." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah the Exalted has ordained this matter upon the daughters of Adam. Now you should perform Ghusl, put on the Ihram for Hajj, and perform Hajj." Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: "I did as I was told. Then, when I became pure from menstruation, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Now perform the Tawaf of the House of Allah and the Sa'i between Safa and Marwah; thus you will become lawful from both Hajj and Umrah.'" Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have a concern in my heart that although I had put on the Ihram for Umrah, I was not able to perform the Tawaf of the House of Allah until I completed Hajj." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Abdur Rahman! Go and take your sister to Tan'eem so she may perform Umrah."
